In sparse representation, features extracted from the training data of each subject are used to develop a dictionary. In this work, Gabor filters are used for feature extraction. Classification is performed by extracting features from the test data and using the dictionary for representing the test data. The class of the test data is then determined based upon the involvement of the dictionary entries in its representation. Experimental results conducted on the University of Notre Dame (UND) collection G dataset, containing large appearance, pose, and lighting variability, yielded a rank-one recognition rate of 98.46%. The proposed system outperforms the method described in [1], which achieves a recognition rate of 96.88% when evaluated on the same dataset. Moreover, the proposed system was evaluated on a greater number of test images per subject, demonstrating its robustness.","PeriodicalId":294848,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems (BTAS)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114187146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These animals can cause false accepts against many others and compromise the security of the system. The aim of this paper is to develop a fusion algorithm which has security against both of them while minimizing the number of query samples the genuine claimant has to input. To achieve this aim, we first propose a minimum log-likelihood ratio based sequential fusion scheme (MLR scheme). We prove that the MLR scheme keeps WAP (Wolf Attack Probability) and LAP (Lamb Accept Probability), the maximum of the claimant-specific FAR and the enrollee-specific FAR, less than the desired value if the score distributions are perfectly estimated, except in the case of adaptive spoofing wolves. We also prove that the MLR scheme is nearly optimal with respect to the average number of inputs (ANI) of the genuine claimant under some conditions. We secondly propose an input order decision scheme based on the KL (Kullback-Leibler) divergence which maximizes the expectation of the genuine log-likelihood ratio, to further reduce ANI of the MLR scheme in the case where the KL divergence differs from one modality to another. The results of the experimental evaluation using the CASIA-FingerprintV5 showed the effectiveness of our schemes.","PeriodicalId":294848,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems (BTAS)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121918072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To find the approximate distance of the subject from the reference camera, our algorithm uses information from facial biometrics, specifically the inter-pupil distance (IPD), and eye-to-lips distance(ELD). A trigonometric relationship is formulated to calculate the steering parameters of the other cameras. Moreover, a new robust facial feature detector is also proposed in order to estimate the required biometrics. Several experiments are reported to evaluate the proposed system.","PeriodicalId":294848,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems (BTAS)","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117033218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the process of automatically detecting kinship in facial images is a challenging and relatively less explored task. The reason for this includes limited availability of datasets as well as the inherent variations amongst kins. This paper presents a kinship classification algorithm that uses the local description of the pre-processed Weber face image. A kinship database is also prepared that contains images pertaining to 272 kin pairs. The database includes images of celebrities (and their kins) and has four ethnicity groups and seven kinship groups. The proposed algorithm outperforms an existing algorithm and yields a classification accuracy of 75.2%.","PeriodicalId":294848,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems (BTAS)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126902888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Contrary to a common belief, it has been shown that they can be cracked by spoofing only one biometric trait. Robustness evaluation of multi-modal systems in serial fusion mode has not yet been investigated, instead. Thus, the aim of this paper is to comparatively evaluate the robustness of multi-modal systems, in serial and parallel fusion modes, under spoofing attacks. In particular, we empirically investigate the vulnerability of serial and parallel fusion of face and fingerprint biometrics to real spoofing attacks. Our results show that multi-modal systems in both fusion modes are vulnerable to attacks against a single bio-metric trait. On the other hand, they show that the serial fusion mode can attain a favorable trade-off between performance, verification time, and robustness against spoofing attacks.","PeriodicalId":294848,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems (BTAS)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130265448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a block based face analysis approach is proposed which provides a fairly good recognition performance together with the advantage of robustness to such kind of alterations. For this study, a simulated nose alteration face database is used which is prepared using FRGC v1.0. Since this is a 3D database, the approach can be tested both in 2D and 3D, which is one of the contributions of this study. Furthermore, differently from previous works, baseline results for the original database are reported. The impact which is purely due to the applied nose alterations is measured using both the proposed approach and the standard techniques which are based on holistic description for comparison. The results indicate that although both 2D and 3D modalities lose precision due to alterations, the proposed approach is superior in terms of both the recognition performance and robustness to alterations compared to standard techniques.","PeriodicalId":294848,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems (BTAS)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115603427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed iris segmentation approach is developed based on the cellular automata which evolves using the Grow-Cut algorithm. The major advantage of the developed approach is its computational simplicity as compared to the prior iris segmentation approaches developed for the visible illumination iris segmentation images. The experimental results obtained from the three publicly available databases, i.e. UBIRIS.v2, FRGC and CASIA.v4-distance have respectively achieved average improvement of 34.8%, 31.5% and 31.4% in the average segmentation error, as compared to the recently proposed competing/best approaches. The experimental results presented in this paper clearly demonstrate the superiority of the developed iris segmentation approach, i.e., significant reduction in computational complexity while providing comparable segmentation performance, for the distantly acquired iris images.","PeriodicalId":294848,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems (BTAS)","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115001884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These cameras differ in manufacturing technology, including image acquisition spectrum and illumination settings. For large scale applications (e.g. UID system in India) where cameras from several vendors are likely to be used for iris enrollment and authentication, iris camera interoperability is an important consideration. The question we address here is: will the matching accuracy differ in matching iris images captured by two different cameras compared to images captured by the same camera? We propose an iris camera classification-based preprocessing framework to address iris interoperability. The camera classification output is used to perform selective iris image enhancement. Experimental results on the IIITD Multi-Sensor Iris database collected locally and the Notre Dame Cross Sensor database show a significant improvement in the cross-camera iris recognition accuracy using the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":294848,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems (BTAS)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123969033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, to our knowledge, no work has addressed how to achieve low error rates in situations where only weak keystroke templates (i.e., templates created from a single enrollment session) are available. To address the problem, we propose a framework comprising of impostor score based normalization, impostor score based rejection, and fusion. We introduce a new formulation to incorporate reject option in verification with weak templates and develop a new impostor score based rejection method called Order Statistic (OS) rejection method. We compare the performance of OS rejection method with two other impostor score based rejection methods - 1) Otsu and 2) Gaussian. We performed experiments on a large keystroke database of 1100 users. Results show that our proposed framework significantly reduces the EERs of continuous keystroke verification with weak templates and the OS rejection method achieves better error-reject trade-off than Otsu and Gaussian rejection methods. We achieved 59.97 percent to 86.74 percent reduction in average EERs compared to the individual verifiers when we used OS rejection method in conjunction with impostor score based normalization and fusion.","PeriodicalId":294848,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems (BTAS)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130838224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the mechanisms that derive eye movements highly depend on each person's idiosyncrasies, cues that reflect at a certain extent individual characteristics may be captured and subsequently deployed for the implementation of a robust identification system. Our methodology involves the employment of a non - parametric statistical test, the multivariate Wald - Wolfowitz test (WW-test), in order to compare the distributions of saccadic velocity and acceleration features, which are extracted while a person fixates on visual stimuli. In the evaluation section we use two publicly available datasets that supply recorded eye movements from a number of subjects during the observation of a moving spot on a computer screen. The resulting identification rates exhibit the efficacy of the suggested scheme to adequately segregate people according to their eye movement traits.","PeriodicalId":294848,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems (BTAS)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125446621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
