At the crux of the Fleishman method is the solution of a non-linear system of equations needed to obtain the constants to transform data from normality to non-normality. A rarely acknowledged fact in the literature is that the solution to this system is not unique, and it is currently unknown what influence the different types of solutions have on the computer-generated data. To address this issue, analytical and empirical investigations were conducted, aimed at documenting the impact that each solution type has on the design of computer simulations. In the first study, it was found that certain types of solutions generate data with different multivariate properties and wider coverage of the theoretical range spanned by population correlations. In the second study, it was found that previously published recommendations from Monte Carlo simulations could change if different types of solutions were used to generate the data. A mathematical description of the multiple solutions to the Fleishman polynomials is provided, as well as recommendations for users of this method.</p>","PeriodicalId":272649,"journal":{"name":"The British journal of mathematical and statistical psychology","volume":"71 3","pages":"437-458"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/bmsp.12126","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"35727605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This question may be answered empirically using indistinguishability tests in the actor-partner interdependence model. In this paper several issues related to such indistinguishability tests are discussed: the difference between maximum likelihood and restricted maximum likelihood based tests for equality in variance parameters; the choice between the structural equation modelling and multilevel modelling framework; and the use of sequential testing rather than one global test for a set of indistinguishability tests. Based on simulation studies, we provide guidelines for best practice. All different types of tests are illustrated with cross-sectional and longitudinal data, and corroborated with corresponding R code.</p>","PeriodicalId":272649,"journal":{"name":"The British journal of mathematical and statistical psychology","volume":"71 3","pages":"472-498"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/bmsp.12129","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"35833511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In some applications, however, key qualitative distinctions among persons as to structures and strategies can be expressed through mixtures of test theory models, drawing on substantive theory to delineate the components of the mixture. This approach is illustrated with response latencies to spatial visualization tasks that can be solved by mental rotation or by a non-rotational rule-based strategy.
