Harking back to the founding moment of the journal, the author makes a case for recuperating the critical impulse that animated the project when it assembled then non-mainstream approaches - like microhistory, Alltagsgeschichte , or history from below - under the common denominator of \"Historical Anthropology\", while raising the question of whether the focus on \"culture\" still provides the critical leverage it exerted at the time. She then reviews recent anthropological debates on the so-called \"ontological turn\" that unearthed the limitations of epistemological or representational approaches to alterity. In particular, the author draws attention to a sample of approaches developed in anthropology - especially by Philippe Descola, Eduardo Viveiros de Castro and Marilyn Strathern -, which provide heuristic tools that might support a renewal of the initial impulse towards radical historicization in Historical Anthropology.","PeriodicalId":292689,"journal":{"name":"Historische Anthropologie","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129781832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sein Onkel Claudio Treves war ein bekannter italienischer Sozialistenführer, und bei der wohlhabenden Familie, die unter anderem auch eine Sommervilla im mondänen Seebad Alassio besaß, ging Prominenz aus Politik, Wirtschaft und Kultur ein und aus. Zu Levis Bekanntenkreis gehörten unter anderem Alberto Moravia und später Italo Calvino. Er studierte Medizin in Turin und Paris und spezialisierte sich als Internist auf Leberund Gallenerkrankungen. Allerdings standen seine künstlerischen und journalistischen Interessen von Anfang an gleichberechtigt neben dem medizinischen Brotberuf. 1934/35 wurde er aufgrund seiner antifaschistischen Aktivitäten in der Untergrundgruppe „Giustizia e Libertà“ verhaftet und für drei Jahre ins süditalienische Lukanien, die heutige Basilikata verbannt. Die Verbannung in entlegene Regionen war damals in Italien eine geläufige Strafmaßnahme; die Konfinierten, das heißt ‚Umgrenzten‘ hatten sich regelmäßig bei den lokalen Polizeibehörden zu melden, durften ihren Verbannungsort nicht verlassen und waren einer strengen Briefzensur unterworfen. Levi verbrachte zunächst vier Monate in Grassano, einer Kleinstadt unweit von Matera, und wurde dann aus undurchsichtigen Gründen nach Aliano, einem abgelegenen Gebirgsdorf in der südöstlichen Basilikata ‚versetzt‘. Er musste dort weitere acht Monate seiner Strafe, vom September 1935 bis Mai 1936 absitzen, dann kam er durch die Generalamnestie, die nach der Eroberung Addis Abebas im Abessinienkrieg erlassen worden war, wieder frei. Er ging nach Paris ins Exil, wo er schon früher ein Atelier hatte, und er schrieb nach seiner Rückkehr 1944/45, in den politisch unübersichtlichen, von vagen Aufbruchshoffnungen begleiteten Zeiten am Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs, seinen ‚Roman‘, der eigentlich gar keiner war,1 sondern lediglich eine neorealistische Reportage seiner Verbannungserfahrungen im Mezzogiorno. „Cristo si è fermato a Eboli“, erstmals 1945 bei Einaudi in Turin verlegt, wurde zu einem in mehr als 40 Sprachen übersetzten literarischen Welterfolg und von Francesco Rosi 1978/79 verfilmt.2 Im postfaschistischen Italien war der Ro-","PeriodicalId":292689,"journal":{"name":"Historische Anthropologie","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124304538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
