The Japanese case particle \"de\" (C) denotes particularly many roles, such as place, instrument and reason. The correspondence relationship between \"de\" and its Chinese translations is therefore complicated. This fact often causes mistranslation in Japanese-Chinese machine translation (MT). According to our small-scale experiments, the translation accuracy on \"de\" of two major online translation services are about 20% and 50%. In this paper we propose a method for translating the Japanese case particle \"de\" into Chinese, which determines the Chinese translation of \"de\" mainly by the semantic category of the noun preceding the particle. We implemented the method as pattern transfer rules on jaw/Chinese, a pilot Japanese-Chinese MT system. We evaluated the Chinese translations of \"de\" obtained by the method with 200 sentences from two sets of Japanese-Chinese parallel sentences, and got accuracy of 90% and 97%, respectively.","PeriodicalId":299331,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Asian Language Processing","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114175261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Japanese language has a complicated system of honorific expressions. In assemblies in Japan, speakers usually speak using honorific expression. Hence, we create a maximum entropy model for honorific expressions from assembly minutes released by Fukuoka City, Japan. Evaluations show that our model has an accuracy of 88.2% for choosing suitable honorific expressions. In particular, it shows the best precision of 95.9% for the classification of Sonkeigo at the end of a sentence.","PeriodicalId":299331,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Asian Language Processing","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126466410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

So the research on identification and transformation of comparative sentences in patent texts is very significant and can contribute to the patent Chinese-English machine translation. On the issue of identification of comparative sentences, there are some studies basically using statistical methods, but almost no study applies the rule-based method and no study uses the results of identification for Chinese-English machine translation. In this paper, based on HNC (Hierarchical Network of Concepts) theory, we applied the method based on rules to study the identification and transformation of comparative sentences in patent texts. Experiment shows us that the method can improve the performance of patent machine translation effectually.","PeriodicalId":299331,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Asian Language Processing","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127660846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional topic identification method always generated a single-layered topic structure which is usually inaccurate topic division even if generated manually by the human experts. This paper proposed a concept of hierarchical topic which used multi-layer topic tree structure to represent the text or text set. Secondly, this paper proposed an iterative text units clustering method to recognize automatically the hierarchical topic of the text set. In this method, text clustering processing paused when each topic in the text set were correctly divided into multiple sub-topics, and such processing continued until a hierarchical topic tree had been built. A difficult problem of this method was how to automatically determine multiple pause threshold values and was resolved by the minimized clustering entropy method in this paper. The results of our experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of the method.","PeriodicalId":299331,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Asian Language Processing","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127360822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The electropalatographic (EPG) and acoustic signals for five vowels /i, u, y, i1, i2/ in four tones were recorded. The results show: (1) the articulatory variation in vowel production was mainly induced by low tone (T3). (2) Two strategies for articulatory adjustment were identified: the tongue lowering and retraction was found for vowels in T3 syllables when the post-dorsum of tongue is involved in vowel articulation, as shown in /u, i1/, the increased tongue raising was found in T3 syllables when the pre-dorsum of tongue is involved in vowel production, as shown in /i, y, i2/. (3) The T3 influence on the articulatory measures for vowels tends to be present in the better part of the vocalic length, regardless of the pitch changes. (4) Consistent tonal effect on F1 for the vowels was found for which T4 tends to increase the F1. This tends to be attributed to the larynx raising that leads to the shortening of the vocal tract.","PeriodicalId":299331,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Asian Language Processing","volume":"109 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115427279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
