Its de novo occurrence in pregnancy is extremely rare with only few cases reported. High risk of mortality and lack of consensus in treatment warrants its reporting. Case report: A 24 year old primigravida, with no history suggestive of renal disease, presented to us in her third trimester with anuria. She was initially managed as sepsis or preeclampsia related AKI. However, even after delivery there was no improvement in kidney function with hemodialysis and she developed hemoptysis. Renal biopsy made a diagnosis of Anti-Glomerular Basement Membrane disease. With careful multi-disciplinary treatment, she delivered a live born baby and was discharged under stable condition on hemodialysis, currently awaiting a kidney transplant. Conclusion: This case highlights that the current management for GPS should be revised to improve the outcome of AKI. Also, it determines how important it is for obstetricians to consider whether a pregnancy should be terminated to improve the outcome of AKI in pregnant patients with GPS","PeriodicalId":300833,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Pregnancy & Child Birth","volume":"339 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134049259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Certain medications may cause harm to the foetus due to their potential teratogenic effects and the physiological adjustments occurring in the mother during pregnancy. Prescription of drug used by pregnant women should be viewed as one of a public health issue. This study aware health care workers on harmful drugs prescription to pregnant women and helps in understanding the type of medication used during pregnancy and safety of drugs used during pregnancy, thereupon this study was ascertain drug usage pattern and potential teratogenicity risk among pregnant women attending maternal and child health clinic of Mettu Karl Referral Hospital. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study design was carried out from April 13/2021 to June 15/2021. Data was collected through employing semi-structured questioner, and then the collected data was cleared, coded and analyzed by statistical packages for social sciences 25.0 version statistical software. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the data. P value <0.05 was considered as a cut point for statistical significance in the final model. Results: A total of 156 participants were interviewed of whom, 81(51.9%) pregnant women were age between 20-35 years old and a majority 113(72.4%) of them were married. Among medical condition majority 40(25.6%) of the participants had peptic ulcer disease and 26(16.7%) urinary tract infections followed by 20(12.8%) acute illness and 12(7.7%) hyperemesis. Among the total drug prescribed for pregnant women 30(19.2%) FDA category C was the common followed by 29 (186%) FDA category B and 26(16.7%) FDA category D. Only 10(6.4%) of prescribed drug were FDA category X. Pregnant women whose age >35 years (AOR=4.05, 95%CI:1.274-1.903; p=0.001), urban residents (AOR=2.72, 95%CI:2.524-3.927; p=0.035), and pregnant women during second trimester (AOR=1.79, 95%CI:3.926-9.406; p=0.013) were significantly associated with MCH follow up. Conclusion and recommendation: From the drug prescribed, majority of pregnant women were taken antibiotics followed by 18(11.5%) NSAID, iron sulfate, and proton pump inhibitors. She delivered a single viable male child at 33 weeks of gestation due to pregnancy induced hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus with no abnormalities. The newborn was healthy without any congenital and other abnormalities. To our belief, this is the first case reporting the use of pioglitazone as well as glimepiride in early pregnancy. In this study, Gateway Genomics, the leading provider of fetal sex testing, introduces “SneakPeek Snap”, a novel microneedle-based, self-administered blood collection device that simplifies at-home blood collection for fetal sex testing. Our data confirms that, compared to lancet finger sticks, the SneakPeek Snap device provides users several advantages including significant reduction in perceived pain, greater ease of use, a shorter sample collection time, and a dramatic reduction in risk of sample contamination. Notably, blood samples collected using the Snap device were shown to be highly accurate for fetal sex determination — with an accuracy greater than 99%","PeriodicalId":300833,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Pregnancy & Child Birth","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116816953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Communications in this article are derived from preliminary findings of an ongoing preconception baseline pilot in Luuka-a rural eastern district of Uganda. This is a phased study, including a desk review of literature and a short baseline pilot. Methods: The review followed the methodology of systematic reviews. Key electronic databases were searched including PUBMED/MEDLINE and google scholar. Also, reports from ministries/academic institution libraries and views from experts were done. English articles published post 2000, covering preconception care, barriers, facilitators and policies were included in the review. Out of 110 shortlisted abstracts, 28 were included. Studies were extracted onto structured formats and analysed