METHOD(S): This is a cross-sectional survey including 1,554 male and female participants aged 20-65 years in Turkey who completed the 21-item Depression, anxiety, stress scale (Dass-21), Burnout and Fear of cOViD-19 scale (FcV-19s). Bivariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed. RESULT(S): Significant differences were found between two groups defined as HCWs-frontline and non-frontline, in the following characteristics: (P=0.013), gender (P<0.001), education (P<0.001), occupational status (P<.001), income (P=0.003), working-years experience (P<0.001), number hospital rooms assigned (P=0.024), number of persons living with (P=0.024), and smoking habits (P=0.018). The findings showed that the prevalence of depression anxiety and stress was significantly higher among the frontline workers when compared to non-frontline ones (all P<=0.018). They also reported significantly higher scores of fear of COVID-19 for all items (P<0.001). The mean scores of burnout items were significantly higher among frontline-HCWs as well as all items regarding the COVID-19 (P<0.001). The multivariate stepwise regression analysis confirmed Predictors for depression were: feeling the burnout (physical / mental exhaustion), feeling emotionally exhausted from work, clammy hand, number of years of work experience, fear of family members catching infection, can't sleep because the risk of getting cOViD-19. Meanwhile, hardworking, number of years at work, feeling depressed and burnout (physical / mental exhaustion) form current COVID-19 work, were all considered main risk factors for anxiety. CONCLUSION(S): The findings of this study determined that fear and burnout related COVID-19 were significantly associated with high scores of depression, anxiety, and stress among frontline-hcWs, which requires immediate action and support. This narrative review attempted to explore previous research at the objective to advance understanding of psychological essence and genesis on this phenomenon. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: On the research topic, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycInfo and PubMed original articles, dissertations and monographs were found to be included in the overview (totally, 109 publications). We presented an analysis of numerous investigations and review works with the aim to fill the existing large gap in the psychological explanation of the emergence and functioning of alexithymia. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: The truth is that alexithymia is still predominantly studied at the clinical-medical level. Namely, psychological roots are not considered in research or reviews at all, and no consensus on alexithymia psychological origin exists. Evidence indicated that whilst the existing research findings establish multisided relationships between alexithymia and various risk-factors, extremely little is known about its psychological origin and mechanism. CONCLUSION(S): The present overview is the first attempt to elucidate psychological essence and genesis of alexithymic symptoms and delve into presenting a disclosure and adequate explanation of the psychological mechanism of alexithymia functioning. Moreover, for the first time an innovative definition of alexithymia is given within the framework of the explanatory-functional psychological paradigm. This article is a narrative review with less rigorous methodology;nevertheless, it is useful for coherent detailed highlighting the problem posed and in cases when too much research from different scientific fields and directions is analyzed. Lack of a suit-able therapeutic regime and administration of a variety of treatments could worsen disease manifestations. Some medical interventions besides the high level of stress and quarantined conditions could induce severe depression and even suicide attempts. Here we presented a 42-year-old man without a history of psychiatric disorders that had been admitted to the clinic due to worsening of his dyspnea. After history taking and physical examination, he had been hospitalized and interferon, corticosteroids, and other conservative treatments had been started. According to his clinical manifestations, the doses and medications had been changed the next days. On the morning of his seventh day of hospitalization he had several suicidal attempts which were not successful and after changes in his medications, starting antidepressant drugs, and visiting his family members he had been discharged without the idea of suicide and depressed mood. This report showed the important role of medical staff in monitoring the mental health of COVID-19 patients as there are many risk factors for them to develop psychiatric disturbance. They should be aware of the possible effect of drugs in the alternat-ing mood of patients and even causing suicidal thoughts. We also suggest increasing the level of tryptophan sources in meals of patients and administration of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in patients with signs of depression after further studies.","PeriodicalId":29829,"journal":{"name":"Minerva Psychiatry","volume":"13 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90167975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
