Recent studies, at last, have proven the significance of the earth tide effect in triggering earthquakes, and they further reported that the direction of the compressional stress at a region created by the earth tide almost coincides with that of the dominant principal pressure axes of the focal mechanisms at the region. This suggests that there might be specific positions of the Moon, Sun and Earth, known as lunar phases that create effective tidal force for earthquakes at each fault. So that, this paper examines the relationship between earthquakes and the lunar phases in some specific regions of Japan, and the significant effect of earth tide in triggering earthquakes is confirmed.","PeriodicalId":274637,"journal":{"name":"Journal of atmospheric electricity","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115823960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have been designing and developing Broadband Observation network for Lightning and Thunderstorm (BOLT) which locates radiation sources in 3D associated with lightning discharges. The BOLT consists of four or more LF receivers which detect electromagnetic (EM) waves in a wide frequency range from 5kHz to 500kHz. We have been operating the BOLT in Kansai, Japan, since Oct. 2012, for locating preliminary breakdowns (PB) followed by lightning discharges. We define PB from its pulse width and interpulse duration. In addition, we classified PB pulses into +PB and -PB, depending on initial polarity of PB pulses in the atmospheric electricity sign convention. In this paper, we identified 342 +PB pulses and 139 –PB pulses. We found that most of the -PB pulses occurred about 2.5 km higher than +PB. From a comparison of radar reflectivity factor it is found that most of the +PB and –PB pulses, respectively, occurred in the lower part or below the high reflectivity regions, and in the upper part or above the high reflectivity region. These results indicate that the difference of the polarity of PB pulses is determined by the polarity of charge region around locations of PB pulses.","PeriodicalId":274637,"journal":{"name":"Journal of atmospheric electricity","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127911395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

POTEKA (POint TEnki KAnsoku in Japanese) compact weather stations can observe seven meteorological variables, including temperature and pressure. In Gunma and Saitama prefectures, Japan, about 150 POTEKAs have been installed to create a high density ground surface observation network which has a resolution of approximately 2 km. This observation network has observed multiple downburst and damaging wind events, and has revealed the characteristics of downbursts, such as changes in the meteorological variables and phenomena proceeding these events (Iwashita et al. 2019). By analyzing the downburst event on Jun 15, 2015, which was the most damaging event observed by the network, we have succeeded in developing a downburst gust prediction system that utilizes the high density ground surface observation data. The high density ground surface observation network can be used to predict the occurrence of a downburst event several minutes in advance using temperature and pressure data. The cumulonimbus forward velocity can be calculated from the distance and time between the locations of temperature drops. Areas with a high probability of gust occurrence can be estimated based on the magnitude of the temperature drop. Thus, it may be possible to predict the occurrence times and locations of downburst gust events by utilizing high-resolution observations of the temperature and pressure.","PeriodicalId":274637,"journal":{"name":"Journal of atmospheric electricity","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130380458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The quick-look data show the existence of two intense electrostatic noise bands, one high frequency band between 04 and 18 kHz and other low frequency band below 01 kHz in majority of passes. The noise bands are electrostatic because no similar data are seen in the magnetic channel of the satellite. The characteristics of high frequency noise bands are similar to the lower hybrid resonance (LHR) bands observed in earlier satellite experiments. The data also show the occurrence of intense VLF noise bursts of duration two to three hours in the low latitude ionosphere which are analyzed thoroughly and found containing numerous first-hop magnetospherically reflected (MR) whistlers. There are some welldefined large dispersion whistlers also which appear to have propagated to the satellite in hybrid mode of propagation. A comparison with the ground data observed simultaneously at Agra station indicate insignificant and feeble nature of whistlers recorded on the ground suggesting that satellite whistlers propagated in nonducted mode of propagation and did not reach the ground. Various possibilities for the rare occurrence of VLF bursts are discussed.","PeriodicalId":274637,"journal":{"name":"Journal of atmospheric electricity","volume":"451 