As a consequence of the strong fundamental C-H stretch mode that occurs at around 3.3μm, the detection of many important hydrocarbon species has maximum sensitivity (potentially ∼ parts per trillion) in this range. This leads to many important applications in various areas, for example, clinical diagnostics, process monitoring and remote detection of oil and gas deposits. This short wavelength IR region is also of interest for several defence and security applications as well as free-space “last mile” telecommunications. The unsuitability of the “conventional” InGaAs/AlInAs materials system for high performance QCL sources in this short wavelength range has led to significant interest in new QCL materials with very high conduction band offsets (ΔE<inf>c</inf>) based on III-V antimonides such as InAs/AlSb/InAs (ΔE<inf>c</inf> ∼ 2 eV) and InGaAs/AlAs(Sb)/InP (ΔE<inf>c</inf> ≤ 1.6 eV). Very recently, significant progress has been made in the development of these “short wavelength” QCLs operating in the close vicinity of λ ∼ 3 μm. In our work, we have focussed on the InGaAs/AlAsSb system, which provides both a very high ΔE<inf>c</inf> that can comfortably accommodate the high energy intersubband transitions required, and lattice-matched compatibility with InP. This latter feature is extremely important as it greatly simplifies optical waveguide development and facilitates advanced device fabrication. Recent highlights of our research on InGaAs/AlAs(Sb) QCLs have included strain compensated QCL growth, the shortest wavelength room temperature InP-based QCL operation at around 3.1μm [1] and novel high performance structures at λ ∼ 4.1 μm with selectively incorporated AlAs barriers in the active regions.","PeriodicalId":273355,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topical Meeting Series","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126891344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Processes such as parametric down-conversion (PDC) and four-wave mixing provide natural sources of quantum entangled beams endowed with spatial entanglement properties that are useful in quantum imaging. We will review these well known features in the case of PDC, and the technique which allows for an imaging with a sensitivity beyond the standard quantum limit, which has been theoretically predicted [1] and experimentally demonstrated [2].","PeriodicalId":273355,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topical Meeting Series","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114130092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Today, there are a large number of applications requiring high power beams at wavelengths longer than 2 μm, and non-oxide based glass fibers with low phonon energies and high infrared transparency are very attractive for applications in this region. Fluoride, tellurite, and chalcogenide fibers are the best choices for this purpose. An important issue in high power fiber based Raman amplification (RA) is the heat generated inside the active medium due to the quantum defect between the pump and the amplified wavelengths. The increase in the temperature of the laser medium can detrimentally affect laser performance, by degrading the quality of the amplified beam, causing a decrease in the efficiency of the process, thermal lensing and self focussing. The cooling of the laser medium is a key issue for improving laser performance and increasing the laser's lifetime. Mitigation of the heat generated in Raman lasers using coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering has been suggested in Ref. [1].","PeriodicalId":273355,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topical Meeting Series","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128342632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
