Music technology is a key component in most approaches that integrate STEM with Music. The connecting of multiple content areas through the arts, or music, can be used to increase teacher collaboration. The key areas of arts integration, STEM, STEAM, and how these can effectively and authentically exist together in the classroom to increase student engagement and connections to the content areas and concepts, are defined through a research-based and pragmatic approach. Each component is placed and developed in a particular way to achieve efficiency in the reading and executing of the overall instructional plan. These components consist of Lesson Title, Duration, Lesson Description, Listing Integration of Contents, Cognitive Demand Using Bloom’s Taxonomy, Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences, 21st-Century Skills, Content Standards and Arts Standards: Assessed vs. Addressed, Key Vocabulary, Arts Concepts Based on the National Core Arts Standards, Materials, Essential Questions, Lesson Sequence and Corresponding Assessments, Summary Activity, Extension Activity, and Adaptations for Grade-Level Bands (K–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12). Instructional plans consist of planning necessities, standard alignment, alignment to philosophies approached in earlier chapters, as well as instructional procedures and assessments. Adaptations for other grade-level bands as well as potential extensions are available for each plan. This chapter includes the following instructional plans: Shapes of Electric Guitars, Sound Amplification and Speaker Building, and Measuring Length and Pitch. In Shapes of Electric Guitars, students will design guitar bodies and perform on them using available technology. In Sound Amplification, students will analyze and experiment with sound waves, eventually building their own small speaker. Each set of standards explained provides another way that educators may find direct connections between content areas. During Invent an Instrument Using Recycled Materials, students will design and build an instrument that they can use in performance. In Composing Using Light: Musical Automata, students will use the concepts of transferring energy and photosensitive circuits to compose a piece of music.
