The most difficult control problems of the systems, caused by mechanical resonances, are solved by the use of a robust velocity feedback controller in the inner loop of the cascaded control structure. The resulting velocity controller and the outer loop position controller are used in combination with auto-tuning feedforward controller to assure consistent and high tracking performance of the motion system with good stability, robustness, disturbance rejection and sensor noise suppression. In case the acoustic resonance should happen, the variation in the lamp voltage is detected and then the operating frequency is changed step by step until a frequency with stable operation is located. In cooperating with the detection circuit, the control strategy is implemented on an electronic ballast with the half-bridge class-D load-resonant inverter. The ETO has high switching speed, snubberless turn-off capability and low conduction loss. When ETO is conducting current, the total current will go through the integrated MOSFET. In this situation, the MOSFET acts as a small linear resistor whose voltage drop reflects the current through it. This paper discusses a method to measure the current and transfer the current information to a PWM signal whose duty cycle is proportional to the current value. The frequency of the PWM signal is also changed according to the MOSFET's junction temperature. In this way the temperature effect on the MOSFET's on-resistance is eliminated. The sensed current information is sent out through an optical fiber. So it is very easy to be received and used for control purpose. The sensed current information is also used for the built-in over-current protection purpose. The ETO's built-in current sensor, fast turn-off speed, and high current turn-off capability enable the ETO to shut down the fault current very fast in the over-current fault situation. The experimental results show that the error of ETO built-in current sensor is less than 1%. Current harmonics due to input LC filter resonance is one of main sources that deteriorates current THD. Suppressing resonant current by additional damping resistor is a simple solution but power loss is not negligible in high power range. This paper proposes an input harmonic damping circuit utilizing voltage clamp circuit of MC system. Since the proposed damping filter compensates mainly resonant current ripple, much smaller current rating devices are needed to achieve harmonics damping control than main MC power circuit. Specifically, the effects of the speed-controller bandwidth (of the PMSM drive) in detecting these faults are examined. For instance, it is shown that the fault harmonics in the calculated electromagnetic torque waveform can be used to distinguish between a rotor fault and a varying load torque phenomenon. It is further shown that, depending on the value of speed-controller bandwidth, the fault harmonic information may be mostly in the stator current, mostly in the voltage, or distributed between both. In particular, conventional linear estimators are not adaptive to variations of the operating point. The sliding mode technique has shown promising results when estimating or controlling nonlinear systems. This paper presents a sliding mode observer (SMO) for estimating the position and speed of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) to achieve sensorless drive system. The technique can be generalized to other motor drives and motion control systems. The effects of the variation of motor parameters such as stator resistance and stator inductance on the position and/or speed estimations, over a wide speed range, have been studied. Compared to other methods, the observer is more robust to parameter detuning. A circuit model for single-layer planar, spiral inductor is presented. Expressions to compute each element in this model are described. Estimates of performance from these expressions and from the simulation results using a field solver is compared to validate the circuit model of the single-layer spiral. Selection of the geometric parameters of the spiral, based on the simulation results, is discussed. Further, the single-layer circuit model is extended to model the multilayer spiral inductor by using valid approximations. Feasibility of multi-layer spiral inductor is discussed. Sub micron mixed signal ASIC technology in the lighting business is already state-of-the-art. This technology offers a lot of advantages like high complexity on small silicon area. This paper presents an novel nondimming ballast control IC with integrated digital power factor correction. The IC is fabricated in state-of-the-art 0.35 /spl mu/m standard CMOS process and fits into a SOIC20 package. The IC supports the classical ballast topology with a preconverter-stage, i.e. a boost type topology, and as a DC-AC-converter the classical half-bridge. The ASIC provides all the required features to drive and control the different families of fluorescent lamps like linear and compact lamps.
