Do these dying words reflect fanciful accounts at the highly charged time of death, or are there such dying words from reliable witnesses? A search of the professional care literature found minimal relevant information, but nonfiction and fiction sources of combat deaths provided examples of dying warriors calling “mother.” I interviewed hospice workers and found that in 10% to 25% of elderly deaths, the dying persons vocalized “mother” and similar parental terms. Such dying utterances may offer succor to the dying person.","PeriodicalId":299570,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Aging, Humanities, and The Arts","volume":"17 Suppl 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133387007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A model inspired by three Hungarian women artists who survived the Holocaust (Experience/Expression/Engagement) is illustrated through their experience of the Holo-caust, their creative expression well into their later years, and the impact of their work on engagement of self and others. The potential for creativity in later life, and the impact of creativity on healing and transformation is discussed and illustrated by the creative contributions of three survivors and their enduring legacy.","PeriodicalId":299570,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Aging, Humanities, and The Arts","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122584597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through poetry, this woman transformed challenging life experiences. Data analysis revealed themes of determination, spiritual strength, and creatively aging. The findings support knowledge development about how older women age and express their lives. Most of the participant's poetry was in the sonnet form, which can convey deep and universal insights. Thus, the aging experience was seen from an extraordinary perspective. The study led to a deeper understanding of a dynamic holistic perspective of aging.","PeriodicalId":299570,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Aging, Humanities, and The Arts","volume":"483 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122798760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four Japanese films over the last 30 years probe the depths of this loss, both to the individual and the caregiver. They dramatically represent changing images in Japan of elderly with dementia as well as the enduring values of family and caregiving. Kokotsu no Hito (“The Twilight Years,” 1973), Oriume (“Broken Plum Branch,” 2002), Ashita no Kioku (“Memories of Tomorrow,” 2006), and Mogari no Mori (“The Mourning Forest,” 2007) illuminate the challenges and loss as well as the creativity, resilience and meaning found in the process. Comparisons will be made with four recent Western films portraying Alzheimer's disease.","PeriodicalId":299570,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Aging, Humanities, and The Arts","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130581150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If this is true, one should expect such a turn to be manifest in the work of at least some artists who are active in old age. This essay argues that the late landscape paintings of James Reynolds exhibit just such a shift. Reynolds should be included among those few artists whose old age work presents convincing evidence of a distinctive old age style.","PeriodicalId":299570,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Aging, Humanities, and The Arts","volume":"158 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134173698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This undertaking amounts to a virtual cultural shift, known in the industry as culture change. Culture change is receiving growing popularity in the senior living industry; however the majority of organizations have yet to begin tackling this transformation. One of the contributions to this hesitancy may be that no universal explicit definition of culture change is accepted within the industry. This article, based on an extensive literature review, examines the current definitions within the culture change literature and proposes a new definition that may be helpful in understanding and undertaking this challenging holistic transformation.","PeriodicalId":299570,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Aging, Humanities, and The Arts","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131754471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Applying a family systems perspective and performance theory to research from nursing, social work, occupational therapy, sociology, and anthropology situates dementia in an embodied social context of relatedness. As a result, new knowledge emerges: when their sense of relatedness is supported, dementia-affected couples report experiencing increased well-being rather than the despair described in medical and psychological literature that focuses on the individualistic experience of dementia. These findings have implications for dementia care, research, and policy, and particularly for couples and families affected by the illness.","PeriodicalId":299570,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Aging, Humanities, and The Arts","volume":"225 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132481287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
