Viggiani","doi":"10.1201/B17034-246","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1201/B17034-246","url":null,"abstract":"Artificial Ground Freezing is one of the construction techniques that were extensively adopted during construction of Line 1 of Napoli Underground, to ensure stability and waterproofing of the platform tunnels and inclined passageways during excavation below the ground water table through loose granular soils of pyroclastic origin (Pozzolana) and a fractured soft rock (Neapolitan Yellow Tuff). The aim of the paper is to study the behavior of the Pozzolana and Neapolitan Yellow Tuff subject to freezing and thawing cycle at constant vertical stress under oedometric condition. As the temperature decreases the ice content increases and a liquid ice-surface tension, s-li, develops at the interface of the two phases as the temperature decreases. This tension must be balanced by the suction s defined as the difference in frozen and liquid water pressure Pi and Pl respectively. Two oedometers working under suction and temperature controlled conditions have been modified to work with temperature below zero degree. In many cases, data for the site are limited and the designer must make assumptions in order to carry out the design analyses. This can lead to overly conservative modelling, which in turn results in conservative, more expensive solutions. Closure models rely on climate data and unsaturated material parameters as the key inputs and there can be considerable errors if the climate data or unsaturated parameters are inaccurate. In order to provide site-specific climate information, as well as unsaturated parameters, field moisture content and matric suction measurements of the desiccation and resaturation cycles of sulphide nickel tailings located in an arid climate have been collected over a period of two years, along with climate data from a weather station installed at the site. These data are compared with a numerical model calibrated against data collected during a laboratory column test carried out under controlled conditions, which showed close agreement with the field data. This paper presents a comparison of the field data collected to a model that was calibrated against laboratory column data.
