In this paper, we propose to use two different criteria for chip separation and serration along with the Johnson-Cook damage model. The threshold value for chip separation is determined from machining experiments using the methodologies discussed in Patel et al. [1]. In addition, two separate damage evolution laws for chip separation and serration are used. Our results indicate that the choice of the evolution law and the threshold values of Gc used for chip separation and serration have a significant effect on chip shape and other field variables such as the equivalent plastic strain, cutting force, temperature, etc.","PeriodicalId":290562,"journal":{"name":"Volume 2: Materials; Joint MSEC-NAMRC-Manufacturing USA","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127224281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An analytical model to predict the contamination during multiple recycling steps of this packaging is proposed. This model shows that lower contents of non-PET materials should be achieved to promote a valid recycling chain. A possible solution is using nano-technologies because of the very small amount of added material. Results are shown in the case of PVD coatings with aluminum target, and PET nano-composites. In both cases, less than 0.1 wt% of aluminum is able to reduce the oxygen transmission ratio of the PET packaging down to 50% of the virgin PET sheet.","PeriodicalId":290562,"journal":{"name":"Volume 2: Materials; Joint MSEC-NAMRC-Manufacturing USA","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127792304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Additive manufacturing such as selective laser melting (SLM) brings the advantages of low material waste, high flexibility, and short production lead cycle. In this study, graphene nano-platelets (GNPs) reinforced Inconel 718 composites are fabricated by SLM technique and processed under various post heat treatment schemes. It is found that fabrication of GNPs reinforced MMC using SLM technique is a viable approach. The obtained composite possesses dense microstructure and enhanced tensile strength. Post heat treatments at two levels of solution temperature (980 and 1220°C) for 1 hour followed by two-step aging are carried out. The experiment results indicate that addition of GNPs into Inconel 718 matrix results in significant strength improvement. At as-built condition, the ultimate tensile strengths are 997 and 1447 MPa, respectively at 0 and 4.4vol.% GNP content. Moreover, under as-built and solution treated condition, high content of GNPs results in overall higher UTS value and the strengthening effect is most significant at as-built condition. Meanwhile, γ′ and γ″ precipitation hardening is suppressed in the GNPs reinforced composite under aged condition due to the formation of MC carbide and depletion of Nb. Incorporating GNPs in Inconel 718 effectively inhibits the grain growth during post heat treatment.","PeriodicalId":290562,"journal":{"name":"Volume 2: Materials; Joint MSEC-NAMRC-Manufacturing USA","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126705610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Voxel-based CAM is a recent approach to toolpath planning that enables creation of paths for parts that would be difficult to create with traditional CAM software. However, the use of voxel-based CAM necessitates the presence of powerful hardware (specifically, graphics processing units) in order to perform the necessary computations for creating toolpaths. The concepts of virtualization and desktop-as-a-service offer a promising solution to this challenge, as they allow for many users to access computer hardware that is hosted on a single server. This work investigates the performance impact caused by multiple simultaneous users on voxel-based CAM deployed in a virtualized environment. The implementation of a Python application for multi-user simulation on the virtualized platform is described and timing results gathered from a sequence of simulations are presented and analyzed as the number of users is varied. The results from these simulations demonstrate consistent operational times for a low number of simultaneous users before a period of high performance variation due to resource sharing.","PeriodicalId":290562,"journal":{"name":"Volume 2: Materials; Joint MSEC-NAMRC-Manufacturing USA","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133992858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, the electrohydrodynamic approach was used to prepare poly(vinylidene fluoride)/polyaniline composite film. Scanning electron microscopic analysis was performed to show the morphology of the film on soft tissue paper. Self-poling of the film was found due to the high voltage application in the electrohydrodynamic process. The addition of polyaniline into PVDF improves the conductivity of the film significantly. Mechanoelectrical response of the film was demonstrated by measuring the open circuit voltage of the specimens under bending. The peak voltage generated is over 1.2 V due to the bending deformation of the film. The film has ultrafast response to the deformation. It is concluded that the film has multiple functions for mechanoelectrical energy conversion, vibration sensing, and structural integrity monitoring applications.","PeriodicalId":290562,"journal":{"name":"Volume 2: Materials; Joint MSEC-NAMRC-Manufacturing USA","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133583175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Further, ongoing research and investment, necessitates analytical analysis to help inform the roadmap of SiC technologies. In this work, we use in-plane biaxial test (cruciform) to measure the macro- and microstructure-scale mechanical behavior of a 6061-T6 aluminum alloy at various strain paths. We report flow curves, forming and fracture limits as examples to the macromechanical behavior. As an alternative to the tensile test, it is possible to plot flow curves up to larger strains with the cruciform test. Samples also deform uniformly during the cruciform test and do not develop instabilities in the form of local necks. This allows accurate measurements of forming, and especially fracture limits, under a preset and constant strain ratio. The micromechanical behavior, on the other hand, is quite heterogeneous and microstructure sensitive. Strain localizations at the microstructure scale cause large deviations from the global deformation strains and control the ultimate sample failure at the global scale.","PeriodicalId":290562,"journal":{"name":"Volume 2: Materials; Joint MSEC-NAMRC-Manufacturing USA","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114071890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve quality joints and enhance the welding process robustness, an improved understanding of the joint formation is highly desirable. In this paper, USW of 4-layered Ni-coated Cu is studied to investigate the joint formation at a single interface and joint propagation from interface to interface under both ambient and preheated conditions. The results indicate that joint formation involves three major mechanisms: Ni-Ni bonding with minimal mechanical interlocking, Ni-Ni bonding with moderate mechanical interlocking, and a combination of Ni-Ni bonding, Cu-Cu bonding, and severe mechanical interlocking. Results also show that joints propagate from the interface close to the sonotrode side to that close to the anvil side. It is further observed that the joint formation can be accelerated and the joint strength can be improved with process preheating, especially at the interface closest to the anvil. The effect of preheating is most significant during the early stage of the process, and diminishes as process progresses. The favorable effects of preheating improve the robustness of multi-layered USW.","PeriodicalId":290562,"journal":{"name":"Volume 2: Materials; Joint MSEC-NAMRC-Manufacturing USA","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114818478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Penetration of pin into the steel substrate, which is placed below the aluminium, has an influencing role in achieving a good weld. Beyond a certain depth of penetration of pin into the steel, non-uniform thicker intermetallic compound and the weld defects have been found. Defects were found to be located in the stir zone. Thus, an excessive penetrations of the pin into the steel matrix has been produced a detrimental effect to the weld strength. An optimum penetration of pin has been experimentally found out.","PeriodicalId":290562,"journal":{"name":"Volume 2: Materials; Joint MSEC-NAMRC-Manufacturing USA","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121722798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
