Terrorism remains an active research topic with respect to economic consequences; such that increase in terrorism causes political instability, which gives a poor economic outlook, hence investors tend to shift their money out of the victimized country. Furthermore, this study has explored the distinct impacts of domestic and transnational terrorism simultaneously for capital flight. Moreover, this study has discovered the role of military expenditure as a policy variable to combat terrorism. Besides this, the study also highlights the prominence of institutional quality because the effectiveness of government institutions plays a significant role to ameliorate the uncertainty arising due to terrorism and hence cause a reduction in capital flight. Panel data comprising of 9 Asian and 5 Mena countries from 2006 to have been used in this study. Generalized Method of Moment for empirical testing has been applied to address the issue of capital flight trap and endogeneity among variables. Findings reveal that both dimensions of terrorism have a significant impact on capital flight.","PeriodicalId":286621,"journal":{"name":"NICE Research Journal","volume":"579 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134140003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this perspective the current article gauge the importance of Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement under World Trade Organisation (WTO) in increasing a Latin American & Caribbean (LAC) developing economy’s appeal for investors from abroad. Infrastructure and skilled labour availability, market size, macroeconomic stability, economic development, and trade liberalization are also considered. Time-invariant phenomena such as access to the sea, regional affiliations/proximities, income groupings and ability to speak one of the international languages, though desirable were not done because fixed effect panel estimation technique does not permit the use of dummy variables. Due to the 2008-2009 recession in the developed economies, the available investment funds withered, making the investors’ sceptic apropos the safety of their tangible and intangible property, especially in the developing world, causing a decrease in FDI to these nations in general. However, LAC countries were somewhat resilient and received a steadily increasing flow of foreign investment. Thus, it demands to analyse the factors that overcame the overseas investors’ scepticism and prompted them to invest in the LAC region. By utilizing annual data for 28 years that is 1989-2016 from 24 LAC developing nations it is found that infrastructure and human capital availability, macroeconomic stability, economic development, strengthening and worldwide harmonization of intellectual property right standards through TRIPS positively effects the overseas investor's investment decision. The host population used to measure market size is found to be insignificant when tested with other conventional FDI location pull factors. Similarly, liberalization, consistent with horizontal FDI theory, exerts a significant negative effect on inward FDI.","PeriodicalId":286621,"journal":{"name":"NICE Research Journal","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123874748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, corporate cash holding has gained critical attention due to the dynamic business environment. Both practitioners and academicians have focused on the firms’ cash holding decisions in the recent era. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of corporate governance on cash holding and to check the role of product market competition on corporate governance and cash holding relationship. The research investigated that whether product market competition plays substitution role for corporate governance in a relationship with cash holding. Substitution effect argument claims that external market discipline is enough to resolve agency problem between managers and shareholders even firm level governance is weak. For this study, unbalanced panel data of 196 companies from the year 2006 to 2014 is selected. All models include time dummies and industry fixed effect with standard error cluster to the firm. The results show that corporate governance has a significant negative effect on corporate cash holding which supports flexibility hypotheses. Moreover, product market competition has substitution role for corporate governance in relationship with corporate cash holding.","PeriodicalId":286621,"journal":{"name":"NICE Research Journal","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130865662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The recent literature indicates that debt can discipline managers to work efficiently in the interest of the firm. Thus low leverage can proxy for good governance. Since Islamic firms are low on debt, thus we may extend that Islamic label can proxy for good governance. To test our hypothesis, we obtained data from 231 nonfinancial firms listed on Pakistan stock exchange out of which 53 were declared as sharia-compliant. The results indicate that the Islamic label has a positive significant impact on a firm’s governance quality and Islamic label can proxy for good governance. This study aims to form a nexus between Islamic label, leverage, and governance on which there is little or no literature. It will also be important for investors and managers of Islamic funds who have little or no research support about the governance aspect of Islamic firms.","PeriodicalId":286621,"journal":{"name":"NICE Research Journal","volume":"82 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123237924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A sample of 100 firms is drawn from non-financial companies listed on Pakistan Stock Exchange from 2009 to 2015. Corporate governance mechanisms often pave the way for the expropriation of minority shareholders at the hands of controlling shareholders and also support to hide their professional misconduct via conservative accounting reports. Multivariate panel data regression analysis is employed as the estimation procedure. The results show that some corporate governance mechanisms are related to accounting conservatism. This study reports an empirical evidence of a positive association between institutional shareholding and accounting conservatism as well as the negative association between board size, CEO duality, managerial ownership and accounting conservatism in case of listed firms in Pakistan. However, some corporate governance attributes that were not previously examined in Pakistan like CEO turnover, and gender diversity on board is found to have no significant impact on accounting conservatism. The results suggest that users of financial statements should consider the corporate governance mechanisms while evaluating non-financial listed in a country like Pakistan where corporate governance is undergoing an evolutionary process and numerous family-controlled firms exist.","PeriodicalId":286621,"journal":{"name":"NICE Research Journal","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124165004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to investigate the main effects of organizational cynicism on job stress and employee performance. This study also examined the mediating role of work alienation a mechanism through which organizational cynicism affects different employee negative as well as positive outcomes. This study is based on the well-known theory of Cognitive appraisal theory of stress (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) to justify the relationship of the proposed research model. The study collected data from the employee (n=350) working in the manufacturing and service sector of Pakistan. A Cross-sectional time lag research design was used for data collection in this study. The finding revealed that organizational cynicism is positively related to job stress and negatively related to job performance. Complete support was found for all hypotheses. Moreover, the findings further demonstrated that work alienation mediated the relationship between organizational cynicism and work outcomes. Support was found for all direct and indirect mediation effects.","PeriodicalId":286621,"journal":{"name":"NICE Research Journal","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123570284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
