It narrates the concerns of Nagasaki and Hiroshima representatives who met in Tokyo to submit a proposal to reconstruct as a “peace commemoration city” and to seek a reconstruction law that recognized the “special nature” of their city's destruction. The chapter also outlines how the competition between Nagasaki and Hiroshima grew out of the postwar need for national reconstruction funds. The path of reconstruction, in both cities, was not predetermined but rather grew out of the many visions for reconstruction that emerged during the first several years after the bombing. The chapter then argues that the American occupiers and Christians envisioned the revival of Nagasaki in similar ways to municipal officials, creating what the author calls the municipal vision of reconstruction. Finally, the chapter seeks to link the city's international past to its atomic present instead of defining Nagasaki's place in history solely in terms of the bombing.","PeriodicalId":281382,"journal":{"name":"Resurrecting Nagasaki","volume":"503 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133011902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The chapter unfolds Nagai's leadership among the Urakami Catholics in three stages: first, during the Second World War; second, from 1945 to 1947 Nagai led the Catholic survivors into recovery from the atomic bombing; and third, from 1948 to 1951 Nagai acted as the representative voice for Urakami and the city more generally, by publishing prolifically. The chapter details how Nagai's writings and persona supported the municipal vision of reconstruction. It also discusses Nagai's Catholic interpretation of the atomic bombing and how it became the central motif of his postwar writings. The chapter debates that Nagai spoke for Nagasaki's atomic experience in the eyes of local, national, and international media and publishers.","PeriodicalId":281382,"journal":{"name":"Resurrecting Nagasaki","volume":"132 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127373203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It outlines the Supreme Commander for the Allied Power's (SCAP) control of the publishing industry and how the psychological warfare approach shaped the content of the material produced and published during the occupation. Many strategies of the psychological war against Japan during the Second World War continued into the occupation. The chapter then unfolds how the United States dedicated massive amounts of paper to disseminating ideas favorable to the Americans and their allies in the hopes of influencing the minds of the Japanese people. Among the tens of thousands of books published during the first five years after the war, the books by Nagai Takashi stand out as products of the policies of the Allied occupation. Ultimately, the chapter analyses the implications of the publication of Nagasaki no kane and how it illuminated the ways in which SCAP involvement in the publishing industry shaped the atomic-bombing literature and narratives about the Nagasaki bombing in general.","PeriodicalId":281382,"journal":{"name":"Resurrecting Nagasaki","volume":"280 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124486458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines the ramifications of the particular ways the narratives unfolded in Nagasaki. The story of that city's reconstruction shows the relationship between destruction, politics, religion, and memory that so often exists in societies recovering from traumatic events. The chapter also explains the reasons behind the use of “resurrecting” in the title to signify the subject and purpose of the book. Ultimately, the chapter sets out to see what happens when we shift the focus to Nagasaki, because it is surely time to write Nagasaki into the history of the atomic bombings and their aftermath.","PeriodicalId":281382,"journal":{"name":"Resurrecting Nagasaki","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123488568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It spotlights Motoshima's viewpoint in Hiroshima's memory of the war and its perpetuation of Japan's sense of victimhood and inability to confront its wartime aggression. The chapter also examines Motoshima's way of thinking, his career as a politician, and how he exemplified Nagasaki's convergence of atomic narratives. His view of the atomic bombings as an unavoidable end to Japan's war of aggression was sometimes misunderstood as a moral justification of the bombings, or even senility, especially when he played so prominent a role in Nagasaki's peace movement during his time as mayor. Ultimately, the chapter talks about the condition of Nagasaki today as a vibrant city that both champions its international past and commemorates its atomic tragedy.","PeriodicalId":281382,"journal":{"name":"Resurrecting Nagasaki","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131136167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It details the reconstruction and revival of Nagasaki and how it began with the presence and the work of the occupation forces. In the early months of the occupation, both American occupying forces and Nagasaki residents discovered in each other common humanity that had been nearly erased by the ravages of war and the waves of propaganda, not to mention the atomic bombing. The chapter illustrates how they established a foundation that helped to bring about a successful reconstruction of the city. It looks into the cultural rapprochement between the United States and Japan and the importation of new cultural activities, combined with a renewed cultivation of preexisting international phenomena, to highlight the urban identity of the city as a site of international culture. The chapter highlights how the city as a whole experienced an unprecedented amount of engagement with and influence from a foreign culture, at least in the modern age.","PeriodicalId":281382,"journal":{"name":"Resurrecting Nagasaki","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115046996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It focuses on the Urakami Cathedral ruins which loomed large in discussions of reconstruction and urban identity through the late 1950s. The chapter looks at how the ruins linked the past to the present, but, in the case of a destructive event, also ensnared the present in a contested past. For activist groups, hibakusha, and other city residents, the ruins became the center of the commemoration of the bombing and a popular symbol within their atomic narrative, providing a shorthand reference for the human trauma of the bombing. The chapter also analyses Nagasaki's approach to modernizing its landscape and Hiroshima's approach to stay frozen in the traumatic, atomic moment. Ultimately, the chapter investigates how Hiroshima cultivated a milieu de mémoire (real environment of memory) in the first decades after the bombings, whereas Nagasaki failed to preserve its only lieu de mémoire (site of memory).","PeriodicalId":281382,"journal":{"name":"Resurrecting Nagasaki","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114219414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
