Positive rheotaxis refers to the ability of the sperm to direct itself and swim against the liquid current during the fertilization journey. In this study, we investigated the effects of various microchannel heights on sperm positive rheotaxis (PR) and sperm kinematics. We used two microchannels with the same width (200µm) and different heights (channel 1= 20 µm height and channel 2= 100 µm height). Sperm samples were obtained from two bulls with known fertility and analyzed using CASA. The results showed that PR and all sperm kinematics (VCL, VSL, VAP","PeriodicalId":299161,"journal":{"name":"Assiut Veterinary Medical Journal","volume":"4 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139162199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this regard, the current study investigated the quality attributes including sensory, TBA, TVB-N, pH and microbial loads of examined fish. Vacuum packing and acetic acid were found to possess potent antibacterial effects on a variety of microorganisms. The fish were divided into four groups after being gutted and filleted: Group A (GA): fish fillets were vacuum packaged in Polyamide/ Polyethylene (PA/PE) bags. Group B (GB): the fillets were stored in non-vacuum containers. Group C (GC): the fillets underwent chemical treatment by immersion in 1% acetic acid for 2 minutes at room temperature, drained for two minutes then vacuum packaged in Polyamide/ Polyethylene (PA/PE) bags. Group D (GD): the fillets treated as in GC stored in non-vacuum containers. All groups were stored at 2±1 o C, 80% CO 2 and 20% N 2 for 21 days. The experiment was repeated in triplicate. The sensory analysis of fish fillets revealed that samples in group C which were treated with acetic acid 1% in combination with vacuum packaging during storage for 21 days at 2±1 o C had the best sensory properties and the best shelf life, and a low pH value reduced or even limited microbial levels, and ensured the safety of different microbial counts as well as reduction of TBA and TVB-N in acetic acid-treated groups compared with other groups. Together with the sensory characteristics, the low or limited microbial counts (total viable count, total psychrotrophic count, and total coliform counts) suggested that autolysis or other causes other than microbial activity may be to blame for the deterioration. Meanwhile, the shelf-life of fish treated with vacuum packaging had a longer shelf-life than that treated with non-vacuum packaging. Overall, the research underscores the need for more research and development to produce seafood that is stable and safe against microbes and has a long shelf life in order to meet customer demand.","PeriodicalId":299161,"journal":{"name":"Assiut Veterinary Medical Journal","volume":"10 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139162424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is an extremely transmissible immune suppressor virus that has a significant financial impact on the poultry sector around the world resulting in increased vulnerability to various infections, adding to its negative effects on the efficacy of vaccines. The very virulent infectious bursal disease (vvIBDV) strains that are extremely virulent and cause a large amount of fatality in hens have emerged in recent years. The present study used reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) followed by sequencing to detect and molecularly characterize the VP1 and VP2 genes of IBDV. A phylogenetic study of the partial VP2 gene revealed that three field isolates belonged to Genogroup 3 and clustering Poland, Hong Kong, and Iran, with the highest identities of 98.32% and 98%, respectively. Based on an analysis of the amino acid sequence deduced from the VP2 gene at positions 242I, 253Q, 256I, 272I, 279D, 284A, 294I, 299S, and 330S, three IBDVs were shown to be very virulent strains, however, amino acid analysis of the VP1 in these two isolates showed that one of them had the distinctive vvIBDV TDN amino acid triplet, while the other isolates had a non-vIBDV HEG amino acid triplet at positions 145/146/147, respectively. The VP2 protein sequence of the circulatory vvIBDV genotype showed heterogeneity of a few amino acid substitutions within the hypervariable region with the vaccine strains ((Bursin, Cevac, and D78) that are commonly used in the vaccination program in Iraq. Conclusion: The current investigation might document the detection of highly virulent IBD virus from local farms during the outbreaks that emerged in the Sulaimani province. These data suggest that the current vaccination failure may be related to differences in the VP2 protein at HVR of the regionally circulating IBDV strain.","PeriodicalId":299161,"journal":{"name":"Assiut Veterinary Medical Journal","volume":"55 