Reznik","doi":"10.2352/ei.2023.35.8.iqsp-305","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2352/ei.2023.35.8.iqsp-305","url":null,"abstract":"We review the design of the SSIM quality metric and offer an alternative model of SSIM computation, utilizing subband decomposition and identical distance measures in each subband. We show that this model performs very close to the original and offers many advantages from a methodological standpoint. It immediately brings several possible explanations of why SSIM is effective. It also suggests a simple strategy for band noise allocation optimizing SSIM scores. This strategy may aid the design of encoders or pre-processing filters for video coding. Finally, this model leads to more straightforward mathematical connections between SSIM, MSE, and SNR metrics, improving previously known results. The safety challenges have pushed the automotive industry to develop a set of image quality metrics to measure the intrinsic camera performances and degradations. However more metrics are needed to correctly estimate computer vision algorithms performance, which depends on environmental conditions. In this article we consider several metrics that have been proposed in the literature: CDP, CSNR and FCR. The perceived quality of such data can be impacted by typical processing including acquisition, compression, transmission, visualization, etc. In this paper, we propose a learning-based method that efficiently predicts the quality of distorted PCs through a set of features extracted from the reference PC and its degraded version. The quality index is obtained here by combining the considered features using a Support Vector Regression (SVR) model. The performance contribution of each considered feature and their combination are compared. We then discuss the experimental results obtained in the context of state-of-the-art methods using 2 publicly available datasets. We also evaluate the ability of our method to predict unknown PCs through a cross-dataset evaluation. The results show the relevance of introducing a learning step to merge features for the quality assessment of such data. and the performance contribution of each is evaluated.