using the narrative synthesis approach. Results: There exist unstructured preconception health and service guidelines in Uganda. Barriers to preconception service integration into the district’s health system include; lack of a clear policy, careworn health system and care seeker related factors. Opportunities for preconception service integration include; poor maternal and neonatal health indicators, positive change in health seeking behaviour, existence of a gap in the care continuum, functional VHT system to link the community to services, anticipated roll out of key family care practises by Ministry of Health Uganda, and improved access to radio & mobile phones. Conclusion: Formulation of clear preconception guidelines, testing health system integration approaches, stakeholders’ engagement, awareness creation and strengthening the supply side is recommended as a way forward","PeriodicalId":300833,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Pregnancy & Child Birth","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116481934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in low resource settings, rural and refugee camps, professionally trained staff are often in short supply hence women tend to rely on traditional birth attendants (TBAs) for delivery. Despite knowledge that a health care facility delivery is safer, many women from low resource environments continue to seek for the care of TBAs. In order to understand the care provided to refugee women during pregnancy and after birth, in a refugee camp, a study was conducted in Ifo Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya. The aim of this article therefore, is to document findings on participants’ perspectives on pre and post-natal care provided to women in refugee camps during pregnancy and after birth. This was a qualitative study conducted in Ifo refugee camp in Dadaab Kenya. Nine participants were purposively selected for the study to give their perspectives on the role of TBAs in providing caregiving support to refugee women during pregnancy and after birth. The participants included two married men, three traditional birth attendants, two Somali pregnant women and two refugee safe mothers. Data was collected through focus group discussions and interviews. The data was beefed up with feedback from dissemination of preliminary findings to stakeholders’ validation conference held at Kenyatta University. Findings revealed that TBAs play a critical role in supporting women during pregnancy and after birth. However, they are not able to attend to complications associated to delivery. Among the caring support cited include, guiding and counselling pregnant women, educating them on the importance of attending antenatal clinics, massaging women during labour, praying for the baby after birth, and escorting women to the health facilities to take their babies for immunization. It was also apparent that TBAs advise pregnant women on the herbs they should have in stock while pregnant. In addition, they advise women to breast feed their babies immediately after birth. While TBAs are able to assist un complicated births at home, it was apparent that it becomes challenging for them to provide support for women with complication during the birth process. In view of this, it will be more helpful for TBAs to be encouraged to guide and advise pregnant women to deliver in the health care facility, where they can escort them to get professional attention during birth","PeriodicalId":300833,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Pregnancy & Child Birth","volume":"326 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132982273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prophylactic antibiotics reduce SSIs but inappropriate use increases antibiotic resistance. The study aim was to assess single versus multiple-dose antibiotic prophylaxis for SSI prevention in a limited-resource setting. Methods: All patients undergoing ECS in a rural district hospital were assessed for eligibility from 2015 to 2016. Participants were randomized, Group A received one dose of 2 g Ampicillin 15 to 60 minutes before skin incision and Group B received 2 g prior to skin incision with additional 1g every 8 hours over 72 hours. Participants were followed for 30 days, Demographic and clinical data were collected by chart review and patient phone interviews were performed on Days 3, 7, 15 and 30. Results: Three hundred and one participants were analyzed (147 in Group A; 154 in Group B). There were 8 surgical site infections in Group A and 4 in Group B (p=0.089). The overall prevalence of surgical site infections was lower than expected (4.00%). Most of SSIs cases were diagnosed on day 7 (66.6% of all cases of SSI) and only 22.2% of cases were diagnosed at discharge (day 3). Only 1 additional case was diagnosed at day 15. Harlequin ichthyosis (HI) was a rare and extreme type that led to neonatal death. It was caused by mutations in the ABCA12 gene, and the inheritance pattern is autosomal recessive. Case report: We present a case of HI that was diagnosed postnatally by clinical review. Extreme ectropion, eclabium, flattened nose, and primitive ears were discovered in the fetus. As a result of HI complications, the fetus died. Conclusion: The presence of HI was linked to a poor prognosis and a high mortality rate.
