This has increased the amount of foreign labours in Malaysian construction industry and also has affected the social problems in the country. In February 2016, the government has come to an agreement to restrict the employment of the foreign labours in order to lessen the reliant of the foreign labours. Therefore, this research was conducted to study the impacts of restricting the employment of foreign labours in Malaysian construction industry and also to propose the strategies for contractors to overcome the restriction of the foreign labours. A quantitative method was employed in this research by obtaining the data from questionnaire survey to 44 numbers of G7 contractors in Selangor. The data were analysed using statistic method and mean index analysis. The results indicate numerous impacts due to the restriction of foreign labours. Amongst the impacts are the increase of labour cost such as raising the wages, bonus and incentives to attract the local labours to work in the construction industry and increase the employment of illegal and local labours at construction site. However, there are strategies to overcome the restriction of foreign labours which are fully optimize the used of available labour, provide training to the unskilled labours and apply technologies, plant and machineries to substitute the labours. This study will be beneficial to contractors in order to manage the human resources in the construction industry.","PeriodicalId":304648,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BIMP-EAGA Regional Development","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122454203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study employs several econometric tests such as unit root test for stationarity test, cointegration test and Granger causality test to determine the long- and short-run relationships between stock prices and macroeconomic variables. The result of the Johansen cointegration test shows that all the macroeconomic variables are cointegrated with stock prices in the long-run. Moreover, the Granger causality tests show that only exchange and inflation rates significantly Granger cause stock prices in the short-run. Fifteen white maize populations available at the Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) were grown and evaluated at the Central Mindanao University (CMU) and UPLB on July and December 2011 respectively, to assess the genetic repeatability and the estimates of genetic coefficient. Different maize characters such as yield, days to anthesis , days to silking, plant and ear height, stand count, number of ears, ear length, ear diameter and shelling percentage were studied. The results revealed that in terms of repeatability, yield (31%), plant height (34.88), ear height (41.84%), and shelling percentage (35.54%) obtained moderate values while the rest of the traits indicated low values. Estimates of phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) exhibited moderate values for yield, stand count and number of ears while low values were indicated by all of the traits for genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV). Low magnitude of GCV as well as moderate genetic repeatability for the traits being investigated suggests that these parameters were under the control of environmental effects. ","PeriodicalId":304648,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BIMP-EAGA Regional Development","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127757905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were gathered using transect walk, quadrat sampling and observation method. It also verified the results of an earlier study that compared the perceived ecological condition of the adjoining communities before and after the establishment of the Project in terms of instances of soil erosion, frequency of slash-and-burn farming (swidden agriculture), cases of illegal logging, and diversity. Respondents believed that these four areas have improved with the establishment of the plantation. Study results revealed that species richness and plant diversity in the areas along the FMR were highest, followed by those in the buffer zones. The rubber plantation was understandably lowest in species richness and plant diversity. But as perceived by the indigenous people respondents, the plantation had attracted more animal that prefer trees as habitats.","PeriodicalId":304648,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BIMP-EAGA Regional Development","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132713407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We conducted a survey to quantify the impact of the barter trade suspension in major barter trade locations which included Tawau, Sandakan, and Lahad Datu, major cities in Sabah that are considered the hubs of barter trading in the state. Our survey findings show that the losses of direct income to traders due to the suspension range between RM1,680,000 - RM3,750,000 for eight traders in the survey sample conducted in May 2016. Other effects include the laying-off of barter-trade workers, and unemployment of employers, losses in the benefit of import-export activities through anticipated rising prices, losses in the diversity of consumption of imported products, and displacement of workers through relocation to other industry sectors or geographical regions to pursue new employment opportunities.","PeriodicalId":304648,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BIMP-EAGA Regional Development","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128483443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The distributions of total organic C (TOC), total Kjeldahl N (TKN), microbial biomass C (MBC), readily mineralizable C and N, and five enzyme activities (β-glucosidase, β-glucosaminidase, acid phosphatase, arylamidase, and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis) involved in the cycling of C, N, P and S were studied in three soil depths (0-5. 5-10, 10-20 cm) while soil surface fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) were estimated. Ryegrass showed higher activity in acid phosphatase, β-glucosidase and β-glucosaminidase. Ryegrass and hairy vetch significantly increased organic C and N, and MBC. Level of mineralized C and N were the same in ryegrass and hairy vetch. There was no clear variation in CO2, N2O and CH4 fluxes from the cover crop treatments. N2O fluxes increased with an increase in soil moisture. The negative CH4 fluxes manifest the soil as CH4 sink. No significant differences among cover crop treatments in terms of CO2-C, N2O-N and CH4-C emissions, a reflection that their emissions are highly variable. Empirical data on carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes are important in management systems to evaluate mitigation strategies, while microbial biomass and enzyme activities can be used as sensitive indicators of ecological stability.","PeriodicalId":304648,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BIMP-EAGA Regional Development","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127159261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Arayat, Magalang, Pampanga. Four different concentrations (T1-10000 ppm, T2-1000 ppm, T3-100 ppm and T4-10 ppm), including T+ (ethanol) and T0 (saline solution) were prepared for cytotoxicity screening. Undiluted and diluted forms of the ethanol leaf extract, including T+ (chloramphenicol) and T- (distilled water) were utilized for antibacterial assay. Brine shrimps (Artemia naupllii) were used to determine the cytotoxic activity. The following percentages of deaths after nine hours of observation were recorded: T+ and T1 with 100%, T2 with 93.33%, and T3 with 3.33%. For T4 and T0, they had 0% deaths even after nine hours. The data also revealed that based on the Probit Method, the LC50, LC70 and LC95 of Bakali leaf extract to the brine shrimps after nine hours are expected to be at 363.35 ppm, 520.66 ppm, and 1122.95 ppm, respectively. On the other hand, Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli were used as test organisms for antibacterial assay using paper disc diffusion method. The results revealed that the ethanol leaf extract of Bakali had the potential to inhibit the growth of S. aureus and E. coli. Based on a 6-mm diameter paper disc, the extract is considered as “active” against S. aureus and “partially active” against E. coli when in the diluted form of aqueous solution.","PeriodicalId":304648,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BIMP-EAGA Regional Development","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127030852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
