Her attitudes about growing older, the meaning of old age, and implicit ageist views are challenged during a chance encounter. This insight occurred in the most unlikely place—a racetrack—and during a time when she was certainly “off duty” as a gerontologist and thus, perhaps, most unprepared for the consequences of the interaction. The author is forced to reflect upon her own life and old age future, and is able to find serenity and peace in that vision.","PeriodicalId":299570,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Aging, Humanities, and The Arts","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126039300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article is a plea for a change in the way the condition commonly known as Alzheimer's disease is both publicly and professionally understood in our society.","PeriodicalId":299570,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Aging, Humanities, and The Arts","volume":"201 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133762307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through close readings of three Indian short stories about adult daughters' caregiving to their critically ill or dying mothers in a manner that recalls maternal caregiving to young children, it demonstrates how the maternal paradigm does not engage sufficiently with notions of reciprocity and is therefore unable to capture the dynamic nature of intergenerational exchange between adult children and their aging parents. Finally, it argues that neither the social contract theory of Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and Rawls with its basis in a notion of a self-interested individual, nor the maternal paradigm theory of feminist scholars such as Carol Gilligan and Sara Ruddick with their emphasis on an other-focused relationality provide an adequate model for capturing th...","PeriodicalId":299570,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Aging, Humanities, and The Arts","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122637901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Demographic and social changes, however, have affected the ability of the young to meet traditional expectations. Family sizes are much smaller than they once were, many young people live a distance from their parents, and a large number of women—traditional caregivers-work outside the family. Moreover, expectations of the young have been affected by their exposure to other cultures. In general, young people tend to prefer reciprocal patterns of mutual respect between generations. However, the values deeply rooted in their family systems and social structures are preserved even while the manifestation of these values is being modified. Thus, cultural influence persists; only the way of expressing respect is being modified.","PeriodicalId":299570,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Aging, Humanities, and The Arts","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128397740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this research study was to evaluate changes in attitudes toward older adults and aging of undergraduate students (n = 14) enrolled in an introductory gerontology course after completion of an oral history project. Attitudes toward older adults and aging were measured with visual analogue scales and were evaluated using a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design. Results indicate that significant changes in attitudes toward older adults (p ≤ .01) and the aging process (p ≤ .001) occurred. Students perceived that the project contributed positively to changes in attitudes and to their classroom experience.","PeriodicalId":299570,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Aging, Humanities, and The Arts","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128438058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
