Deployment of small, modular, autonomous to semi-autonomous submersible dredgers/ miners in these areas is expected to reduce the operational and mobilization constraints. Most of the existing submersible dredgers/ miners use tracks for locomotion on submerged ground. Legged locomotion is however favored in these natural unstructured terrains. A small, modular, walking submersible dredger/ miner is designed and a prototype is under construction. Prediction of the major design parameters of such a system requires a mathematical model integrating the processes of excavation, transportation of the excavated material and locomotion of the vehicle while moving on submerged ground. This paper gives a brief overview of the full scale tests to be performed with the prototype for validation of part of the mathematical model.","PeriodicalId":286274,"journal":{"name":"Day 2 Sat, August 07, 2004","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121894257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The measurement of the wave field around a full-scale ship in the field has only recently been undertaken. Each of these situations presents a set of constraints and issues for the instrumentation and measurement technique to deal with. This paper will discuss free-surface measurement at full and model scales, and the methods currently being used and developed at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division to measure model and full scale ship generated waves.","PeriodicalId":286274,"journal":{"name":"Day 2 Sat, August 07, 2004","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130328620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In case of nearshore and offshore oil spills, a thin oil layer has to be skimmed off from the sea surface either by self-floating oil skimming equipment or by oil spill recovery ships. In this paper, self-floating oil skimming equipment is studied and an oil spill recovery vessel appropriate for coastal waters is developed. Initially, an oil skimmer composed of oleophilic disks is investigated. This system, as is known from the various skimming applications around the world, operates by making use of the adhesive properties of oil. A prototype of this skimmer is constructed and then series of experiments are carried out to determine the parameters that can be used in the design process. Secondly, a new oil recovery system is presented which utilizes principle of suction and density differences. The system presented differs from its counterparts in that it speeds up the gravity-separation in the settling tank into which the oil-water mixture is taken with high rates of flow. An experimental model for this system is constructed and tested. The preliminary tests revealed that a system with high rates of oil recovery is possible.","PeriodicalId":286274,"journal":{"name":"Day 2 Sat, August 07, 2004","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126279803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some comparison with model scale studies is made. The paper, for the most part, concentrates on the dynamics associated with tip vortices, but also recounts, but also recounts experiences with roots and other forms of cavitation. Single, twin and triple screw situations are discussed with ship types ranging from LNG carries through container ships, cruise ships, high-speed patrol craft and small warships. The analysis of hull surface pressure signals originating from cavitation action is also discussed in relation to cavity phenomenological behavior.\u0000 With regard to observation methods, the currently available and practical techniques are discussed; semicolon comparing and contrasting the techniques and their relevance to problem-solving based on Lloyd’s Register’s full-scale experience. Additionally, a new borescope method, pioneered and developed by Lloyd’s Register, which has successfully been used in a number of full-scale investigations is also presented.","PeriodicalId":286274,"journal":{"name":"Day 2 Sat, August 07, 2004","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126514140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The control surface tested has a rectangular planform and geometric aspect ratio of 1. Results are presented for tests at a Reynolds Number of 560,000 with extensive pitot-static axial wake surveys and use of Particle Image Velocimetry, PIV, to study the behaviour of the tip vortex. PIV results are given for one axial station at 55% x/c downstream of the trailing edge. The steady results are analysed to show the size and strength of the tip vortex as a function of angle of attack. PIV results are taken at four stages in a periodic oscillation corresponding to minimum, maximum and mean angles of attack. A time dependent behaviour is clearly observed in the strength and location of the tip vortex.","PeriodicalId":286274,"journal":{"name":"Day 2 Sat, August 07, 2004","volume":"212 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123583577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, an understanding of the flow around the thrusters is of great practical interest. Despite this interest, there is lack of knowledge in the description of the hydrodynamic characteristics of thrusters wake at bollard pull and low advance coefficient values.\u0000 This work was aimed at providing detailed data about the hydrodynamic characteristics of a Dynamic Positioning (DP) thruster wake flow at different low advance coefficient values. Wake measurements were made during cavitation tunnel tests carried out on a ducted propeller model at the Italian Ship Model Basin (INSEAN), Rome, Italy. Through these experiments, the DP thruster far wake velocity components at different downstream axial planes, up to 15 diameters downstream, were obtained using a Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) system in the INSEAN cavitation tunnel. These experiments were carried out at two different advance coefficient (J) values [bollard pull (J = 0), and J = 0.4].","PeriodicalId":286274,"journal":{"name":"Day 2 Sat, August 07, 2004","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133910947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