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132796312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to experimental data for some geographical regions (for example, Japan) the quantity of these raindrops is too large. This fact restricts the use of well known distributions in the terahertz range. So, taking into account small raindrops, the new distribution is proposed and the radio waves specific attenuation due to rain is estimated more precisely for mentioned and some other geographical regions.","PeriodicalId":274637,"journal":{"name":"Journal of atmospheric electricity","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131945398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To examine the possibility of chemical channel of LAIC through the practical monitoring of atmospheric electricity parameters, we have installed sensors of the atmospheric electric field (AEF), atmospheric ion concentration (AIC), atmospheric radon concentration (ARC), radon exhalation quantity (REQ), and weather elements. In this paper, we investigate the properties of variation in atmospheric electricity parameters (precipitation disturbance (AIC, AEF), seasonal diurnal variation (AIC, AEF, REQ), correlation with atmospheric pressure (REQ), and correlation between atmospheric electricity parameters) observed at Asahi station (ASA) and Kiyosumi station (KYS), Japan to understand the characteristics of their variations. The results suggest that radon emanation from the ground could modify the variations of AIC and AEF. However, site effects based on environmental factors such as geological setting, geography, vegetation, and so on should be taken in account properly.","PeriodicalId":274637,"journal":{"name":"Journal of atmospheric electricity","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127621549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the course of this study it is noticed that quick fading patterns of whistler waves obtained by a sound-spectrograph, sonagraph, show an inflation such as semi-circular shift to the right. In order to explain this phenomenon the fading of two artificial whistlers generated by using a digital computer and a D/ A converter was analyzed by the sonagraph. It is concluded as a result of the experiment that the rightward inflation of the trace is caused by the resonance echo of a high-Q bandpass filter mounted on the sonagraph.","PeriodicalId":274637,"journal":{"name":"Journal of atmospheric electricity","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124583653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, there are many papers on electromagnetic pre-earthquake phenomena such as geomagnetic, ionospheric, and atmospheric anomalous changes. Ionospheric anomaly preceding large earthquakes is one of the most promising phenomena. Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling (LAIC) model has been proposed to explain these phenomena. In this study, to evaluate the possibility of chemical channel of LAIC by observation, we have installed sensors for atmospheric electric field, atmospheric ion concentration, atmospheric Rn concentration, underground Rn concentration (GRC), and weather elements at Asahi station, Boso, Japan. Since the atmospheric electricity parameters are very much influenced by weather factors, it is necessary to remove these effects as much as possible. In this aim, we apply the MSSA (Multi-channel Singular Spectral Analysis) to remove these influences from the variation of GRC and estimate the underground Rn flux (GRF). We investigated the correlations between GRF and the local seismic activity around Asahi station. The preliminary results show that there is a tendency of correlation between GRF and local seismicity within an epicenter distance of 50 km from the station.","PeriodicalId":274637,"journal":{"name":"Journal of atmospheric electricity","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116911159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this paper is to try to find any correlation between the ionospheric perturbation as detected by subionospheric VLF/LF propagation and ground motions as detected by wideband seismic observations (so-called F-net). Two huge earthquakes are chosen for our analysis; (1) Niigata-chuetsu-oki earthquake on July 16, 2007 and (2) Iwate-nairiku-nambu earthquake on June 13, 2008. The AW(acoustic wave, period=1-10 min) and AGW(atmospheric gravity wave, period=10-100 min) components in the ground motions are compared with the ionospheric perturbation. It is found that the ground motions in the AGW and AW ranges are enhanced as compared with the backgrounds when the lower ionosphere is perturbed, which might be a possible source of ionospheric perturbation. Though the number of events is only two, this correlation may lend a support to the atmospheric oscillation hypothesis of the lithosphere-ionosphere coupling due to some precursory ground effect. by means of the direct observations of Doppler-Journal","PeriodicalId":274637,"journal":{"name":"Journal of atmospheric electricity","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117183520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
