Baltaci","doi":"10.21653/TFRD.280073","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21653/TFRD.280073","url":null,"abstract":"Purpose:The aim of the study is to present a method used to estimate hand and finger contact areas on different sized objects and compare results of children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) with healthy peers.Methods:A total of 51 children, 26 with hemiparetic CP classified as I or II according to Manuel Ability Classification System and had 1 or 1+ level spasticity as to Modified Ashworth Scale and 25 healthy peers were included to the study. The contact area was calculated by the Cavalieri principle of stereological estimation after children grasped cylindrical objects having diameters of 2.5, 4 and 5 cm.Results:The contact areas were found to be different at the thenar side for the grasped object with 2.5 cm diameter, and at the hypothenar side for the objects with 4 and 5 cm diameters (p<0.05).Discussion:Clinicians are more interested with thumb since the contribution of adductor spasticity in CP. However, hypothenar contribution should be also considered especially with objects having larger diameters. The data gained from the study can guide rehabilitation efforts towards improving hand function.ÖzAmaç:Çalışmanın amacı farklı boyuttaki objelerde parmak ve el temas alanını hesaplamak için bir yöntem sunmak ve Serebral Palsi’li çocukların sonuçlarını sağlıklı grupla karşılaştırmaktır.Yöntemler:Manuel yetenek sınıflama sistemi’ne göre I veya II kavrama seviyesi bulunan, Modifiye Ashworth Skalasına göre 1 ya da 1+ seviyelerinde spastisiteye sahip olan 26 hemiparetik Serebral Palsi’li ve 25 sağlıklı toplam 51 çocuk çalışmaya alınmıştır. Çapları 2,5, 4 ve 5 cm olan silindirik objeler çocuklar tarafından kavrandıktan sonra temas alanları Cavalieri prensibi stereolojik ölçüm yöntemi ile hesaplanmıştır.Sonuç:Kavrama temas alanı 2,5 cm çaplı obje üzerinde tenar bölgede, 4 ve 5 cm çaplı obje üzerinde ise hipotenar bolgede istatistiksel olarak farklı bulunmuştur (p<0.05).Tartışma:Klinisyenler Serebral palside adduktor spastisitesi nedeniyle baş parmakla daha fazla ilgilenmektedir. Buna karşın, özellikle büyük çaplı obje kavraması sırasında dikkat hipotenar bölgeye de verilmelidir. {"title":"The relation of hallux valgus severity with foot function and balance in older men","authors":"Yasemin Kavlak","doi":"10.21653/TFRD.280075","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21653/TFRD.280075","url":null,"abstract":"Purpose:The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between hallux valgus and foot function and balance in older men.Methods:One hundred and six feet of 53 elderly men (mean age: 73.79±7.08 years) were evaluated in this research. Hallux valgus angle was measured using a goniometer. Foot function, dynamic balance and static balance were evaluated by the forefoot subscale of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Scale, Timed Up & Go Test and single leg stance, respectively, and their relations with hallux valgus were analysed.Results:Hallux valgus angle values were 17.32±11.29 degree for right foot and 16.45±10.65° for left foot. No significant relationship was found between hallux valgus angle (right and left) and static and dynamic balance (p>0.05). However, hallux valgus angles of right and left foot were correlated with the scale scores of American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society scale (r=-0. 34, p=0.01; r=-0. 38,p=0.005, respectively).Discussion:According to these results, the severity of hallux valgus itself does not influence balance, although it partially affects the functional ability of the forefoot in older men.ÖzAmaç:Bu çalışmanın amacı, yaşlı erkeklerde görülen halluks valgus ile ayak fonksiyonu ve denge arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırmaktır.Yöntemler:Bu araştırmada, yaş ortalaması73.79±7.08 olan 53 yaşlının 106 ayağı değerlendirildi. Halluks valgus açısı gonyometre ile ölçüldü. Ayak fonksiyonu, Amerikan Ortopedik Ayak ve Ayak Bileği Derneği skalasının ön ayak ölçeği ile, dinamik denge “Timed Up & Go” (kalk ve yürü testi) testi ile, statik denge tek ayak üzerinde durma süresi ile değerlendirildi ve halluks valgus ile ilişkileri araştırıldı.Sonuçlar:Halluks valgus açısı sağ ayak için ortalama 17.32±11.29° ve sol ayak için ortalama 16.45±10.65° olarak ölçüldü. Sağ ve sol ayak halluks valgus açısı ile dinamik ve statik denge arasında anlamlı ilişki bulunmadı.
