Electronic Control Units (ECUs) use numerous sensors spread across various sub-systems to perform a variety of functions such as stability control, adaptive cruise control, power train control, autonomous driving, etc. The accuracy of sensors degrades over the vehicle lifetime. The control logic of vehicles uses sensor measurements to detect the vehicle state and give appropriate commands to control the vehicle. Faults in sensors cause wrong feedback to be sent to the control logic and subsequently commands given by the control logic become faulty. Thus the effect of a sensor fault can be observed in subsystems controlled by the control logic. So advanced diagnosis techniques are required to detect the sensor degradation. In this work, a comparison is made between two different automotive sensor health monitoring methods used to diagnose sensor faults. The methods that are compared are: lookup table based method and machine learning (using multiple linear regression) based method. The comparison will enable one to choose the appropriate method by considering the attributes required for a particular application like accuracy, amount of computation required, simplicity, etc. Sensor faults are detected by comparing the current sensor output with a nominal no-fault sensor block output at the particular operating point of the system. The lookup table method was implemented in Matlab while the machine learning method was implemented using R programming language. The proposed methods are illustrated on the case example of motor fault in a Hybrid Electric Vehicle to analyze their efficacy. They have been found to be valid for all drive cycles and can be used for diagnosing sensor faults in real time.","PeriodicalId":286356,"journal":{"name":"2016 Indian Control Conference (ICC)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114306754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Contaminant intrusion into WDNs could potentially affect a large cross-section of the population. Deliberate intrusion is the most serious threat to a WDN and can result in chemical and/or biological substances spreading throughout the WDN causing serious consequences. A contamination warning system needs to be installed in a WDN through sensors to detect the presence of contaminants as early as possible in order to protect the public from exposure. In this work, we develop algorithms for sensor network design for contamination detection and identification for a specific level of service using observability and identifiability concepts. We also estimate the total population exposed to the intrusion before detection and identification of contaminants is realized. The proposed methodologies are illustrated on a fairly large-scale network.","PeriodicalId":286356,"journal":{"name":"2016 Indian Control Conference (ICC)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128127456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Biodiesel production is based on transesterification reaction between a vegetable oil containing triglycerides and a shorter chain alcohol e.g. methanol. A batch transesterification process needs tighter control on reaction temperature for achieving higher triglyceride conversion. Here, open loop control called optimal control has been employed on the transesterification kinetic model of a batch process. A multi-objective optimization problem is formulated with two objectives namely, maximization of methyl ester concentration at batch end time and minimization of final batch time. An e-constraint approach is adopted for solving the multi-objective optimization problem. Orthogonal collocation on finite elements scheme is employed to generate the optimal temperature trajectory. Under the framework of collocation method, state and control profiles have been discretized using piecewise linear Lagrange's polynomials and the control problem has got transformed into an NLP problem. fmincon solver is utilized in solving the NLP in MATLAB®. Maximum methyl ester concentration at final batch time and the minimum batch end time have been determined to be 0.8315 mol/l and 67.4 min, respectively. Optimal results have been found with two finite elements and five interior collocation points.","PeriodicalId":286356,"journal":{"name":"2016 Indian Control Conference (ICC)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126223194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a treatment that effectively manages the tremor symptoms in Parkinson's disease. Despite being a successful treatment option, its underlying principle and the mechanism by which it attenuates tremors is not yet fully understood. Since existing methods for tuning DBS parameters are largely trial and error approaches, understanding how DBS works can help reduce time and costs. Further, understanding how DBS works may also help in understanding the mechanism by which the tremors are caused in the first place, which still remains a contested issue. Understanding these mechanisms ultimately could lead to accurate diagnosis tools and better treatment strategies for Parkinson's disease. In this paper, we set out to analyse how a high-frequency stimulation signal in the brain in DBS can help control the low-frequency rest tremors observed in Parkinson's patients. With a simplistic feedback loop framework that captures the key elements in the sensorimotor loop (the feedback loop consisting of sensory