One specific research area that would tremendously benefit from this approach is the area of identification and control of high performance aircraft, especially at high angles of attack. Under those flight conditions, the control task becomes extremely difficult due to added design complexity and hard nonlinearities characterizing the system. In this paper, the authors investigate one type of neural networks, namely radial basis function (RBF) networks, and apply them to the identification and control problems of an aircraft system. The RBF network is used as an on-line approximator of the aircraft pitch dynamics, combined with a nonlinear control law to improve the closed-loop system performance. The results are illustrated through simulations using a nonlinear model of the F-16 aircraft pitch dynamics.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":276779,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Control and Applications","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123782246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the dynamics of the walking gait and desired joint trajectories, a robust adaptive control scheme consisting of a control law and an adaptation law was chosen. The control law has the structure of the inverse dynamics servo but uses estimates of the dynamics parameters in the computation of torques which propel the biped. The adaptation law uses the tracking error to compute the parameter estimates for the control law. Simulations show that the tracking errors are acceptably small and the performance is robust despite /spl plusmn/25% deviations in the initial parameter estimates.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":276779,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Control and Applications","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124867302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper discusses the modelling of a 2-degree-of-freedom (bounce/pitch) system with structural modes, and compares a classically designed control law with that generated by an LQG approach. The robustness to uncertainties in the characteristics of the structural modes is a particular feature, and development of the control laws through a physical insight approach is emphasised.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":276779,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Control and Applications","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131770870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two levels of estimation problems are distinguished : the estimation of constant parameters and the estimation of time-varying parameters. In the application to biological processes, since the evolutions of biomass, substrates and metabolites are often linearly independent of time, the persistently exciting condition for the estimation of time-varying parameters can often be satisfied. The method was applied to identify the process of the production of temperate phages in continuous culture. This is an important economical problem because some industrial strains are sensitive to phage infection. For this process, an adaptive estimation scheme was established to identify some biological constants and two reaction rates. The efficiency was verified by the simulation results.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":276779,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Control and Applications","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134399155","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides fault detection and diagnosis using neither observer residuals nor parameter estimation errors, instead, it relies on the estimation of the underlying modal parameters of the dynamic system, and compares the estimates with the pre-calculated characteristic patterns which are represented as a set of root loci of physical parameters. The modal estimation is carried out using a numerically robust least square algorithm based on SVD (Singular Value Decomposition). A pattern recognition technique based on linear multiprototype distance functions is used to classify the faults according to the variation of physical parameters. The method possesses several advantages over the existing techniques: (i) the nature of the fault can be easily identified since the scheme uses physical parameters, rather than model parameters, for classification; (ii) the effect of disturbance on diagnosis is minimized because the modal estimation algorithm treats the disturbance as additional dynamics which are eliminated in the classification stage using truncated SVD; (iii) it is sufficient to use only one measurement signal, since any signal within the control loop contains all necessary modal information for fault diagnosis; and (iv) faults which cause various amount of parameter variation can be easily accommodated by proper selection of parameter ranges in constructing root loci. The method has successfully been applied to a DC servo system.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":276779,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Control and Applications","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125631433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Customarily, the surface is selected as a hyperplane in the system state-space resulting in a PD type sliding surface. This is not the only possible structure, and other designs with more complex or time-varying surfaces may provide definite advantages. We present a new design procedure and stability analysis for robotic variable structure controllers with PID like sliding surface. Two versions of the controllers are presented: regular and adaptive. The former is very simple and can operate with an unknown robot dynamic model; the only information required is a bound on one parameter. The latter provides an online estimation for this bound. Both versions of the controllers are robust with respect to bounded external disturbances and some unmodeled dynamic effects. The control schemes are applied to an industrial robot without requiring the knowledge of the dynamic model and the parameter values of the robot. Experiments conducted with a Reis industrial robot have shown stable and accurate performance of the developed controller.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":276779,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Control and Applications","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132252142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although analytical results obtained via application of the minimum principle are limited to low order processes, we illustrate how to exploit these results in characterizing nearly optimal control sequences in terms of the qualitative behavior of the specific rates for growth and production as functions of the limiting substrates. Furthermore, the deduced control sequences lead in a natural way to the design of optimal adaptive feedback controllers, which combine a nearly optimal performance with good robustness properties against modeling uncertainties and process disturbances.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":276779,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Control and Applications","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133807126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
