In the past, number of delay models were developed mainly to estimate delays for exclusive phases (movements). In cases of left-turn movements that are served in protected/ permissive mode, there are very few models that can be used to estimate delays. Previously developed models for left/turn protected/permissive mode are based on a number of assumptions related to vehicular arrival/departure patterns. Thus, when used to estimate delays in a real-time manner, such models are prone to erroneous estimates. In this study, to overcome the limitations of current models, authors proposed a novel delay model for protected/permitted left turn operations based on Multigene Genetic Programming (MGGP) technique. Relevant data were collected on a cycle-by-cycle basis using the microsimulation model of real-world arterial. Using the MGGP, a novel delay model and its analytical formulation were proposed and compared with the benchmark model from the literature. The results indicate that the proposed model is more accurate and reliable and should be used as an alternative to traditional models. To strengthen the conclusions of our study, future work is mainly related to the expansion of the utilized dataset used for model development based on the field data. It is imagined that such an expanded dataset and additional options within MGGP will be explored to develop a more robust delay model.","PeriodicalId":299969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2nd the International Conference on Civil Engineering Fundamentals and Applications (ICCEFA'21)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129318328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Generalised Cost Function of Integrated Multimodal Transport","authors":"Paritosh Nandi, G. Sierpiński","doi":"10.11159/iccefa21.132","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11159/iccefa21.132","url":null,"abstract":"Extended Abstract To develop and implement Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) [1] planners in the European Union (EU) usually apply participatory approaches involving interdisciplinary planning teams with transport planners, urban designers, environment experts, as well as decision-makers, urban transport and mobility practitioners, citizens and other stakeholders. To evaluate the effect of SUMPs, the EU sets measurement goals derived from local or national objectives and adopts routine monitoring and assessment activities. In line with this broad-based approach this paper will investigate the integration of multimodal transport system in the EU in particular. Building missing links at borders between the EU Member States and the main European routes, removing bottlenecks of network interconnections or the terminal modes are important to the European Single market [2]. Moving infrastructure to digital mobility patterns, and technology implementation for renewable fuels might impose additional burden in terms of new investment in multimodal network and its holistic integration. Heeres et al [3] established a conceptual structure for differentiating varying degrees in a ‘solution space’ method in the projects of transport integration. They thought that sector-internal integration is a multimodal one with connected nodes and interlinking of local and regional level networks. More cost-effective external integration explicitly extends the scope of improving connectivity to other interconnected transit networks and other parameters such as place of residence, leisure activities, and the environment. This article also investigates the current renewable energy deployment pattern in Europe which needs an infrastructural change to tempt the private and public owners to deploy higher amount of renewable energy. Therefore the notion of multimodal integration is heavily dependent on the investment in infrastructure but the right kind of incentive to renewable energy will act in favour of the governmental goals and priorities. Particularly the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) [4] needs new investment infrastructure, renovation and modernization of the already existing network. This article finally investigates the generalized cost functions and constraints of multimodal transport and travellers’ choice taking into account the entire landscape of infrastructural changes required for the above-mentioned parameters and how this cost function plays out optimally across these factors.","PeriodicalId":299969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2nd the International Conference on Civil Engineering Fundamentals and Applications (ICCEFA'21)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123566107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

WIL today is a vital part of student learning [2], it is a process where students are attached to a company for weeks or even months during or towards the end of their academic courses. WIL is an important component in the Built Environment (BE) discipline education. A BE is the human-made environment that provides the setting for human activity, ranging in scale from buildings to cities and beyond. It is the human-made space in which people live, work, and recreate on a day-to-day basis [3]. WIL is very important and beneficial to undergraduate students because the relevant knowledge, competencies and experiences can be acquired, even before they graduate and join the industry [4]. Considering the present-day challenges and complexities of the BE industry, there is an increased need for undergraduates who do not only possess a sound academic background, but also the necessary work experience. In light of leveraging students to handle the various challenging demands of the present-day BE competently, this paper discusses and compares the benefits and limitations of WIL with the students’, universities’ and employers’ experiences. Recommendations were also given to overcome the limitations of WIL so that the WIL experience could be better for all the stakeholders. This research study was carried out with reference to literature published in conference papers, government reports and journals articles in order to review the various benefits and limitations of WIL. The period of the document review was from the last 11 years: 2010 to 2021. This is to ensure that the data collected are relatively current. Data from all the sources were analysed using content analysis which is a research technique for systemically explaining the meaning of qualitative data. The aim of the result was achieved by revealing that there are some key benefits and limitations that are similar or in contrast with the various stakeholders. An extensive literature search of 70 published articles found that the majority of them are from Australia and the United States. All the articles are related to the construction industry which includes Engineering, Construction Management, Architect and Quantity Surveying. After finding all the key benefits and limitations from various stakeholders’ experience, comparisons were made, with those, we can clearly