The manipulation and exchange of semantically enriched and precise product information can enhance the quality of an e-commerce system and offer a high level of interoperability with other systems. Product information consists of product attributes and the relationships between products. Product categorization (or classification) is one type of such relationships. Ontology can play an important role in the formalization of product information. Although the idea of utilizing ontology for e-catalogs has been raised before, we are yet to find an operational implementation of applying ontology in the domain. In this paper, we report on our recent effort to build an operational product ontology system for the government procurement service. The system is designed to serve as a product ontology knowledge base; not only for the design and construction of product databases but also for search and discovery of products. We introduce some of the issues that we have experienced in the project, so that our work may serve as a reference model for similar projects in the future.","PeriodicalId":297129,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Data Engineering Issues in E-Commerce","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127122308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our integration framework takes advantage of the constructs and relationships existing within XML schemas. Two processes are involved in our integration framework. The first one is to convert XML schemas into UML class diagrams. The second is to build a multidimensional model from the UML class diagrams. This paper focuses on the issues in the second process. We describe how to represent a multidimensional model using a UML snowflake diagram and how to represent the UML snow/lake diagram using XML schemas. Our advanced XML schema-based representation of a multidimensional model is used as metadata in our prototype system for processing OLAP queries. It elegantly holds the information within a UML snowflake diagram such as the retrieval path through which we can obtain the participating XML data sources for OLAP operations. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first people to apply the advantages of XML Schemas during integrating XML data sources for virtual OLAP and to propose an XML schema-based method for representing a UML snowflake diagram that integrates heterogeneous XML data sources.","PeriodicalId":297129,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Data Engineering Issues in E-Commerce","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125581273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ASPs deliver application capabilities to multiple entities across the Internet. Although the ASP model has a number of problems, including customization, most experts agree that it still has practical commercial value. Recently, ASPs have been adopted as a new model for information technology (IT) delivery to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Moreover, through Web services, ASPs should satisfy various demands by tailoring services for specific business types in SMEs. To promote ASPs, it is important not only to continue to advance technologically but also to build a basis of privately initiated ASPs under government policy. In this context, we describe Korean projects that are organizing five consortia of ASP solutions with the government's financial support and strengthening the basis of Web Services by establishing related institutional systems. As a result, 370,000 SMEs in Korea were provided with ASP solutions by the end of 2004, and the government continues to strive for the informatization of one million SMEs with Web-services-based ASPs.","PeriodicalId":297129,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Data Engineering Issues in E-Commerce","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128689491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As standards became more complex to provide additional message types and variants, programmers and businesses started calling for simpler, semantically-enabled, systems; some even predicting traditional EDI's imminent demise. Numerous projects to create successor systems using XML were unable to stop traditional EDI's growth. DERI is taking a different approach: ontologizing EDI to allow the creation of semantically enabled messages, while being backward compatible with traditional systems. We argue that ontologizing syntax first enables automatic calculation of the intersection of message formats necessary for initiating new EDI partnerships as well as provides the groundwork for ontologizing message meanings.","PeriodicalId":297129,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Data Engineering Issues in E-Commerce","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130513531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We observe that in dynamic content Web applications, the most recently inserted items are also the ones that register the highest activity. For example, the newest books in a bookstore are also the ones more frequently browsed and bought. Hence, assuming repeatable queries, a particular read-only query response is likely to incrementally change as new rows are added to the queries tables. We avoid the cached query response invalidations that would otherwise occur due to the addition of new items by keeping the newly inserted rows in small temporary tables. This allows us to reuse cached responses for partial coverage of query results. A query result is then obtained from merging an existing cached response with one or more lightweight residual query results that involve the temporary tables. In addition, we enhance our cache with other partial coverage techniques based on per-query semantic information such as sub-range queries for all queries that match a specific template. We implement semantic query caching on top of an existing template-based cache with column-based invalidations. Our evaluation is based on a dynamic content site using the Apache Web server with Tomcat Java servlets and the MySQL relational database. We use the industry-standard TPC-W e-commerce benchmark as our benchmark application. We conclude that augmenting transparent query caching with the ability to retrieve partial results from the cache improves performance