They function as hubs of knowledge and are instrumental in supporting the educational goals outlined in the NEP. This article examines the intricate and significant part that libraries play in the effective execution of the NEP, specifically within the context of NEP 2020. It discusses how libraries can promote access to diverse knowledge resources, encourage research, and foster critical thinking skills among students. By utilizing the potential of libraries as centers of learning, higher education institutions can establish a more inclusive and just learning environment according to the NEP’s vision. The primary focus of this study is to comprehensively elaborate on the multi-faceted involvement of libraries, including the active promotion of digital literacy, cultivation of research efforts and innovative initiatives, and facilitation of an all-encompassing and impartial approach to acquiring information for all segments of society. The article notes that libraries can contribute to the promotion of digital literacy, which is a critical aspect of the NEP. As the use of digital technologies in education increases, libraries play a vital role in providing access to a wide range of digital resources, such as e-books, online databases, and various digital learning materials. They can provide instructional guidance and assistance to both students and faculty members on the effective use of digital tools and platforms, leading to a significant improvement in their digital literacy skills. Libraries also offer access to a vast array of scholarly resources, including academic journals, research papers, and books. This accessibility empowers students and faculty members to engage in significant research endeavors. They also provide guidance and direction for conducting literature reviews, accessing relevant research databases, and keeping up with the latest developments in various disciplines. Therefore, libraries serve as collaborative spaces for interdisciplinary research and innovation, facilitating knowledge sharing and networking among students and faculty members, which is essential for NEP 2020. This research emphasizes the expected academic roles of libraries in enhancing all educational programs and proposes specific strategies to improve their functions. Previous literature is combined with qualitative research data from semi-structured interviews with 125 faculties, including Professors, Associate Professors, and working librarians from four universities associated with higher education institutions. Questionnaires and interview tools were used to explore the relevant data collection instruments.","PeriodicalId":272634,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Information Science and Technology","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139236807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Five research objectives with conforming research questions guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive research design. The population of the study consists of One Hundred and ten lecturers from Michael and Cecilia Ibru University. The total enumerative and accidental sampling was adopted in selecting the lecturers. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire with the title “Usage of Open Digital Educational Resources (ODERQ)”. Data was analyzed, using frequency and percentage. Findings revealed that MCIU lecturers are very aware of ODER, and they know how it can be used in the classroom and their level of usage was high. They consult open access journals and open e-books amongst others for their research work and also to prepare their lecture notes. The benefit derived from ODER was that it provides free online access to the literature necessary for their research work and it also provides quality free materials which they make use of in carrying out their research work. Poor power supply, lack of retrieval skills and inadequate ICT facilities among others were the identified problems associated with the use of ODER. The study recommended among others that lecturers should make frequent digital use of open educational resources. Also, orientations, workshop and seminar should be organized by librarians and the ICT unit of the university on the use of ODER for academic purpose.","PeriodicalId":272634,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Information Science and Technology","volume":"215 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127606588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research was guided by two (2) questions. The researchers used a descriptive survey approach. The population of the study comprised 1787 faculty members from the four-state Universities in Bayelsa and Rivers State. Convenience sampling techniques were done as the study employed all of the respondents to the questionnaire from the entire population. Data was collected using an online questionnaire. Educational technology specialists evaluated the questionnaire. The Cronbach alpha value of 0.96 was discovered after analyzing the study’s data to look for internal consistency and reliability. The questionnaire was deemed credible based on the coefficient discovered. The frequency count, basic percentages, and mean were used to examine the data. The results showed that faculty opinions on the use of OER were favorable. It was also discovered that inadequate access to electricity, poor Internet connectivity, ignorance, a lack of library sensitization, and a lack of ICT skills were some of the main obstacles to the efficient use of OER. The researchers suggested that the universities should enhance their supply of electricity by providing alternative sources of power supply, provide adequate Internet facilities and encourage faculty to assist in encouraging students to use OER.","PeriodicalId":272634,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Information Science and Technology","volume":"237 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121632293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. The target population of the study comprised 514 library staff drawn from Rivers State library board and staff from Jubilee library Port Harcourt. The sample size for this study was 399 library staff comprising 227 staff from Rivers state library board and 172 library staff from Jubilee library Port Harcourt. An instrument titled library network security measures for archives preservation questionnaire was used for data collection. Face validity of the instrument was ensured by three experts. The instrument consists of 10 items of 2 sections. The instrument yielded reliability coefficients of 0.79 with the use of Cronbach Alpha reliability method. The findings indicated that, among other things, encryption technologies such as firewall protection and secure logins are part of the library’s network security measures that are employed to preserve archives in public libraries in Rivers state, Nigeria. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that public libraries in Rivers state are not lacking security features that would help preserve archives via a networked security system. However, the security measures were not effectively employed because staff members’ security training was not sufficiently available. As a result, it was recommended that more training in security should be provided to staff in all of the public libraries in Rivers state.","PeriodicalId":272634,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Information Science and Technology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130466395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
