EPR was the brain child of the NHS' National Programme for Information Technology, under the Blair government.1 Since then, attempts have been made to install EPR in secondary care ‐ a typical example being the installation of specialist imaging systems in hospital trusts.2 The primary aim of EPR was to make the NHS services efficient via digitised patient records that could be viewed, discussed and transferred electronically between clinicians and/or trusts.1,3 Other anticipated uses of EPR were to provide easy patient access to services such as e‐referrals and e‐prescriptions, as well as appointment systems.3,4 Here, we discuss EPR and information technology in plain language, and assess the impact of EPR on NHS secondary care orthodontic services.","PeriodicalId":294795,"journal":{"name":"Faculty of Dental Surgery","volume":"145 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126878679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

So much so that, within healthcare, the theoretical concept is referred to as ‘evidence‐based design’, in which ‐ through form and function ‐ the positive interaction and outcomes that buildings and their environments can have on the health, recovery, safety and wellbeing of patients and carers ‐ and on the health and morale of its staff ‐ is considered. In view of Birmingham's new £50 million Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry opening its doors to the public earlier this year, this article provides a précis of the establishment, and illustrates how evidence‐based healthcare design concepts have been woven into its design.","PeriodicalId":294795,"journal":{"name":"Faculty of Dental Surgery","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121219633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is safe to say that things will change, some at a cost, while hopefully others will be made to work to the advantage of the UK. Dentistry will not be immune to Brexit‐related changes. Indeed, with the anticipated ‘hard’ Brexit, the profession and the provision of oral healthcare in the UK will face a number of changes, some of which will pose challenges but hopefully also provide not‐to‐be‐missed opportunities for the profession. A failure to respond positively to Brexit developments may disadvantage us all.","PeriodicalId":294795,"journal":{"name":"Faculty of Dental Surgery","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126364771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
