This interest is fueled by the integration of a high amount of intermittent renewable energy resources (RES) in the networks. This study has been performed to analyze and identify the potential of DSM in providing the operational flexibility of power networks in 8 South-East European countries. For that purpose, a survey questionnaire was developed on DSM, which was distributed in late 2017 and responses were collected in January 2018. The questionnaire collected information on existing DSM capacities, the required DSM amount for flexible operation and the future DSM potential in the region. Additional key information was collected about the DSM provision, such as the characteristics, location and network services obtained from these resources, as well as the influential market participants to provide these DSM services in the network. This study will facilitate the cross-border management of RES by increasing the operational flexibility of the transmission network in South-East Europe.","PeriodicalId":302863,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131697315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, theoretical background was developed on the kind of damped modes that can be analyzed through HHT. HHT was then applied on signals from a nonlinear model of AC grid containing two close HVDC lines and power electronic devices. Two cases were studied: identification of coupling mode and temporal tracking of coupling mode during switching events. Results were compared with those obtained in modal analysis. In both cases it was found that HHT was able to provide better depth and clarity in off-line stability analysis.","PeriodicalId":302863,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129246040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To ensure the autonomous power supply when disconnected from the bulk power system, energy storage system (ESS) options as well as demand side flexibility can be used to provide the local balance between time-varying production and consumption in a micro-grid structure. In this study, the demand side flexibility via thermostatically controllable appliances (TCAs)-based direct load control (DLC) strategies and common ESSs-based bi-directional energy flow possibility is considered for the economic operation of a micro-grid. Different case studies are conducted for validating the effectiveness of the proposed structure.","PeriodicalId":302863,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121298480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A nationwide virtual PV (photovoltaic) system of 14 locations in Finland with interplant distances between 10 km to 1065 km has been analyzed at 1 Hz resolution by introducing stochastic variables i.e. power fluctuation, maximum power fluctuation and smoothing potential factor. The paper presents a multifold smoothing analysis based on geographical dispersion, ensemble size, temporal resolutions and interplant distances of PV plants. Empirical expressions are proposed using regression analysis, which represents a decay of smoothing potential factor for a decreasing time resolution. Aggregated strength of maximum power fluctuation of $N$ number of PV plants decreases by a converging factor 1/-N and an ensemble of 14 PV plants follows the strict ramp rate limits for 97.5% of the total production time. Spatial correlation w.r.t interplant distances is also focused.","PeriodicalId":302863,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116259594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The transient-based pilot directional protection techniques are widely used in high voltage and ultra-high voltage transmission networks because they offer reliable and fast operation with reasonable communication demands. However, their application in modern distribution network has not been explored so far. Ever since the advent of RALDA relay in 1978 by ASEA, relay manufacturers have investigated and developed different methods to determine fault direction based on delta quantities. These algorithms are fundamentally different in terms of their operating principle. This paper introduces the development and design principles of some of the existing methods along with some alternate pilot directional protection schemes including current-only solutions. Moreover, the performance evaluation for a 22kV modern distribution system has also been conducted. Finally, the performance of all the tested algorithms are compared and the limitations of each of the techniques are summarized.","PeriodicalId":302863,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115274570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been noted that most of the observed oscillation incidents have been caused by forced oscillations. These incidents have not been critical to the power system operation so far but in the worst case they could risk the system security. Therefore, in this paper, the most significant forced oscillation events in the Finnish power system have been studied from the recent years. The results show how the observed forced oscillations are dependent on many factors but the most important are location of the forced oscillation source, damping of the inter-area oscillation mode, and frequencies of the forced oscillation source and the interarea oscillation mode in the system. It is concluded that the observations follow relatively well the general theory of resonance summarized in the paper.","PeriodicalId":302863,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121025110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Combined with power quality issues, the distribution system operator (DSO) must go through strenuous impact studies before proceeding to the installation of PV systems. To address this issue, this work proposes a tool to rapidly and accurately compute the total PV hosting capacity (PVHC) of their network. Moreover, the proposed tool allows the implementation of user-defined control strategies in order to assess their beneficial effects with respect to the PVHC. In this prospect, we investigated the impact of smart PV inverters. We implemented this tool as a plugin for PowerFactory and tested it on the CIGRE benchmark distribution grid. First, we determined the PVHC with inverters injecting at unity power factor, then we estimated the gains brought by smart inverter control (SIC). The latter increased the hosting capacity by up to 19.7 %.","PeriodicalId":302863,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"479 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127562972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of this paper is to study the interaction of traditional static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) with the reactive power capable PV inverter in order to provide voltage support to the low voltage (LV) distribution network. In this paper, we propose an effective coordinated voltage control structure. The control structure has a hierarchical approach where reactive power compensation by PV inverters is prioritized. The STATCOMs are only used when the PV inverters are not capable enough to provide or consume enough reactive power to provide the voltage support. Also, we show that the reactive power supply at night by the PV inverters can be an important resource for effective voltage regulation by using this technique. Data from the existing LV distribution network are used for a case study. The simulation results indicate that the proposed voltage control method is able to control both the over and under voltage situations for the test distribution network without curtailing any active power from PV.","PeriodicalId":302863,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134121034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the coordination and control of independently operated flexible resources (e.g. storage, demand response) imposes critical challenges arising from the heterogeneity of the flexible resources, conflict of interests, and impact on the grid. Therefore, designing a simple yet efficient coordination mechanism that works on these distributed resources is of the utmost importance. We introduce a simulation model to study energy exchange with flexibility coordination while working towards an efficient allocation mechanism. A case study analysing different allocation mechanisms and consequent losses (compared to a base-case of No flexibility) in numerical experiments over real demand/generation profiles of the Pecan Street dataset elucidates the efficacy in energy and flexibility allocation while promoting cooperation between co-located flexibilities in residential cooperatives through local exchange.","PeriodicalId":302863,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"123 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134322690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we compare two optimization models for planning generators and storage units in an islanded microgrid, while dealing with uncertainty in load- and PV-forecasts. These models are combined with a number of re-planning strategies, and evaluated through a case study of an islanded microgrid in the Netherlands. As a result, one of our algorithms is currently implemented in this microgrid. In our analysis of the case study, we identify features of the microgrid that play an important role in determining whether these approaches are useful and we show the effectiveness of using re- planning strategies.","PeriodicalId":302863,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133115412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