see that there are many differences between the various stakeholder’s experience. As the saying goes, one man’s treasure is another man’s trash, what a person may consider a limitation to them could be a highly valued benefit to another person. Vice versa, a benefit for one person may be a major limitation for another person. This study will eventually contribute to a deeper understanding of the benefits and limitations of WIL from the students, universities and employ","PeriodicalId":299969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2nd the International Conference on Civil Engineering Fundamentals and Applications (ICCEFA'21)","volume":"313 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116100796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The post-COVID economic recovery plans across the globe have emphasized the investments in infrastructure as a means of invigorating the growth. In this sense, the infrastructure sector needs to seize on this opportunity to address the various gaps in management of infrastructures. This lecture provides a whole systems perspective on infrastructure asset management practices. The aim is to systematically characterize the common principles, gaps, and paradigms in infrastructure asset management. This is to advocate an integrated asset management approach that links operational and network-level decisions with the future socio-economic and environmental scenarios to ensure resilience and efficient coordination of infrastructure assets that are exposed to vulnerabilities due to increasing imbalance between levels of service and demand, increasing infrastructure asset complexities and their interdependencies, and the realities of decentralized/distributed management practices.","PeriodicalId":299969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2nd the International Conference on Civil Engineering Fundamentals and Applications (ICCEFA'21)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131535786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of the surge in module weight, mobile cranes are predominant, ensuring adequate ground stability under the lifting equipment since its debacle can have dire repercussions for the workers and the project. The traditional approach is to make use of timber/steel mats for ground stability. Before that, it is crucial to estimate the allowable soil bearing capacity as a prerequisite to reckon the compensation for deficient ground support. The crane rental companies' status quo approach collects this information from the client without incorporating mobile crane track/outrigger surface area (crawler crane track/mat, hydraulic crane outrigger mat). This contribution aims to develop a Visual basic computer application to determine soil's allowable soil bearing capacity for crane work. The developed application consolidates mobile crane footing area and computes allowable soil bearing capacity based on the soil data from a construction site's geotechnical reports. The developed application uses soil bearing capacity theorems (e.g., Terzaghi, Meyerhof, Hansen, and Vesic) for the calculations. The developed application will help practitioners estimate the allowable soil bearing capacity with the crane mat surface area to complement the information received from the clients.","PeriodicalId":299969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2nd the International Conference on Civil Engineering Fundamentals and Applications (ICCEFA'21)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126496078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If turbulence modelling is based on Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, estimating the turbulent scalar transport requires the definition of the turbulent Schmidt number (Sct), defined as the ratio of momentum diffusivity to mass one in a turbulent flow. However, no universal value has been accepted for this parameter as it is a property of turbulent flows. The practical role of establishing a suitable Sct in numerical studies of stormwater retention ponds is of the utmost importance because the assessment of the hydraulic efficiency of them is based on output mass concentration of tracer tests. In this study, several numerical simulations of a vortex-type stormwater retention pond were systematically carried out using FLOW-3D. A range of various turbulent Schmidt numbers were introduced in numerical simulations performed by different number of computational cells to investigate mesh sensitivity. Moreover, the effects of maximum turbulent mixing length as a user-defined or automatically computed value were assessed. The outcome of this study is an established numerical model with a constant value of maximum turbulent mixing length equal to 7% of the hydraulic diameter along with Sct= 0.625 which provides a close agreement with experimental results. Noticeably, the peak values of numerical dimensionless RDT curves are dramatically decreased, resulted in a close match with experimental results. This concludes that FLOW-3D has a considerable ability to appropriately predict mass diffusivity in vortex-type physics of turbulent flows.","PeriodicalId":299969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2nd the International Conference on Civil Engineering Fundamentals and Applications (ICCEFA'21)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127783311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Energy optimization is one of the critical aspects of Industry 4.0. Energy as the ninth waste in lean manufacturing results in CO2 emissions as a by-product. The practitioners take diverse initiatives to mitigate the impact of CO2 emissions by encouraging energy usage reduction. The impact of CO2 emissions on the environment is a significant concern for the 21 century. Organizations around the world are adopting novel sustainable approaches to minimize energy utilization to lessen the environmental impact. In the same way, modular construction uses lean concepts to minimize the seven wastes and, directly or indirectly, reduces energy utilization. With the advent of modular construction, the application of high-capacity mobile cranes surged. For modular construction activities, the crane industry uses crane mats, usually timber mats, for soil stability underneath the high-capacity mobile cranes. This research encompasses the calculations for the indirect/direct CO2 emissions of timber mat utilization versus a novel application of crane mats prepared of frozen silt. The finite element simulation estimates the equalling of frozen silt against Coastal Douglas-Fir mats, dependable upon construction site ambient temperature constraint. The results show a promising impact of using frozen silt in energy wastage and CO2 emissions reduction.","PeriodicalId":299969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2nd the International Conference on Civil Engineering Fundamentals and Applications (ICCEFA'21)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130240085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
