Institutional delivery service utilization is indispensable to improve maternal and child health.However, the proportion of women utilizing institutional delivery service in Ethiopia is very low. In addition, little is known about factors contributing to home delivery. Objectives: To assess the prevalence of home delivery and associated risk factors at Jimma Town, Southwest Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was employed on 423 study participants. Data were collected by semi-structured questionnaire through face to face interview. A systematic sampling technique was used to select study participants. After cleaning and checking completeness of collected data, data was entered into Epi data version 3.3.1 software and exported to Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 21.0 for analysis. Logistic regression was used to find out the association between explanatory and response variables. Explanatory variables which fulfill the assumption of logistic regression and had a P-value less than 0.25 from bi-variable logistic regression were considered for the multivariable logistic regression model. The strength of association was evaluated using odds ratio at 95% confidence interval (CI) and P-value < 0.05 was considered to declare significant associations. Results: The prevalence of home delivery in this study was 36.64% (n=155/423 and it had significant association with illiteracy AOR=2.7 [(95%CI); (1.37-5.43)], multi-gravida AOR=2.12 [(95%CI); (1.09-4.10)], history of antenatal care (ANC) follow up AOR=4.15 [(95%CI); (2.57-6.70)] and husband educational status AOR=13.5 [(95%CI); (2.86-63.62)]. Conclusion: The prevalence of home delivery in this study was high compared to world health organizational recommendation. Educational status of the mother, gravida, antenatal care follow up and husband educational status were factors that had a significant association. Women empowerment through educational opportunities, increase antenatal care follow up and male involvement in maternal health service are recommended","PeriodicalId":300833,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Pregnancy & Child Birth","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125654098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though, some pregnant women clearly know the benefits /advantages of PMTCT services, they are not willing to test and access the services. Hence, this study was aimed to assess the willingness of pregnant women attending antenatal care towards VCT/PMTCT at Adare general hospital in southern Ethiopia. Method: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted at Hawassa Adare hospital, southern Ethiopia from February to April/2018. A total of 338 randomly selected pregnant women who were attending antenatal care clinic were included. Data was collected using structured and pretested questionnaire; entered and analyzed using SPSS version 20 computer software. Important descriptive and logistic models were used for data analysis assuming statistical significance at p < 0.05. Result: A total of 338 mothers were interviewed with a response rate of 100%. The willingness towards voluntary HIV counseling and testing among study participants was 82.2%. Participants who attended primary and High school and above were 3.9 (AOR= 3.87, 95% CI- 1.705, 8.782) and 9.5 times (AOR 9.53 at 95% CI- 3.155, 28.76); those who had good knowledge about VCT/PMTCT were 3.47 times (AOR=3.47, 95% CI-1.721, 7.003); women who followed two to three ANC visit, were 5.1 times more likely have willingness towards VCT/PMTCT (AOR 5.11 at 95% CI -1.095, 23.81) more likely willing to be tested than their counterparts respectively. Conclusion: Willingness towards voluntary HIV counseling was encouraging however it needs advancement. Since boosted knowledge and awareness promote willingness to VCT/PMTCT uptakes, initiation of community-based information dissemination, increased quality of ANC service, and empowering women to be educated could be effective in order to promote high VCT and PMTCT program uptakes","PeriodicalId":300833,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Pregnancy & Child Birth","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124585504","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This “space” provides her an opportunity to be cared for, to be replenished, to rest and to reflect on herself being a new mother before returning home. We explored a volunteer community residential service set up to help new mothers to document their experiences and determine if the outcomes matched their expectations. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were offered to all women who had utilised this service since its inception. The questionnaire explored their motivations to seek such as service and to learn of their experiences. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and a thematic analysis employed. Results: Over the last 8 years, 12 women, 4 twice, availed themselves of this service, two being first-time mothers. Reasons given by mothers for utilising this service included recovery from the trauma of childbirth both past and present, physical and emotional, and delaying assuming responsibilities at home. One, though hopefully not common, is newborns being born and even dying. This piece highlights ethical dilemmas and clinical practices that may be optimal for these mothers and these infants before and after mothers deliver. The interventions discussed include reducing fetuses’ risks during birth, bonding, and mothers and parents maximizing the meaning they derive from whatever happens, even when their child dies. Finally, when and whether these mothers should participate in research is discussed. The goal throughout is to identify ways in which the tragic outcomes to which these fetuses, mothers, and parents can be reduced, to the degree that this is possible.","PeriodicalId":300833,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Pregnancy & Child Birth","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129340189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Medical treatment is a commonly prescribed management under certain circumstances. It is associated with a high success rate, but tubal affection is a result. This study evaluated the effect of medical treatment on patients with unruptured tubal pregnancy. Materials and methods: This was a prospective cohort study conducted at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Suez Canal University Hospitals, from January 2016 to June 2019. We recruited Fifty- six patients with unruptured tubal pregnancy.All patients were managed with medical treatment, methotrexate therapy. After confirmation of successful medical treatment, hysterosalpingography was done three months after treatment for the evaluation of tubal patency.The outcome measure was the rate of tubal patency after medical treatment for unruptured tubal ectopic pregnancy. Results: The present study revealed that 71.4% of patients (40 cases) had patent tubes, and 28.6% had blocked tubes. Moreover, 21.4% of patients have ipsilateral tubal block only, 3.6% have a contralateral tubal block, and 3.6% have a bilateral tubal block. Significant risk factors for tubal block were history suggestive of PID, acute PID hospitalization, and history of septic miscarriage (p value < 0.05). Objective: The objective of this study was to describe oral problems and oral health habits involving children in early childhood with microcephaly associated with fetal exposure to ZIKV. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out on a sample of children with microcephaly, exposed to ZIKV during the pregnancy, attended at the Neuropediatrics outpatient clinic of a reference center in Salvador-BA. Clinical examination of oral conditions and interviews with mothers/ guardians were performed to obtain sociodemographic data and lifestyle habits. A descriptive analysis of the variables and exploratory analysis of factors associated with defects in enamel development (DDE) were done using Pearson's chi square and a significance level of 5%. Results: 74 children participated in the study and a higher frequency of the following oral conditions was observed: delayed eruption chronology (100%), dental biofilm (55.88%) and enamel defects (DDE) (22.06%). Bohn nodules (6.85%), micro dents (2.70%) and ectopically positioned dental elements (1.35%) were less frequent. Only one of them showed incipient caries lesion (1.47%). The occurrence of DDE was more frequent among those with ogival palate, normal weight at birth and who did not have an eruptive delay (p <0.05). In oral habits, 52.70% used a pacifier, 50% feeding at night, 66.22% used sugar and 52.24% brushed teeth before bed. Conclusion: Monitoring oral health conditions is necessary to minimize oral health problems in these children.","PeriodicalId":300833,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Pregnancy & Child Birth","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116312003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The knowledge of the fetus’s sex at an earlier stage allows parents to prepare for their newborn’s arrival, strengthens the mother’s bond with her child, and offers time for parents to mentally absorb the growth of their family. Furthermore, a study reported there were several psychological advantages of early prenatal testing, such as “perceived control, normalization of pregnancy, peace of mind, and facilitating decision-making”.1 The discovery of the fetus’s sex allows the restless journey of becoming parents to be more manageable.","PeriodicalId":300833,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Pregnancy & Child Birth","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126250649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
