It is considered pathological when symptoms are disproportionate to the provocative stimulus, negatively interfering with the patient's quality of life. Objectives: To report the causes of anxiety in medical students based on the literature. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review that aimed to answer the guiding question: “why are medical students so vulnerable to anxiety disorders?”. The search occurred through the databases Virtual Health Library (VHL), using the following descriptors and their combinations to search for the articles: “anxiety”, “students” and “anxiety and medical students”, initially returning 593 articles. The filters chosen were: Brazil as a country of affiliation, year of publication from 2010 to 2019, languages Portuguese and English and article as a type of document. After that, the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the selected articles were used, selecting 14 articles with the greatest title relevance with the theme of study. Results and Discussion: Anxiety can be beneficial to some degree, as it prepares individuals for dangerous situations. However, after a certain point, it can become a pathological condition. Several studies reveal that the leisure of those students is negatively affected by the excess of charges in the academic environment and by the high course load. The high prevalence of anxiety symptoms in medical students is probably related to the stressors inherent in the academic training and to the psychodynamic characteristics of each one. Studies have shown that, despite the high level of distress that affects medical students, only 8% through 15% of them seek psychiatric treatment during their training. The occurrence of mood and anxiety disorders during graduation, when not detected and properly treated, can perpetuate or worsen during medical residency and professional activity. Final Thoughts: Anxiety disorders are quite prevalent nowadays, and affect from children to adults and the elderly. In order to protect the mental health of those students, the development of support and psychological support strategies is essential, for both the prevention and reduction of this disorder, and must be promoted by educational institutions in order to favor the best professional learning and training.","PeriodicalId":275801,"journal":{"name":"Temas em Saúde - Edição Especial","volume":"40 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122727835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is an integrative review study, developed based on the phases of the elaboration process (six phases): delimitation of the guiding question; establishment of inclusion and exclusion criteria; database searches; analysis and interpretation of results; critical analysis with discussion of results; and presentation of the integrative review. Scientific articles were found in the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) and Virtual Health using the The inclusion criteria were literatures freely available online in Portuguese, English or Spanish, in the period within the past ten years. The results of the integrative review showed that breastfeeding was recommended in about 64% of the articles analyzed; breastfeeding up to two years of age was also another factor highlighted, about 37% of the articles make the recommendation, the use of pacifiers was reported in 30% of the surveys. Regarding the intake of foods other than breast milk, about 30% specify that they do not need to drink other fluids in the first six months of life.
