In this paper we present the XAM system, providing application mobility through a peer-to-peer based solution over heterogeneous networks. Our architecture takes into consideration established requirements of application mobility, being application identification and distribution; context-awareness and context quality; seamlessness; heterogeneity support; and usability. Our system differs from traditional systems as it provides application mobility in a decentralized manner over heterogeneous networks, using different communication technologies. Following the evaluation of our system, we also discuss major challenges and possibilities for the continuing evolution of application mobility systems.","PeriodicalId":290924,"journal":{"name":"38th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks - Workshops","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130105695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication paradigm enables devices used in all live aspects to communicate and share information with limited human intervention. In this paper we present an M2M telemedicine service to monitor Electrocardiagram (ECG) signal remotely. ECG is a physiological signal produced by electrical activity of heart; it can be recorded using electrocardiograph device and used to detect many heart problems, such as heart attacks. Data generated by ECG's device are sent over M2M platform, that is OpenMTC for further processing in devices that are on the client side.","PeriodicalId":290924,"journal":{"name":"38th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks - Workshops","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122959777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Encouraging people to cycle and use other forms of alternate transportation is one important aspect of addressing these problems. However, many city councils face significant difficulties in educating citizens and encouraging them to form new habits around these alternate forms of transport. Mobile devices present a great opportunity to effect such positive behavior change. In this paper we discuss the results of a survey aimed at understanding how mobile devices can be used to encourage cycling and/or improve the cycling experience. We use the results of the survey to design and develop a mobile app called SocialCycle, which purpose is to encourage users to start cycling and to increase the number of trips that existing riders take by bicycle.","PeriodicalId":290924,"journal":{"name":"38th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks - Workshops","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122125456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While live data is massively becoming available, turning it into meaningful information that is not only actionable for decision makers, but also can be leveraged as a behavioral service property, or even reused across services, is a challenge that demands a systematic approach. In this paper we propose such systematic approach, towards establishing an Internet of Things service platform architecture that leverages real-world knowledge for faster service creation and more efficient execution. Illustrated by example scenarios, we go further beyond this, proposing a method to systematically leverage machine learning techniques for revising, improving or ultimately semi-automatically extending this real-world knowledge `in-situ', i.e. during system operation, leveraging real-world observation in-context of requested service execution.","PeriodicalId":290924,"journal":{"name":"38th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks - Workshops","volume":"175 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131808206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This brief review looks at changes over the past 12 months in the regulation of handling of personal information through new or amended privacy law. Our observations are that there is an increasing recognition of privacy in the regulatory environment. Indeed, countries that have had privacy law for some time are updating their laws while countries that had not previously considered privacy law now have it in place. Australia, Korea and the EU are examples of the former described in this paper; Singapore, the Philippines and China are examples of the latter.","PeriodicalId":290924,"journal":{"name":"38th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks - Workshops","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130829727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the case of link failures occur due to interference or node mobility, these protocols will try to reroute. When no alternative route is found, packets will be dropped as a result. As a way to improve the packet delivery ratio, these protocols can be extended to support the store-carry-forward features. We propose a hybrid approach to enable dynamic switching between mode of communication according to the link conditions. This is different from other existing solutions where the switching occur only when the end-to-end route fails, and packets will be delivered using another communication mode for the rest of the routing path. In this paper, we present the implementation of incorporating the dynamic switching into two routing protocols (AODV and OLSR) and conduct a performance study for the two hybrid protocols in a number of simulation based scenarios.","PeriodicalId":290924,"journal":{"name":"38th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks - Workshops","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114792407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
