Two particular features of the proposed methodology are: it is supported by a foundational ontology, and it employs a certain form of agent-based discrete event simulation for achieving more agility in the development process.","PeriodicalId":281008,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Only if its services are perceived as dependable (e.g. available, reliable, secure and safe) will the MAS be considered useful to ensure the domain specific dependability requirements, it is essential to enable the MAS to detect and react to critical states of agents. This can be done by either enabling the agent to deal with unexpected situations or by adding a fault-management component to the platform. This work presents an event-based fault-management system and presents the results of its evaluation.","PeriodicalId":281008,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Need-driven proactive information delivery has thus been widely investigated in diverse areas spanning from psychology, AI, to Web-based services. CAST, a team-oriented agent architecture, realized proactive information delivery as a built-in agent behavior, which is derived by the capability of anticipating others' information-needs based on a computational shared mental model. However, the first implementation of CAST is limited in managing the dynamic activation and deactivation of teammates' information-needs. This work addresses this issue by proposing a mechanism for organizing and managing the \"context\" of information-needs, which facilitates information-needs to be activated and deactivated dynamically. We evaluate the proposed approach by comparing its performance with agent teams using only reactive communications (e.g., ask/reply) and with the original CAST agent teams.","PeriodicalId":281008,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Such methodologies mainly focus on their abstraction ability in order to both easily manage the system complexity and easily isolate the stakeholders' requirements that affect the system architecture. On the contrary, this paper also deals with the above issues, but it pays more attention to the characterization of 'intelligent' agent capabilities. Specifically, to deliver on such a task, the paper focuses on the socially-driven approach of Tropos software design methodology in order to build up an agent-based information system prototype.","PeriodicalId":281008,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The overlay network is constructed as a hierarchical graph based on peer power which is an aggregate measure of available resources. We use index based, random walk JOIN and LEAVE protocols to build the overlay network in which node degree and workload correspond to its peer power. We also propose an index based query scheme for peers to search documents in the network. Performance studies demonstrate that the proposed self-configuration protocol and search scheme are efficient and viable. The self-configured P2P network has significantly lower query cost than traditional Gnutella-like P2P systems. We further propose a caching assisted query mechanism where query results are cached by intermediate nodes along the search path, thereby exploiting the surplus storage power of the peers and further improving query efficiency. Caching assisted query permits a quicker response to subsequent queries for popular data without incurring the excessive overhead of globally replicated directory information. Our experimental study reveals that the caching assisted query provides an additional reduction of up to 40% in messages needed per query.","PeriodicalId":281008,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The TAC SCM marketplace is characterized by the combination of quantity competition and price competition between manufacturers (agents). We specify the quantity competition by a variation of Cournot model and view the price competition as an extension of Bertrand game. An approach of smooth-regression is introduced to copy with the non-linear fluctuation of product price by using linear price model. The results of the paper provide the solutions to the decision-making problems in TAC SCM trading agent design, including daily production, product pricing and component procuring.","PeriodicalId":281008,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. This model serves two purposes. First, it provides a detailed description for our everyday notion of situation awareness. Second, it offers an alternative perspective of looking into the nature and characteristics of proactive behavior in intelligent agent systems. Most of the existing definitions of proactiveness do not possess the relevant details to encourage rigorous studies of enhancing an agent's capability to anticipate and deal with foreseeable situations. This work intends to fill this gap by suggesting a working definition of proactiveness, which place additional emphasis on its underpinning cognitive process and its role in directing an agent's attention. A brief discussion of using situation awareness as meta-level control to direct a resource-bounded agent's attention is also included.","PeriodicalId":281008,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Particularly, in a multi-agent based content sharing system, a flat, peer-to-peer (P2P) agent organization is not the most efficient organization for locating relevant agents for queries. This work develops and analyzes a hierarchical agent group formation protocol to build a hybrid organization for large-scale content sharing system as well as a content-aware distributed search algorithm to take advantage of such an organization. During the organization formation process, the agents manage their agent-view structures to form a hierarchical topology in an incremental fashion. The algorithm aims to place those agents with similar content in the same group. We evaluate the system performance based on TREC VLC 921 datasets. The results of the experiment demonstrate a significant increase in the cumulative recall ratio (CRR) measure compared to the flat agent organization and structure.","PeriodicalId":281008,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
