These processes are based on vapor–liquid–solid (VLS)-type growth as shown in the figures below. The nanowire is built from a pattern of metallic pads (usually gold). This metal is used as a precursor that chemically reacts with a gas. In the case of silicon nanowires, this gas is often silane.
