Just as building such a system requires novel approaches; its management also requires innovation. From an operational point of view, the first challenge we face is to provide scalable procedures and tools able to monitor the ever expanding infrastructure and the constant evolution of the needs. The second is to ensure that all these tools strongly interact with one another, even though their development is spread out worldwide. Consequently, our goal is to provide a homogeneous way to access tools and analyze data for daily operational needs. To implement this concept into LCG/EGEE infrastructure management tools, 1N2P3 Computing Centre proposed a web portal, named \"CIC operations portal\", conceived and built as an integration platform for existing features and new requirements. Firstly, we describe the initial needs that led us to the present architecture of this portal. We then emphasize a specific feature for the operations efficiency which is the web interface dedicated to EGEE overall daily monitoring. We also deal with the high availability mechanism put in place by INFN-CNAF to address failover and replication issues. We finally present how the CIC portal has become one of the essential EGEE and LCG core services.","PeriodicalId":304508,"journal":{"name":"2007 8th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Grid Computing","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121082635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When relying on classic list-scheduling algorithms, the issue of independent and selfish task allocation determination may arise. Indeed the allocation of the most critical task may lead to poor allocations for subsequent tasks. In this paper we propose a new mixed-parallel scheduling heuristic that takes into account that several tasks may have almost the same level of criticality during the allocation process. We then perform a comparison of this heuristic with other algorithms in simulation over a wide range of application and on platform conditions. We find that our heuristic achieves better performance in terms of schedule length, speedup and degradation from best.","PeriodicalId":304508,"journal":{"name":"2007 8th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Grid Computing","volume":"290 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134467965","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For instance, large scale problems in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can be efficiently simulated under this environment. However, unfortunately, most of the currently developed PDF. solvers using the finite element method (FEM), usually tight combinations of a mesh generator and a linear system solver, are not qualified for the grid computing environment. In this paper, based on principles of grid computing, we present a grid-enabled Client/Server model for solving the Stokes/(incompressible) Navier-Stokes system in 3D.","PeriodicalId":304508,"journal":{"name":"2007 8th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Grid Computing","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124949880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the GridFMO, quantum calculations of macro molecules become possible by using large amount of computational resources collected from many moderate-sized cluster computers. A new middleware suite was developed based on Ninf-G, whose fault tolerance and flexible resource management were found to be indispensable for long-term calculations. The GridFMO was used to draw ab initio potential energy curves of a protein motor system with 16,664 atoms. For the calculations, 10 cluster computers over the pacific rim were used, sharing the resources with other users via butch queue systems on each machine. A series of 14 GridFMO calculations were conducted for 70 days, coping with more than 100 problems cropping up. The FMO curves were compared against the molecular mechanics (MM), and it was confirmed that (1) the FMO method is capable of drawing smooth curves despite several cut-off approximations, and that (2) the MM method is reliable enough for molecular modeling.","PeriodicalId":304508,"journal":{"name":"2007 8th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Grid Computing","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122031862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a CSBIR (Content and Semantic Context based Image Retrieval) scheme for MedlmGrid (Medical Image Grid) to tackle the sharing difficulties of special and heterogeneous MILs within wide areas. The scheme encapsulates distributed CBIR engines, MILs and their metadata as WS (Web Services), and links them in the grid environment. It combines CBIR and semantic context of images to automatically choose the optimal WS set to serve users. Our integrated-features based CSBIR engine for thorax CR (Computer Radiology Image) is related as one instance, which can merge the superiorities of randomly selected CBIR services. MedlmGrid CSBIR prototype is based on CGSP (ChinaGrid Supporting Platform) and its loosely coupled structure makes the integration of decentralized CBIR systems within or across hospitals more efficiently.","PeriodicalId":304508,"journal":{"name":"2007 8th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Grid Computing","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129363617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This type of failures often incur in undesired performance levels and unexpected partial crashes. In this paper we present a technique that offers high-availability for Grid services based on concepts like virtualization, clustering and software rejuvenation. To show the effectiveness of our approach, we have conducted some experiments with OGSA-DAI middleware. One of the implementations of OGSA-DAI makes use of use of Apache Axis V1.2.1, a SOAP implementation that suffers from severe memory leaks. Without changing any bit of the middleware layer we have been able to anticipate most of the problems caused by those leaks and to increase the overall availability of the OGSA-DAI Application Server. Although these results are tightly related with this middleware it should be noted that our technique is neutral and can be applied to any other Grid service that is supposed to be high-available.","PeriodicalId":304508,"journal":{"name":"2007 8th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Grid Computing","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124473960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to realize this potential on a large scale, various aspects of metadata must be managed. These include uniform and secure access to distributed and independently maintained metadata repositories, as well as management of metadata lifecycle. In this paper we analyze these issues and present a service-oriented architecture for metadata management, called S-OGSA, that addresses them in a systematic way.","PeriodicalId":304508,"journal":{"name":"2007 8th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Grid Computing","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117054474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, the same cannot yet be said of the end-to-end distributed software stack. Any given action, for example, reliably transferring a directory of files, can involve a wide range of complex and interrelated actions across multiple pieces of software: checking user certificates and permissions, getting details for all files, performing third-party transfers, understanding re-try policy decisions, etc. We present an infrastructure for troubleshooting complex middleware, a general purpose technique for configurable log summarization, and an anomaly detection technique that works in near-real time on running Grid middleware. We present results gathered using this infrastructure from instrumented Grid middleware and applications running on the Emulab testbed. From these results, we analyze the effectiveness of several algorithms at accurately detecting a variety of performance anomalies.","PeriodicalId":304508,"journal":{"name":"2007 8th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Grid Computing","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123869692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
