While promoting the use of agents as the silver bullet for various software engineering problems, it faces difficulties in presenting successful deployments. Despite the countless multi-agent prototypes that have been developed, the number of actually deployed and in use MAS is at best very small [1]. One reason for the noticeable absence of deployed multi-agent systems is their inability to scale. This paper reports about the use of a CORBA/Java middle-ware layer called DICE, which enables transparent access to the resources of different physical machines. Using this layer it becomes possible to build large multi-agent systems that require large numbers of concurrent threads and significant memory resources. Using DICE it becomes possible to build large agent societies consisting of complex agents defined in JESS.","PeriodicalId":300882,"journal":{"name":"JGI '01","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127292778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Parallel implementation of SAMR algorithms is difficult because of the complex dynamic communication dependencies that arise from adaptive gridding. This complex, ity is exacerbated by use of different data structures represented in different physics models. The Structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement Applications Infrastructure (SAMRAI) C++ framework implements object-oriented techniques to manage the complex communication patterns, load balance, and model interaction that occur in a SAMR algorithm. We present an overview of these utilities, demonstrating their application for a continuum-particle model to study Richtmeyer-Meshkov instabilities. Performance results are reported from the IBM ASCI Blue Pacific parallel platform.","PeriodicalId":300882,"journal":{"name":"JGI '01","volume":"216 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125183678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The typical approach to adding multidimensional arrays to Java has been through class libraries that implement these structures. It has been shown that the class library approach can achieve very high-performance for numerical computing, through the use of compiler techniques and efficient implementations of aggregate array operations. Because of the inconvenience of accessing array elements through method invocations, it is advocated by many that class libraries for multidimensional arrays should be combined with new language syntax to facilitate manipulation of those multidimensional arrays. Another approach that has been discussed in the literature is that of relying exclusively on the JVM to recognize those arrays of arrays that are being used to stimulate multidimensional arrays. This approach can also deliver good performance, but it does not improve the existing interfaces for numerical computing. There is yet a third approach: extending the Java language with new syntactic constructs for multidimensional arrays and directly compiling those constructs to bytecode. The new constructs provide a more convenient interface for numerical computing, without requiring a matching class library. This paper is a comparative discussion or the three approaches to adding multidimensional arrays to Java mentioned above. We present a description of the three approaches, listing the pros and cons of each. We give a more detailed description of the third approach — language constructs translated to bytecode — as it is a new contribution. We compare each of the approaches with regards to functionality, impact on the language and virtual machine specification, implementation efforts, and typical achievable performance. We show that the best choice depends on the relative importance attached to the above metrics.","PeriodicalId":300882,"journal":{"name":"JGI '01","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114563390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
