A high proportion of the fauna is identifiably autochthonous in origin. Four major generalizations, as to the invertebrate “values” of the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia (CERRA) World Heritage Area, can be derived from the taxonomic and biogeographic information acquired during this project: (a) The CERRA region, loosely defined as that area extending from the Barrington Tops, northern New South Wales, to southeast Queensland, is a significant zoogeographic refugium in terms of the evolution of Australian invertebrate taxa. Examples occur extensively within the taxa listed in Appendix 1 and are discussed in the Overview. Particular examples are the terrestrial snail family Charopidae, the freshwater snail family Hydrobiidae, the beetle taxa Adeliini, Cyphaleini, Coprini, Denticollinae, Rutelinae, Melolonthinae, Lucanidae, flightless beetles in the family Carabidae, the fly family Drosophilidae and dolichopodid subfamily Sciapodinae, parastacid crayfish, aradid bugs, the Onychophoran family Peripatopsidae and mygalomoph spiders. (b) The CERRA region includes a high proportion of taxa with “Gondwanan” or “Old Southern Endemic” affiliations. This group includes taxa with relatives on other Gondwanan landmasses such as South America, Africa and the Indian subcontinent, and those restricted to Australasia. Some taxa are restricted to Australia but with close relatives in either New Caledonia or New Zealand, but not both. Within known ranges, individual taxa can be widespread or relictual. Examples of “southern” fauna exist across all taxonomic levels—from species to that of subphylum. Notable higher taxonomic rank examples are the megascolecid earthworms, mygalomorph and amphectid spiders, harvestmen in the family Acropsopilionidae, the mite family Pheroliodidae, and the terrestrial snail families Athoracophoridae, Charopidae, Cystopeltidae and Rhytididae. The insects are well represented, and include the beetle family Phloeostichidae and tribes Pamborini, Migadopini, Adeliini, Epistomentini and Stigmoderini, flies in the family Pelecorhynchidae, the subfamily Arachnocampinae and the tribe Pangoniini, the moth families Hepialidae and Micropterigidae, the “birdwing” butterfly genus Ornithoptera, the hemipteran bug families Idiostolidae and Peloridiidae, the neuropteran lacewing subfamilies Kempyninae and Stenosmylinae, ambositrine and hyptiogastrine wasps, and the plecopteran families Austroperlidae, Eustheniidae and Gripopterygidae. Species keys using external characters are given for the 33 microchiropteran bat species recorded from south-eastern Australia, except for the five species of the taxonomically chaotic genus Mormopterus, and female Eptesicus. The key is designed for use by non-specialists. Identification criteria, synonyms and broad distributional limits are summarised in individual species accounts. Substantial taxonomic uncertainty affects two thirds of the species in southeastern Australia. Field identification of a significant proportion of species remains problematical because reliable external, diagnostic characters are not known. Consequently, easy or accurate field identification is not possible for many species. The need to retain voucher specimens to confirm identifications is emphasised.","PeriodicalId":279740,"journal":{"name":"Technical Reports of The Australian Museum","volume":"213 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130308196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some new synonymies, particularly involving species described by R.W. Wells and C.R. Wellington, are proposed. SHEA, GLENN M., & ROSS A. SADLIER, 1999. A catalogue of the non-fossil amphibian and reptile type specimens in the collection of the Australian Museum: types currently, previously and purportedly present. Technical Reports of the Australian Museum 15: 1–91. Technical Reports of the Australian Museum (1999) No. 15. ISSN 1031-8062, ISBN 0-7313-8873-9 Several changes to the herpetological collections of the Australian Museum have prompted us to prepare this second, updated catalogue of the amphibian and reptile type specimens, though following only 20 years after the first herpetological type catalogue for the collection (Cogger, 1979). Firstly, a large number of species have been described since 1979, with a correspondingly large number of primary and secondary types deposited in the collection. Amongst these have been the numerous holotypes and lectotypes resulting from two contentious works by Wells & Wellington (1984, 1985). These two works have been the subject of much criticism (Gans, 1985; Grigg and Shine, 1985; King & Miller, 1985; Tyler, 1985; Cogger, 1986; Shea, 1987a; King, 1988; Ingram & Covacevich, 1989; Underwood & Stimson, 1990; Hutchinson & Donnellan, 1992), culminating in an application to the International Commission for Zoological Nomenclature to suppress both works for the purposes of nomenclature (President, Australian Society of Herpetologists, 1987). The Commission recently declined to suppress either work (Anon., 1991) on the basis that the arguments opposing suppression were strong, that the problems arising from the work were mostly taxonomic rather than nomenclatural, that confusion would not be eliminated by suppression of the works, and that stability of 2 Technical Reports of the Australian Museum (1999) No. 15 nomenclature would best be served by subsequent usage, and the new taxa erected by Wells and Wellington must now be considered nomenclaturally available. However, many of the taxa described in these two works are of dubious status, with a number apparently omina nuda (Shea, 1987a), and many of the nominated types were identified by field numbers only. Consequently, we use this catalogue to present the full data for these specimens, and to reconsider the nomenclatural availability and taxonomic status of those new species erected by Wells and Wellington that were based on material previously held in or","PeriodicalId":279740,"journal":{"name":"Technical Reports of The Australian Museum","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123802130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
