Andrew","doi":"10.4314/STECH.V6I2.6","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4314/STECH.V6I2.6","url":null,"abstract":"Rain is a natural phenomenon in which showers by means of natural causation down- pours water from the sky for the purpose of moisturing the earth, man, plants and animals for their sustenance. Without water, survival for man, plants and animals on earth will be a mirage. The fact that the Tiv are farmers who produce variety of crops implies that the Tivs necessarily need rain for their survival and for the crops and animals they rear. Thus, when the Tivs experience a dearth in rain, they employ the services of the yilan ura (rain maker) of the community for the purposes of ura yilan (rain making). The art and science of rain making among the Tiv is meant to avert catastrophe in the community for man, plants and animals. In making rain, the Tiv do not usurp or short change Aondo - the Supreme Being; but they do so conscious of the fact that Aondo has given them the arcane knowledge to tap into and control the natural resources of their environment for their benefit. Thus, the study is motivated by the factors responsible for ura yilan and the techniques employed by the Tiv to bring about rain and the derivable benefits there from. The study employed both the primary and secondary methods to collect data. Oral interviews were held with rain makers in selected parts of Tivland. In the secondary method, information was collected from books, journals, encyclopaedias, newspapers and magazines, etc. The study established that the Tiv, like other ethnic nationalities across the globe, make rain when circumstances demand. The Tiv therefore, make rain for different purposes including for productive, destructive/obstructive purposes as well as the detection of evil in the community. Ura yilan (rain making) among the Tiv was important in the sense that it procured bountiful harvest, regulated evil and cleansed Tiv society of defilement as well as bringing peace and happiness in the society. Expectedly, several taboos followed the making of rain among the Tiv; for instance, the genuine or yilan ura was prohibited from touching a corpse, never interacted with women observing their menstrual cycle and neither was he in the habit of collecting ingyato (consent fee) to cause the death of members of his community. In conclusion the study notes that although the art of rain making has drastically receded with the advent of western education and Christianity; where it becomes necessary for the Tiv to make rain, it should be for productive but not destructive ventures.","PeriodicalId":272760,"journal":{"name":"AFRREV STECH: An International Journal of Science and Technology","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131630805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It differentiates it from the α y x coordinate model, which it introduces as an analytic approach for the achievement of the same objective. The coordinate is stated as: α x y = x /2( 2n / 2y ) . The αyx is shown by analysis to derive from the coordinate of x and y as α y x = x / y . y is shown to derive from the coefficient of C y and C y = 2n / 2y (T,F) 2y / 2 . C y is an algebraic function introduced in the paper for the computation of truth table columns. The paper shows by implication that the delineation of the value of any truth table unit no longer stands in need of pictorial aids due to the introduction of the coordinate. Results from analysis shows that the specific value of a truth table unit could be determined set theoretically, without an actual truth table provided the α y x coordinate is applied. Such infrastructure enhances information management, cooperation and coordination during e-transactions. The infrastructure that allows such transactions to thrive and grow is a model for an interactive web-based Extranet system and not just a site for transactions. This infrastructure must be carefully planned and modeled from the outset of Extranet modeling, particularly in a web-based environment. This research adopted an interactive web-based Extranet system for students’ academic records in Ambrose Alli University, as a research domain, which depicts a positive trend towards achieving objectives for students, lecturers and parents to access and compute results online rather than maintaining physical documents. The database will serve as repository of students’ academic records over a long period of time. Such are called mysteries, for instance, the existence of God in itself is shrouded in mysteries. However, the problem is that today sciences use mysteries but deny that they do not have room for it. They are pretending because the entire theoretical framework of all scientists is not empirical. In this paper, we are establishing that we live in the middle of mysteries if we care to notice it, and we are surrounded by mysteries. Therefore, we need to be humble at the presence of the Supreme Being. But now the contemporary man because of science and technology thinks he/she knows everything which leads to pride and arrogance - the ills of our society. Our method is textual analysis; it is a critical look at the works written on mysteries in order to learn from the mysteries, since we cannot understand it all through reasoning and scientific experiments. The paper identified contradictions and overlapping statutory responsibility that constituted policy implementation impediments’ and galvanized discourse toward effective implementable policy. A paradigm shift is advocated by making the River Basin Development Authorities (RBDAs) the center stage of the nation’s water resources policy development and implementation. But considering the underdeveloped status of Nigeria, there are three critical sectors whose effective functionalities are synergistic for accomplishing the RBDAs vision. These are Energy, Food and Public Health. It is imperative to temporarily focus the nation’s water policy on them for a period of at least ten years through enactment of “Dedicated Water Resources Bill”. The Bill should only address (1) institutional framework (2) Energy, Food and Public Health security and (3) Integrated water resources management. The paper went on to state that 28 years have passed since the programme was inaugurated, Nigerians are yet to fully realize the benefits of privatization programme. The management corruption and inefficiency are still the order of the day. The paper was of the opinion that it is the same corrupt leaders who mismanaged those public enterprises that are clamouring for the sale of them, they are the same people who purchased them at very low prices. The paper concludes by saying that the programme only afforded some corrupt leaders and their foreign collaborators in advanced countries of the world the Opportunities to acquire those properties at the detriment of the average Nigerian, meanwhile the purpose and objectives of the programme are still hanging on the air. In recommendation, the paper draws attention of the Government to the number of people who have lost their jobs as a result of privatization. The arrivals of customers and service times of customers are assumed poisson and exponential distributions respectively. This queuing model is an extension of single queue, single server with limited system capacity. Performance measures of the model, such as the expected number of customers in the queue and in the system, the expected waiting times of customers in the queue and in the system respectively were derived. The performance measures so derived were compared with that of single queue, single server with limited capacity {M/M/1:(N/FCFS)} model. It is truly the traditional expression of Nigerian indigenous architecture. Its definition, historical evolution, functions and typology is worth investigating. Also, its adaptation to the contemporary architectural design and practice in different building typology in the Nigerian context will be studied. Different courtyard house studies were examined through Journal papers, conference papers and the literatures. These studies revealed that the use of courtyard in buildings (in Nigeria) is from time of old, and has become adaptive to contemporary architectural design and practice. It has almost similar form with different features due to the religious and cultural diversity of the Nigerian people. The paper concluded that, the application of courtyard in the Nigerian various traditional architecture has been influence by the religious and cultural requirements of its people rather than climatic conditions and, therefore, for the purpose of cultural preservation of the Nigerian various indigenous architecture, the courtyard concept should not be discarded in the contemporary architectural style but should also be based on the climatic and passive design strategies for the attainment of a built environment that has a sense of interrelatedness with its local conditions.
