From the fact that features provide a common ground to all stakeholders, we derive a hypothesis that changes can be effectively managed in a feature-oriented manner. Assuming that the hypothesis holds, we argue that feature-oriented software evolution relying on automatic traceability, analyses, and recommendations reduces existing challenges in understanding and managing evolution. We illustrate these ideas using an automotive example and raise research questions for the community.","PeriodicalId":288292,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126987305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As initiator and organizer of this initiative Ø. Haugen will talk about what CVL is, what the language status is, and what will happen next. He will argue why CVL will be fruitful rather than adding to everybody's frustration and confusion. Central to this discussion is the role of standardization in achieving common understanding and tool interoperability. The talk will discuss how researchers can contribute to progress as well as impact in this field. Problems and challenges will be highlighted and hopefully discussions initiated. Information about CVL can be found at http://variabilitymodeling.org where e.g. the CVL Revised Submission having been submitted for OMG standardization is available.","PeriodicalId":288292,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126822158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such an issue is essential for the success of software product line (SPL) adoption strategies. Although it is a well-discussed subject in the SPL community, there is a lack of tool support for environments that handle UML-based SPL variabilities, as several variability management approaches take UML as a basis, specially its profiling mechanism. Such environments might handle variabilities for several reasons, such as, evaluating SPLs, defining and applying metrics based on a SPL modeling, and automating the product generation. Therefore, this paper presents the SMartyParser, a parser for processing UML-based SPL models. Such models can be obtained, in the XMI format, from every UML specification-compliant tool. Such a parser provides several services to make it easier the handling of variability data in a particular SPL environment/tool. SMartyParser was built by taking the Open Core framework as a basis for processing XMI files. A parser use example is presented by taking into account the SPL Arcade Game Maker UML models.","PeriodicalId":288292,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"552 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131513017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of researches on feature-oriented software development attempt to derive program code directly from a feature model, which presents several problems: there is no explicit attempt to embed required quality attributes into code; and features tend to cut across program units and it is difficult to derive program units from the features. To address these problems, a design-feature-based approach is proposed in this paper. Design feature model captures implementation-level design decisions explicitly. It bridges the abstraction gap between features (i.e., functionalities in abstraction) and program units (i.e., concrete implementation). Design features of a design feature model are identified based on required quality attributes. We demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed approach by providing a case study of an arcade game software product line. Initial lessons learned and research agenda are also introduced in the paper.","PeriodicalId":288292,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"237 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124248495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With dependent feature models (DFMs), we apply separation of concerns to feature models for two main benefits. First, we can modularize feature models into parts relevant to groups of stakeholders. Second, we are able to model dependencies between different software product lines in a multi-product-line scenario. To ensure consistency and correctness of DFMs, we have to apply analyses, such as dead-feature detection. We discuss why DFMs challenge the detection of inconsistencies, present how to reuse existing analyses for DFMs, and propose new analyses to supplement existing ones. We apply automated analyses in five steps and evaluate the approach using DFMs specified in VELVET by our prototype VeAnalyzer.","PeriodicalId":288292,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117309852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, little is known about the actual use of these techniques. While dozens of experience reports on software product line engineering exist, only very few focus on variability modeling. This lack of empirical data threatens the validity of existing techniques, and hinders their improvement. As part of our effort to improve empirical understanding of variability modeling, we present the results of a survey questionnaire distributed to industrial practitioners. These results provide insights into application scenarios and perceived benefits of variability modeling, the notations and tools used, the scale of industrial models, and experienced challenges and mitigation strategies.","PeriodicalId":288292,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128584386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These SPLs may be developed applying different domain analysis processes, but are likely not disjoint. Cross product line analysis aims to examine the common and variable aspects of different SPLs for improving maintenance and future development of related SPLs. Currently different SPL artifacts, or more accurately feature models, are compared, matched, and merged for supporting scalability, increasing modularity and reuse, synchronizing feature model versions, and modeling multiple SPLs for software supply chains. However, in all these cases the focus is on creating valid merged models from the input feature models. Furthermore, the terminology used in all the input feature models is assumed to be the same, namely similar features are named the same. As a result these methods cannot be simply applied to feature models that represent different SPLs. In this work we offer adapting similarity metrics and text clustering techniques in order to enable cross product line analysis. This way analysis of feature models that use different terminologies in the same domain can be done in order to improve the management of the involved SPLs. Preliminary results reveal that the suggested method helps systematically analyze the commonality and variability between related SPLs, potentially suggesting improvements to existing SPLs and to the maintenance of sets of SPLs.","PeriodicalId":288292,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130850086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In essence, FMs aim to define a set of valid combinations of features, also called configurations. In this paper, we tackle the problem of synthesising an FM from a set of configurations. The main challenge is that numerous candidate FMs can be extracted from the same input configurations, yet only a few of them are meaningful and maintainable. We first characterise the different meanings of FMs and identify the key properties allowing to discriminate between them. We then develop a generic synthesis procedure capable of restituting the intended meanings of FMs based on inferred or user-specified knowledge. Using tool support, we show how the integration of knowledge into FM synthesis can be realized in different practical application scenarios that involve reverse engineering and maintaining FMs.","PeriodicalId":288292,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122615556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the process of selecting alternatives from dimensions was relegated to an external operation. The lack of a syntactic form for selection precludes many interesting variation and reuse patterns, such as nested product lines, and theoretical results, such as a syntactic description of the configuration process. In this paper we add a selection operation to the choice calculus and illustrate how that increases the expressiveness of the calculus. We investigate some alternative semantics of this operation and study their impact and utility. Specifically, we will examine selection in the context of static and dynamically scoped dimension declarations, as a well as a linear and comprehensive form of dimension elimination. We also present a design for a type system to ensure configuration safety and modularity of nested product lines.","PeriodicalId":288292,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131354505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Examples are the SECOs surrounding Eclipse or Android. Due to independent release cycles of the multiple vendors for platform and extensions, SECOs are evolving frequently. This makes it hard to get a concise impression of the structure of a SECO and its variable artifacts during a given period of time. We contribute a metamodel to capture the variability in an arbitrary SECO and its evolution based on the notion of real time. We further present a procedure to create temporal perspectives on the SECO. Additionally, we provide means to analyze evolution of variability in between explicit releases of the platform, e.g., in accordance with the different release cycles of individual extensions. We demonstrate feasibility of our approach by modeling a part of the Eclipse SECO over a period of three years.","PeriodicalId":288292,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"131 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128598665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