functions and motor functions) in humans, we draw key insights into the mechanism by which the high-frequency stimulation signal can help reduce the `equivalent gain' of the low-frequency tremor component and thus help attenuate the tremors. We verify these observations with numerical examples and a bench top experimental example, and close with a few concluding remarks.","PeriodicalId":286356,"journal":{"name":"2016 Indian Control Conference (ICC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128664276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The reference profiles are generated off-line using constrained optimization techniques to take care of all possible variations in initial conditions and path constraints. Lateral and longitudinal guidance commands are generated in-flight with the help of stored reference profiles to meet the boundary conditions. Non-linear dynamic inversion is used to design inner loop control. Unpredicted failures like control surface saturations, aerodynamic uncertainties, chattering of control surfaces are addressed by the bandwidth adaptation logic. The integration of the guidance and control loop is achieved by a feedback from control to guidance section, thereby making the guidance loop adaptive to changes in the control bandwidth. In this way, the guidance subsystem generates feasible trajectories that ensure safe flight of RLV despite unpredicted scenarios. The integrated scheme is simulated extensively in 6 Degrees of freedom (DOF) environment along with non-linear actuator dynamics to validate the algorithm. Robustness of the proposed method is demonstrated using Monte Carlo simulations with various failure modes and plant parameter uncertainties.","PeriodicalId":286356,"journal":{"name":"2016 Indian Control Conference (ICC)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117187109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The performance of a rigid spacecraft to execute multi-target acquisition and tracking with four SG CMGs in pyramid configuration is studied and steering law performance evaluated. The first steering law under consideration is the classic Moore-Penrose Pseudo Inverse(MPI). Subsequently, this is modified by adding null motion using inverse gain and null projection method. Then a steering law based on Preferred Gimbal Angles (PGA) is studied. The laws are compared based on the normalized singularity measure, gimbal rates, gimbal angles, output torque, attitude performance and angular momentum demand. The gimbal motor rates are restricted owing to hardware limits. This results in torque errors which affect the attitude of the spacecraft.","PeriodicalId":286356,"journal":{"name":"2016 Indian Control Conference (ICC)","volume":"53 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120902832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the end of these maneuvers, the aircraft usually develops either a high negative flight path angle or a high negative flight path angle rate apart from a considerably low velocity. Therefore, the aircraft needs to recover from such undesired flight conditions as quickly as possible. Usually this recovery is achieved manually by the pilot. In the present paper, a novel automatic recovery strategy is proposed. Two recovery schemes - a partial recovery scheme to get back to a level flight condition quickly without worrying about velocity and a full recovery scheme to restore the initial steady level trim completely (both velocity and altitude wise) are presented. As these maneuvers are executed in high angle of attack regions, the aircraft flight dynamics becomes highly nonlinear and coupled requiring use of nonlinear control methods. In the present work, sliding mode control technique is considered as, apart from handling the nonlinearities effectively, it also provides robustness to uncertainty in the aerodynamic data. MATLAB simulation results are presented to first demonstrate the execution of the maneuvers and thereafter to validate the proposed recovery schemes.","PeriodicalId":286356,"journal":{"name":"2016 Indian Control Conference (ICC)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126745991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, these angles are required for identification of the system parameters such as aerodynamic forces and moment derivatives. For exact measurements, it is necessary to install appropriate air data sensors on board. However, it is sometime difficult to install such apparatus on small UAVs. Inertial sensor measurements, aerodynamic derivatives and equations of motions are used to determine the aerodynamic angles. In this paper, three approaches are followed to estimate airflow angles. The first concept uses navigational equations for the estimation. In the second approach, inertial sensor data has been used. Third concept uses aerodynamic derivative obtained from wind tunnel testing. Estimated angles from all three approaches are shown for simulated and flight data. Complementary filter has been used for combining estimated angles obtained using inertial measurements and aerodynamic derivative based approaches. Improved filtered angles are compared with simulated airflow angles for the same flight condition.","PeriodicalId":286356,"journal":{"name":"2016 Indian Control Conference (ICC)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127218318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