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139162247","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Erythropoietin (EPO) is the main regulator of erythropoiesis. Thymoquinone (TQ) protects brain cells from oxidative stress that causes neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. This study aims to investigate the VCR toxicity on the cerebrum as well as the possible neuroprotective effects of TQ and EPO against VCR toxicity in a rat model. An intraperitoneal injection of VCR (150 μg/kg) 3 times a week for 5 weeks caused marked histopathological changes in the brain such as neuronal degeneration with aggregations of glial cells around the degenerated neurons (satellitosis), congestion of blood vessels and severe demyelination in the white matter of the cerebrum. VCR considerably increased nestin, iBA1 and iNOS expression, while synaptophysin expression decreased. It also caused upregulation of caspase 3 and PARP expression, resulting in hemorrhage, demyelination, and neuronal degeneration. Treatment of rats with TQ or EPO either alone or in combination improved histopathological changes through down-regulation of nestin, iBA1, iNOS, caspase 3 and PARP. It was concluded that EPO and TQ ameliorate the neurotoxic effect of VCR on the cerebrum, however, a synergetic effect was evident when TQ and EPO were combined.","PeriodicalId":299161,"journal":{"name":"Assiut Veterinary Medical Journal","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135759925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many drugs and medicinal plants affect the uterus, some researchers reported that Salvadora persica (Miswak) is a phytoestrogen plant as it contains flavonoids and can be used as a contraceptive drug; however, no available investigations explain the histomorphological structure of the uterus after Miswak extract administration. Twelve female albino rats (165.3 ± 3.269 g) were divided equally into two groups. In the control group, the animals received normal saline daily for 4 weeks. While in the Miswak treated group, the animals received 900 mg/kg of body weight of the Miswak aqueous extract daily for the same period. Grossly, at the end of the experiment, our results revealed that the uteri in the Miswak-treated group had characteristics of low active organs; they were pale with low weight and high thickness. In contrast to the treated group, the uteri of the control group had the signs of active organs; they were more vascular, relatively thin and edematous. Microscopically, in the control group, the uterine lumen was wide and the mucosa was folded and covered by secretory columnar epithelium. The uterine glands were more active, and the myometrium was thick. Whereas, in the Miswak-treated group, the lumen was slit-like, the uterine glands were less active, and the uterine wall had thick lamina propria and thin myometrium. In conclusion, the oral administration of Miswak extract reduces the uterus activity. It showed a state of anestrous with a narrow slit-like lumen and a decrease in glandular activity.","PeriodicalId":299161,"journal":{"name":"Assiut Veterinary Medical Journal","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135759814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of twenty-two native sheep suffered from dystocia. Cases were treated in the veterinary hospital/ teaching hospital / University of Sulaimani. Out of twenty-two sheep suffered from dystocia, 14(63.6%) resulted from fatal causes and 8(36.4%) from maternal causes. Fetal status represented by 4(28.6%), 2(14.4%), 3(21.4%), 1(7.1%), 3(21.4%) and 1(7.1%), for schistosomus reflexus, oversize, head deviation, breach presentation, bilateral shoulder flection and transverse presentation, respectively. While maternal causes are classified as, 4 (50%) for ring womb, 2(25%) for uterine prolapse and 2(25%), for narrow pelvis. Parity, sex of the fetus and viability of the fetus are considered predisposing factors to cause dystocia in sheep. All Emergency cases of dystocia are treated through cesarean section. The sequel of postoperative surgical operation is represented by 3(13.6%), 7(31.8%), 2(8%), and 1(4.5%), for retained placenta, metritis, uterine prolapse and bleeding, respectively. Whereas, the effect of cesarean section on the fertility of sheep is represented by 8(42.1), and 11(57.9%), for pregnant and non-pregnant, respectively. In addition, the mortality rate of sheep in the study reached 3(13.6%), because of postpartum uterine infections. In conclusion, generally dystocia in sheep results from fetal and maternal causes, and due to prolonged time of labor the early intervention by cesarean section could be for saving the lambs and the dam.","PeriodicalId":299161,"journal":{"name":"Assiut Veterinary Medical Journal","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135759922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