substantially in terms of latency and to a lesser extent in terms of hit-rate and throughput.","PeriodicalId":297129,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Data Engineering Issues in E-Commerce","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130885191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In current volume discount mechanisms, items are not allocated efficiently to buyers. Namely, social surplus is not maximum in existing volume discount schemes. To solve this problem, we propose a volume discount mechanism based on the seller's reservation price and the payment adjustment value. First, a seller registers his/her items with the evaluation value functions. The seller's evaluation value is sealed and each buyer bids his/her evaluation value as sealed bid. After the deadline, the mechanism determines the allocation of bundles of items. A tentative price is decided and the payment adjustment value is calculated. Finally, the payment amount is calculated. Our mechanism has some key advantages. First, the mechanism is Pareto efficient. Second, our mechanism is a strategy-proof mechanism, that is, it has the incentive compatibility. Third, our mechanism provides individual rationality. Fourth, our mechanism is made based on the volume discount system, where the seller can give a signal indicating a discount for buyers. Finally, our mechanism weakens the influence of false name bids.","PeriodicalId":297129,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Data Engineering Issues in E-Commerce","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124836889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such externalized descriptions in ontological format are used for purposes ranging from search and retrieval to information integration and to service composition. The barrier to more wide-spread use of ontologies for such applications is the lack of support in the currently available middleware stacks used in enterprise computing. This paper presents our work on developing an enterprise-scale ontology management system that provide APIs and query languages, and scalability and performance that enterprise applications demand. We present a novel approach to representing ontologies in relational database tables to address the scalability and performance issues.","PeriodicalId":297129,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Data Engineering Issues in E-Commerce","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125488784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Papits users can share various research information and survey the corpora of their particular fields. To develop Papits, we need to design a mechanism to identify a user's interest. Also, when constructing an effective paper recommendation system, it is important to carefully create user's models. We propose a method to construct user's models using the scale-free network. The scale-free network has vertices and edges, and ensures growth by 'preference attachments'. Our method applies a paper viewing history to construct a scale-free network based on the word co-occurrence. A constructed network consists of vertices that represent words, and edges that represent the word co-occurrence. In our method, a paper is added to the network as indicated by a user's paper viewing history. Additionally we define the 'topic weight'. By using two elements; the topic frequency and the topic recency, we calculate the topic weight. By using the word co-occurrence in a database, we measure the topic frequency. Also, by using the Jaccard coefficient, we measure the topic recency. Our result indicates that our method can effectively recommend documents for Papits users.","PeriodicalId":297129,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Data Engineering Issues in E-Commerce","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129756498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We use \"data hoarding\" to allow business transactions to be processed on the mobile client despite of disconnection, which is implemented by the materialized view. We split the synchronization of a mobile transaction with the server database into 2 steps: intermediate and final synchronization. The intermediate synchronization uses the high cost wireless medium while the final synchronization generally uses the low cost communication medium such as a wired LAN. User can customize the synchronization details including the synchronization type for each data object through the materialized view definition expressed in extended SQL. We present the Transaction-Centric Split Synchronization (TCSS) algorithm and evaluate its performance. It supports the customized synchronization for each object that a transaction accesses. Appropriately selected synchronization details considering the data object's semantics can make it possible to save the power consumption of the mobile device and wireless communication cost.","PeriodicalId":297129,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Data Engineering Issues in E-Commerce","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121738017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Beyond the usual keyword search this opens the arena for attribute-based search engines, including parametric search and preference search. We analyze the impact of different search techniques for such e-catalogs on the overall search process costs. It turns out that preference search has a high potential to significantly reduce the process costs. A large-scale use case with the MAN2B e-procurement platform supports our claim. We identify improvements achievable by using preference search, in particular less navigation steps during the product search and better search results due to the BMO query model. Expensive cases, where frustrated users accept bad search results or phone up the company's purchasing department, should decrease significantly. This in turn will enable the purchasing department to focus more on strategic issues like supplier relationship management than on operative issues as it still happens widely today.","PeriodicalId":297129,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Data Engineering Issues in E-Commerce","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115188049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
