Crosby","doi":"10.1002/nml.21571","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1002/nml.21571","url":null,"abstract":"This study examines how a collaboration's internal and external factors interact over time and how the interactions affect the collaboration's process and effectiveness. Using a process-oriented case study, we examine how a voluntary collaboration that had made marginal gains over several years demonstrated significant progress during the COVID-19 pandemic and civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. Drawing on strong structuration theory, we explore the collaboration's internal efforts, changes in the broader environment, and the interplay between them. Our findings reveal that collaboration's internal efforts and external environment enable and constrain each other, which shapes the collaboration's process and effectiveness. Based on these findings, we contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the collaboration process and effectiveness by (1) using a strong structurational approach to demonstrate processual mechanics of connecting processes and structures in collaboration, and (2) highlighting the emergent nature of collaboration and the importance of learning and adaptability for an effective and sustainable collaboration.","PeriodicalId":279046,"journal":{"name":"Nonprofit Management and Leadership","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130517794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kang","doi":"10.1002/nml.21570","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1002/nml.21570","url":null,"abstract":"Mission statements are important for the performance of nonprofit organizations (NPOs), but many of them are not concrete enough to influence nonprofit performance and prior research has studied the concreteness of mission statements in two divergent ways. We investigated how the two aspects of concrete mission statement influence internal and external stakeholders of NPOs differently and affect nonprofit performance. We first conducted an automated text analysis to determine the relationship between the concreteness of the 100 largest US NPOs' mission statements and organizational performance (Study 1). To validate the measure of the automated text analysis and reveal the relationship between the two aspects of concrete mission statements, we additionally conducted randomized controlled experiments with 76 professionals in the nonprofit field who were in charge of evaluating organizational performance (Study 2). Results of both studies suggest that concrete mission statements are positively related to organizational performance and that nonprofit professionals' perceived concreteness of mission statements drives their prediction of higher organizational performance. Theoretical and practical implications for the concreteness of NPOs' mission statements are discussed.","PeriodicalId":279046,"journal":{"name":"Nonprofit Management and Leadership","volume":"259 2‐3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132703131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
