The models analyzed include analogs to Matern type I and type II networks. It is found that for our network models, with large N, the correlation between interferer positions does not significantly influence the bits/symbol resulting in simple approximations for the data rates achievable in such networks with moderately large numbers of diversity branches.","PeriodicalId":300161,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory Proceedings","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133230494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We allow full freedom in choosing modulation states with any number of signal, i.e., transmitted, and ancilla modes, subject only to an average energy, i.e., photon number, constraint in either the signal modes alone or in the signal and ancilla modes together. For lossless operation and unrestricted POVM measurements at the receiver, we find the explicit form of the modulation state that minimizes the average error probability under an energy constraint of N photons. Multiple signal modes, mixed states, and entanglement with an ancilla are shown to be unnecessary for optimum performance. We show that communication with zero error is possible if and only if N ≥ (M - 1)/2.","PeriodicalId":300161,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory Proceedings","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115985325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Orbits of the group of linear isometries of the space give rise to a translation association scheme. The structure of the dual scheme is important in studying duality of linear codes; this study is facilitated if the scheme is self-dual. We study the relation between self-duality of the scheme and that of the poset. We also give new examples of poset metric spaces and describe the association schemes that arise from linear isometries.","PeriodicalId":300161,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116462026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the transmitters is allowed to cooperate with the other transmitter by sending it some data before both transmitters convey information to the receiver. Assuming noiseless communication, what is the minimum number of bits that needs to be communicated by each transmitter to the receiver for a given number of cooperation bits? In this paper, first a general inner bound to the above three dimensional rate region is provided and shown to be tight in a number of interesting settings: the function is partially invertible, full cooperation, one-round point-to-point communication, two-round point-to-point communication, and cascade. Second, the related Kaspi-Berger rate distortion problem is investigated where the receiver now wants to recover the sources within some distortion. By using ideas developed for establishing the above inner bound, a new rate distortion inner bound is proposed. This bound always includes the time sharing of Kaspi-Berger's inner bounds and inclusion is strict in certain cases.","PeriodicalId":300161,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory Proceedings","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116992946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Equivalently, the PML distribution maximizes the permanent of a certain non-negative matrix. We reformulate this maximization problem as a double minimization problem of a suitable Gibbs free energy function. Because finding the minimum of this function appears intractable for practically relevant problem sizes, one must look for tractable approximations. One approach is to approximately find a minimum (or at least a local minimum) of the Gibbs free energy function by applying an alternating minimization algorithm where the steps are based on quantities that are obtained by Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling. One can show that this approach is equivalent to an algorithm that was proposed by Orlitsky et al. An alternative approach is to replace the Gibbs free energy function by a tractable approximation like the Bethe free energy function and to apply an alternating minimization algorithm to this function. As it turns out, empirically, this latter approach gives very good approximations to the PML distribution (or at least a locally optimal PML distribution), and, for the same level of accuracy, is two to three orders of magnitude faster than the former approach for practically relevant problem sizes. Moreover, the above free energy framework allows us to simplify some earlier proofs of properties of the PML distribution and to derive some new properties of the PML distribution, along with obtaining similar results for its Bethe approximation.","PeriodicalId":300161,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory Proceedings","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116903441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our aim is to provide theoretical insights for the optimality characterization of the problem, using both a cross-layer model formulation, which takes into account the effect of interference on achievable transmission rates, as well as a collision-based model, which does not incorporate the physical layer realities into the problem. We present the basic linear programming formulation of the problem and establish that the optimal schedule need not consist of more than N subset activation frames. We then prove that the problem is NP-hard for all reasonable continuous rate functions. Finally, we obtain sufficient and/or necessary conditions for optimality in a number of special cases.","PeriodicalId":300161,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory Proceedings","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116071087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All such schemes assume that users in the network will cooperate perfectly. However, in a decentralized network this assumption is far from true. Users are selfish and care only about their own rates. They can strategically deviate from their agreed role in such cooperative communication schemes leading to a possible degradation for all. In this paper, we study the incentives for cooperative relaying in a simple model, namely the generalized Gaussian relay channel model (or MAC-GF). We characterize all the Nash equilibrium rates and compare it with the Pareto-optimal rates of the generalized Gaussian relay channel model. granted.","PeriodicalId":300161,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116864758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It shows that the AED of the channel matrix decomposes into two separate bulks for practically relevant parameter choices and differs very much from the common assumption of independent identically distributed (iid) entries which induces the quarter circle law. This happens even without antenna correlation at either side of the channel. In order to tackle this problem the paper makes use of recent developments in free probability theory which allow to deal with complex-valued eigenvalue distributions of non-Hermitian matrices by means of quaternions.","PeriodicalId":300161,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory Proceedings","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121648948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The previously known best general DoF inner bound, inspired by the K user interference channel, was based on the decomposition of every transmitter and receiver into multiple single antenna nodes, transforming the network into an AM × AN user SISO X network. While such a decomposition is DoF optimal for the K user interference channel, a gap remained between the best inner and outer bound for the MIMO X channel. Here we close this gap with the new insight that the MIMO X network is only one-sided decomposable, i.e., either all the transmitters or all the receivers (but not both) can be decomposed by splitting multiple antenna nodes into multiple single antenna nodes without loss of DoF. The result is extended to SIMO and MISO X networks as well and in each case the DoF results satisfy the spatial scale invariance property. In addition, the feasibility of linear interference alignment is investigated based only on spatial beamforming without symbol extensions. Similar to MIMO interference networks, we show that when the problem is improper, it is infeasible.","PeriodicalId":300161,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory Proceedings","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121772795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In many of the considered models, the notion of time is either implicit, or it is closely interweaved with other mechanics of the model such that formally proving even simple statements becomes a tedious task. In this work, we develop an abstract formal model that captures exactly how the availability of clocks with “weak” synchrony guarantees can benefit parties; in particular, we show how - and at what cost - the “synchrony” of clocks can be improved. Proofs in this model are simple and the statements transfer to all models that satisfy the abstraction. The main contribution of this paper is not the actual statements we prove (which mostly verify folklore beliefs), but the formal model that follows the construction paradigm of abstract cryptography and allows to state these proofs in a simple yet rigorous manner. Indeed, the paper is a step towards a treatment of synchronous cryptographic protocols in this constructive sense.","PeriodicalId":300161,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory Proceedings","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124178370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
