In the proposed architecture, the transcription coming out from a speech recognition system is used to disambiguate the result of a handwriting recognition module. A set of keywords is built from the transcription module and used to rescore the outputs of both the handwriting classifier and the structural analysis module. Performances evaluated on the HAMEX dataset show a significant improvement over a single modality system.","PeriodicalId":291062,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126033775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But a drawing is not only a shape. It is also all the gestures which constitutes the drawing activity, as well as their planning. Pen-based interfaces give us the possibility to analyze this dimension of sketching. We call this kind of analysis: procedural analysis. In this article, we will show how to identify the privileged drawing procedures of users by identifying a constant pattern despite a huge within-drawer variability in drawing procedures. After stating how to extract this constant pattern, we shall show how we can use those results into a drawing-based user identification method.","PeriodicalId":291062,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"190 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114855466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the reason that the same handwritten image page has different characteristics, we propose in this paper a multilevel segmentation framework for handwritten historical documents. In this framework, one or many segmentation methods are selected according to the input document features. This framework is tested on the IAM historical database (60 images) and on images from the segmentation competition for handwritten document segmentation held at ICFHR 2010. The evaluation of the segmentation framework is based on several evaluation metrics. The tests show that the proposed framework gives promoting results.","PeriodicalId":291062,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130693452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In applications involving OCR, distinction of machine-printed and hand-written characters is important, so that they can be sent to separate recognition engines. Identification of hand-written parts is useful in deleting those parts and cleaning the document image as well. In this paper a classification system is presented which takes a connected component in the document image and assigns them to two classes namely \"machine-printed\" and for \"hand-written\" classes, respectively. The proposed system contains a preprocessing step, which smoothes the object border and finds the Connected Component. Bangla script specific features are extracted from that Connected Component image, and a standard classifier based on SVM generates the final response. Experimental results on a data set show that the proposed approach achieves an overall accuracy of 96.49%.","PeriodicalId":291062,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122135590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The technique uses an equimass segmentation approach to non-uniformly split signatures into a standard number of regions. Successively, a multiple matching technique is adopted to estimate stability of each region, based on cosine similarity. The GPDS database has been considered for the experimental test. The results demonstrate the validity of the novel approach and highlight some directions for further research.","PeriodicalId":291062,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128148919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a handwritten character sample is composed of one or more strokes. Seventy five such stroke classes have been identified on the basis of the varying handwriting styles present in the character database. Each character sample is a sequence of strokes emanating from these stroke classes. Another database of handwritten Bangla strokes has been developed from the character database. This is the first such database for Bangla script. Certain stroke level features are defined on the basis of certain extremum points which represent the stroke shape reasonably well. The proposed character classification method is a two-stage approach. First, a probability distribution is estimated for each stroke class using the stroke features and then an HMM based character classifier is designed using each stroke class as a state. The parameters of both the stroke class distributions and the character class HMMs are estimated on the basis of the training set having 29,951 character samples. The character level recognition accuracy obtained by the proposed method on the test set having 8,616 samples, is 91.85%.","PeriodicalId":291062,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114599738","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As matter of this fact, multi-classifier systems have been widely adopted in many applications for which very high classification performance is necessary. Notwithstanding, multi-classifier system design is still an open problem. In fact, complexity of multi-classifiers systems make the theoretical evaluation of system performance very difficult and, consequently, also the design of a multi-classifier system. This paper presents a new approach for the design of a multi-classifier system. In particular, the problem of feature selection for a multi-classifier system is addressed and a genetic algorithm is proposed for automatic selecting the optimal set of features for each individual classifier of the multi-classifier system. The experimental results, carried out in the field of handwritten digit recognition, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":291062,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126977564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Transcribing and deciphering these manuscripts is considered complicated and problematic, especially due to particular characteristics of medieval handwriting and the composition and conservation of these documents. In this paper, a new problem in handwriting recognition is addressed: the detection of abbreviations in medieval medical manuscripts. We propose a histogram-based method to detect these specific kinds of characters. The results achieved with real medieval medical manuscripts are very promising, and it opens new research lines in handwriting recognition.","PeriodicalId":291062,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127859932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For each Beta profile we associate an elliptic arc to fit the initial stroke in the trajectory domain. The network architecture consists of an input layer which uploads the set of Beta-elliptic characteristics as input, hidden layers and the output layer where script coordinates X(t) and Y(t) are estimated. A separate timing network prepares the input data. This latter involves the time-index starting time of each simple stroke for an appropriate handwriting movement signal. The experiments showed that the neural network model could be applied for the case of Latin handwriting scripts as well as Arabic handwriting scripts. New ways are proposed for the application of the neural network model such as: generation of complex handwriting movements, shape and character recognition.","PeriodicalId":291062,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134113177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This problem is emphasized in settings where characters may have widely different sizes and there is no absolute scale. We propose methods that use size information to adjust shape-based classification to take this phenomenon appropriately into account. These methods may be thought of as a pre-classification in a size-based feature space and are general in nature, avoiding hand-tuned heuristics based on particular characters.","PeriodicalId":291062,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131215421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
