Al principio se ha realizado un repaso rápido del nacimiento y el desarrollo del pensamiento fonético y fonológico árabe, que empezó con las obras de al-Jalîl Ibn Ah:mad (175-791) y su seguidor Sibawâyh (177-793) y alcanzó su auge con Ibn Djinnî (392-1002) en su obra maestra Sir S:ina`ah al-I`râb.
