While the ability of haptic stimuli to augment such illusions has been investigated, the self-motion illusions which primarily are induced by stimulation of the haptic modality remain relatively unexplored. In this paper, we present an experiment performed with the intention of investigating whether it is possible to use haptic stimulation of the main supporting areas of the feet to induce vertical illusory self-motion on behalf of unrestrained participants during exposure to a virtual environment depicting an elevator. The experiment was based on a within-subjects design where all participants were subjected to identical visual and auditory stimuli. The participants experienced a total of four conditions. For three of the conditions a different signal was used to generate the haptic feedback while the final condition included no haptic feedback. Analysis of self-reports were used to assess the participants' experience of illusory self-motion. The results indicate that such illusions are indeed possible. Significant differences were found between the condition including no haptic feedback and the remaining three conditions.","PeriodicalId":289583,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE VR Workshop on Perceptual Illusions in Virtual Environments","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124978023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But exploiting the haptic channel with a force-feedback device can be problematic when the profile of the forces to be conveyed to the user is inherently nonlinear. As application domain we are interested in learning relativity. Specifically, we focused our interest in studying the evolution of the kinetic energy of an object approaching the speed of the light. Indeed, the divergent value of momentum for a fast moving object is a difficult concept to understand for students in theoretical physics. In this didactic context, we propose to use a spring launcher based visuohaptic metaphor to allows a user to i) intuitively set the speed of objects in a relativistic framework and ii) access to the law beside the momentum value through this interactive experience. In this context, we imply that a user could interpret and remember an abstract mathematical concept by experiencing it in a VR simulation without having any knowledge and experience neither with haptic rendering nor with special relativity knowledge. In this paper, the contribution of visuo-haptic illusion and pseudo-haptic techniques is analysed with respect to a standard visual-haptic coupling. After formulating the laws of haptic control for this specific problem, a first evaluation is presented with preliminary results. These first results highlight the effectiveness of pseudo-haptic rendering technique used for the interaction design with a complex force profiles and its interpretation taking into account a didactic goal.","PeriodicalId":289583,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE VR Workshop on Perceptual Illusions in Virtual Environments","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124353499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the mid 90's, virtual reality (VR) research has produced a rich knowledge of how design and interaction features of VEs affect presence. However, to our knowledge almost all of the previous research studies have been conducted only with healthy persons. Thus, it is not known how these factors affect the presence of mobility impaired persons, which could have implications for VR-based rehabilitation. To begin investigating this, we replicated a classic VR experiment that has been replicated many times before, but we ran the study with a different population: 10 persons with mobility impairments caused by MS and another 5 healthy persons of similar demographics (e.g., age) as our MS population. This paper compares how these two groups experience presence and discusses the differences we found in our study.","PeriodicalId":289583,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE VR Workshop on Perceptual Illusions in Virtual Environments","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116674352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Iiron a realistic viewing condition the perspective applied for rendering should account for the observer's viewpoint relative to the image. As a result, an observer may not be able to distinguish between a rendering of a VE on a computer screen and a view “through” the screen at an identical real-world scene. Little effort has been made to identify perspective projections which cause human observers to judge them to be realistic. In this paper we analyze observers' awareness of perspective distortions of virtual objects displayed on a monoscopic computer screen. These distortions warp the virtual object and make it differ significantly from how the object would look in reality. We describe psychophysical experiments that explore the subject's ability to discriminate between different perspective projections and identify projections that most closely match an equivalent real scene. Our results confirm that the field of view used for perspective rendering should match the actual visual angle of the display to provide users with a realistic view. However, we found that slight changes of the field of view in the range of 10-20% for our test environment did not cause a distorted mental image of the observed scene.","PeriodicalId":289583,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE VR Workshop on Perceptual Illusions in Virtual Environments","volume":"17 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123271057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present a novel method for adaptively determining an appropriate mapping from a linear path in a larger virtual environment into a curved path in a smaller tracked space that simultaneously integrates the use of both rotational and translational offsets. We evaluate the method using a software simulator that redirects a user walking on random paths between 16 randomly selected target locations in a virtual environment that is twice as wide as the available tracked space. We find that our controller has a 77% success rate using an average rotational offset of 0.5 degrees per step and an average translational gain of 1.5.","PeriodicalId":289583,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE VR Workshop on Perceptual Illusions in Virtual Environments","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127840130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We report on a project in which we have tried to take a more planned approach to system design based on recent achievements in the field of pseudo-haptics. We decided on an object deformation scenario that combines simple haptic and tactile stimuli with a modulated visual action feedback. Modulation is performed first, in terms of variations of the control-to-display ratio of the perceived finger position on the tabletop device as soon as the finger is entering the space occupied by a deformable virtual object. We secondly exploited a modulation in the tactile domain when the finger is being attracted by a piece of rubber placed onto the tabletop's surface. This is meant to convey the sensation of a growing contact region and an increased contact pressure as the virtual object is being deformed. An informal user trial suggests that we are on a good way, but a formal evaluation is still to be done.","PeriodicalId":289583,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE VR Workshop on Perceptual Illusions in Virtual Environments","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125647986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, these techniques have been found to be applicable to eliciting “out of the body” experiences as well (e.g. through user-held physical objects). We first introduce experiments carried out to validate the same phenomena for virtual objects. In addition, we discuss the possibility of applying them to build a less cumbersome feedback device with a reduced number of vibrators, and interact with dynamic virtual and augmented objects.","PeriodicalId":289583,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE VR Workshop on Perceptual Illusions in Virtual Environments","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117331804","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
