Furthermore, it is applied to the line in a large temporary disaster are expected to FSO. In addition, FSO can be applied as a fiber backup when the disaster occurred. However, since the light beam has high directivity in free space link, the shock and vibration due to environmental changes, will lead to large misalignment between the transmitting and receiving antennas. Therefore, their impact on the stability of the FSO communication system should be investigated. In this paper, we describe the results of the basic measurement data obtained at the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred in March 2011. We investigate the impact of the earthquake on the tracking system technology for FSO that we have developed. Furthermore, we show the effectiveness of the proposed error correction for reducing the impact of earthquakes on the communication link.","PeriodicalId":282743,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modeling (ONDM)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129200029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We compare two district cases applicable to forwarding of multi-lane Ethernet traffic: WDM and optical packet switched networks. In case of WDM, which we refer to as RND-MP, any randomly chosen set of wavelength-routed paths among all available paths can be used for parallel transmission. In the optical packet switched network, referred to as RND-OPS, we assume that paths do not need to be reserved in advance, whereby the forwarding can be hop-by-hop, following a randomly chosen free port at every optical packet switch. The analytical and simulation results are promising and show that, in a heavily loaded network, RND-OPS yields excellent results with comparably low buffer requirement. RND-MP performs better for over-provisioned networks. To the best of our knowledge this is the first analysis to addressing the problem of multipath routing in optical networks without optimizations or complex path computation algorithms.","PeriodicalId":282743,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modeling (ONDM)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126737811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In MLR WDM optical networks, an intelligent line rate selection strategy can enable cost efficient resource allocations for routing, rate and wavelength assignment problem. In this work, we propose a learning based line rate assignment strategy that reduces communication cost and bandwidth blocking ratio. Performances of three variations of the proposed strategy are compared with maximum and minimum line rate assignment strategies of the literature through simulations. Results show that performance can be improved with the proposed algorithm.","PeriodicalId":282743,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modeling (ONDM)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123858984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A fairly detailed physical layer modeling is considered in the network design algorithms. Simulations are performed on a 20 nodes network with varying traffic loads. Besides comparing the two paradigms of flexible and fixed grid networks, including both pure and hybrid modulation formats, in terms of their spectral efficiency and number of blocked requests, we show the importance of integrating a detailed physical layer modeling in the network design phase. We mostly focus on the investigation of the impact of changing physical layer design parameters such as fiber type and span length on network level performance.","PeriodicalId":282743,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modeling (ONDM)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114685828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While taking into account typical gain and noise figure profiles of erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) components, the authors consider a number of signal power control strategies and compare their performance in terms of achievable lightpath optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). These strategies are applied network-wide to concurrently control the gain of each individual amplifier and the signal power equalization at each reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM). Simulation results show that the lightpath OSNR is affected by three factors: the EDFA gain control strategy, power equalization strategy and wavelength assignment algorithm. A trade-off between lightpath average OSNR and OSNR variance across the WDM channels is also noted.","PeriodicalId":282743,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modeling (ONDM)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126514864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) has emerged as a promising technology to overcome this limitation. In this preliminary work we give an overview of current SDM technologies, covering coupled and non-coupled SDM networks, and of the possibilities and limitations they bring to the problem of Routing, Space and Spectrum Allocation (RSSA). We focus on the trade-offs between spectral efficiency and amount of transmission devices enabled by SDM technologies, presenting a number of preliminary heuristic policies to solve RSSA, and evaluating them in the context of dynamic traffic by means of simulations. We show that different heuristics can optimize different aspects of RSSA, and that one strikes a reasonable balance.","PeriodicalId":282743,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modeling (ONDM)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122271952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper uses a combination of theoretical derivations and experimental results to recommend the best set of parameters to satisfy a specific demand to be routed along the network. In particular, for a given required OSNR (which is related to reach) and desired net bit rate, and assuming a capacity-achieving FEC scheme, the paper provides the set of modulation format, symbol rate and code rate which requires the minimum bandwidth, while offering an arbitrarily low bit error rate. We observed that optimum operating points required FEC schemes with overheads ranging from almost 0 to 100%, which is an important guideline for future flexible optical communications systems.","PeriodicalId":282743,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modeling (ONDM)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126584116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, the fact that submarine fiber-optic cables are susceptible to man-made or natural disasters, such as earthquakes, is well recognized. A disaster-resilient submarine cable deployment can save cost incurred by network operators such as the capacity loss cost, the cruising cost and the repair cost of the damaged cables, in order to restore network service when a cable break is prompted by a disaster occurrence. In this work, we investigate disaster-aware submarine cable deployment problem. While selecting a path for the cables, our approach aims to minimize the total expected loss cost, considering that submarine fiber-optic cables may break because of natural disasters, subject to deployment budget, path uniqueness, regular protection, elliptic shape, and linearization constraints. In our approach, we assume disaster-unrelated failures are handled by providing a backup cable along with primary cable. We consider a scenario with two nodes located on two different lands separated by a water body (sea/ocean). We then consider an elliptic cable shape to formulate the problem, which can be extended to other cable shapes, subject to avoiding deploying cable in disaster zones. We provide an Integer Linear Programming formulation for the problem. Finally, we present illustrative numerical examples that show the potential benefit of our approach as well as conclusion and future work.","PeriodicalId":282743,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modeling (ONDM)","volume":"94 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125823500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optical network units (ONUs) own lasers under limited thermal tunability and their wavelengths have random distribution in a band. ONU and optical line terminal (OLT) architectures with coherent transceivers are proposed, providing a spectral efficiency suitable for a high capacity PON with large number of users and long-reach approach. In activation processes, ONU acceptances up to 99.99% are obtained with a DWA technique. Under standard environmental conditions, the DWA method is combined with guard bands and then ONU blocking probabilities below 0.1% and availability ratios up to 99.99% are achieved.","PeriodicalId":282743,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modeling (ONDM)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127118352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study the benefits which the sharing brings in terms of resiliency, and show that, with the appropriate placement of a few active nodes, the mean service downtime can be reduced more than threefold by providing interoperator communication to as little as one optical network unit in one hundred. The implementation of the proposed idea can be carried out in stages when needed (the pay-as-you-grow deployment), and in those parts of the network where high service availability is needed most, e.g., in a business district. While the performance should expectedly increase, we show the resiliency is brought almost out of thin air by using redundant resources of different operators. We evaluated the service availability for 87400 networks with the relative standard error of the sample mean below 1%.","PeriodicalId":282743,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modeling (ONDM)","volume":"141 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127324884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
