In this paper, we compare and evaluate different Machine Learning (ML) algorithms for anomaly detection in industrial control networks. We analyze supervised and unsupervised ML-based anomaly detection approaches using datasets extracted from the Secure Water Treatment (SWaT), a testbed developed to emulate a scaled-down real industrial plant. Our experiments show strengths and limitations of the two ML-based anomaly detection approaches for industrial networks.","PeriodicalId":272577,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Measurements & Networking (M&N)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126129413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inertial sensors are widely used to obtain physiological and performance data during sporting activity in order to optimize training and recovery but also to reduce human error in competition. In this context several solutions have been proposed in literature regarding neuromuscular stimulations, transcutaneous excitations, and functional signals, very often based on invasive approaches. The device here studied is a non-invasive solution composed of two portable systems (i.e. to be fixed in both the limbs), with an electromechanical actuator and a wireless circuit to synchronize the two systems. The analyses conducted arouse interest from a neurological point of view in the perspective to study the effect of various stimulations for muscle performance improvement in athletes. For these reasons, the paper deals with the aspects of the stimulation used for sport training evaluation including performance defects and functional purposes. The study regarded different parameters including frequency, pulse width, pulse duration, waveforms, intensity, amplitude and pulse pattern. The experimental method and the signals related to induced stimulations will be here presented. All the collected data have been crucial to submit a specific multidisciplinary study to the ethics committee that must approve the related clinical study.","PeriodicalId":272577,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Measurements & Networking (M&N)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129159032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, the semi reverberating chamber (SRC) is obtained by simply realizing two anechoic corners within the RC. Experiments conducted by employing the RC of the Università degli Studi di Napoli Parthenope, formerly Istituto Universitario Navale (IUN), on the PDP, $tau_{rm{rms}}$ and pdf of the field amplitude, have been compared with theoretical expectation. Furthermore, measurements of multipath channel in a typical working environment, i.e. the IUN research laboratory, are made. Comparisons among the emulated compact parameters and the ones of real life environments, i.e. IUN electromagnetic laboratory, show the soundness of the new proposed technique.","PeriodicalId":272577,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Measurements & Networking (M&N)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114080188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are very useful to realize power transmission in case of receivers having some lateral misalignment or even a variable position. In order to reduce losses of energy, a receiver detection and a powering strategy of the sending coils under it is highly required. In this paper, a position detection method is proposed, which is based on the measurement of the voltage amplitude of the sending coils. To investigate the reliability of the novel detector, the measured voltage amplitude in presence of the receiving coil is compared to the voltage amplitude in presence of different metallic materials. The measurements have been carried out under co-concentric and misaligned receiver positions. Experimental results prove the efficiency of the proposed method to detect the receiver coil with various positions and sizes. It differentiates with a high reliability between a receiver coil and a conductive target material.","PeriodicalId":272577,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Measurements & Networking (M&N)","volume":"45 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125693978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These devices, however, are not able guarantee adequate accuracy in indoor scenarios, that represent the actual frontier of next-generation location-based services. To this aim, we present in this paper Wireless Locator (WI-LO), a novel framework for the indoor localization of smartphone devices and the automation of location-based tasks. Through the WI-LO Web portal, users can import an indoor planimetry, set the Reference Points (RPs), and define the actions to execute at each RP or region or RPs. The WI-LO localization engine implements hybrid Radio Finger-Printing (RF) techniques, and it leverages on a variety of sensors embedded in Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) smartphones (Wi-Fi, BLE, LTE, magnetometer). We investigate the utilization of Machine Learning (ML) techniques for the processing of the radio fingerprints of each source, and the application of fusion policies in order to aggregate the hard-decisions of each source. The evaluation analysis, conducted at the DISI@UNIBO department, confirms the ability of the WI-LO platform to deliver geo-fencing messages with over 90% accuracy, and it investigates the impact of different ML techniques, application parameters and scenario settings on the overall localization performance.","PeriodicalId":272577,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Measurements & Networking (M&N)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121623734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to ease this problem, assistive living systems can be deployed to support the elderly within their homes, providing them with a better quality of life while keeping healthcare costs low. In this paper we present a framework to monitor elderly activities using an RGB-D system. The solution uses depth information to determine the location of the elderly and report it to the cloud for later analysis. In turn relatives and carers can access the data to monitor the activity of the associated individual. Moreover, the system provides real-time alerts both to the elderly and the carers if abnormal behavior, such as a fall, is detected or no movement is registered for a long time span.","PeriodicalId":272577,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Measurements & Networking (M&N)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132390717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Focused on assistive technologies, RESILIEN-T aims to improve, through self-management, the autonomy, participation in social life, and skills, of older Persons with Cognitive Impairment (PwCI) who are too often considered as “objects” of research, rather than “partners”. The study investigates existing ICT solutions to improve the self-management ability of PwCl at different stages of cognitive impairment. Sensors, devices and apps to reduce the progression of the disease are analyzed. To increase sensor capability, innovative data management, i.e. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning algorithms, are considered to extract significant information from the data and optimize the sensor network. Moreover, approaches to involve end-users in the development are also investigated to enhance the final outputs. The study proposes a modular and integrated platform for PwCI to self-manage various activities including nutrition, physical activities, social life, cognitive training. The choice of offering an open API to integrate wearable devices and lifestyle monitoring systems from different suppliers makes available a customable and modular product. Considering that functional decline is part of the normal aging process, it might be challenging to individuate three levels of modular architecture to increase the accuracy of the monitoring with the decline of the cognitive capabilities.","PeriodicalId":272577,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Measurements & Networking (M&N)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127208716","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various energy-based techniques were developed to reduce the energy consumption. Most of these techniques use the residual energy of a sensor node as one of the significant factor to design an energy-aware scheme. However, these techniques estimate the residual energy based on the current or voltage. Thus, leading to fundamental errors as they do not consider the characteristics of batteries and the external impacts that can affect the network operability. In this paper, a low power cost effective circuit is designed to measure the current consumption, for later the power consumption is calculated and then the residual energy of the used batteries is measured. Experiments are carried out using the wireless node panStamp.","PeriodicalId":272577,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Measurements & Networking (M&N)","volume":"16 36","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132748092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sensor’s response measured in this work for the detection of PFBS is similar to the one obtained with Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), already investigated. The detection limit of PFBS is considered of interest when compared to those obtained by using different expensive traditional approaches, e.g. high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). Moreover, the use of this sensing approach is a very attractive perspective for fast, in situ, and remote low-cost detection of pollutants in water for smart cities applications.","PeriodicalId":272577,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Measurements & Networking (M&N)","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129022104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
