The algorithm was applied to RGB images of four healthy subjects; including pre-processing, filtering, region of interest selection, segmentation and pixel computing stages. A Repeatability and Reproducibility method (R&R) based on average and range technique is used to validate the procedure. For this test, two physicians acquired the US elastography images from the same subjects in the same anatomic region, at the same time. An elastometry graph is obtained after interpolation of the three color maps is applied. According R&R guidelines, the results for repeatability and reproducibility for each plane (red, green and blue) were less to 10%. These results are indicative of an algorithm with good performance. This proposal represents a promising diagnostic tool to evaluate objectively the elasticity of biological tissue for diagnostic, treatment follow-up and research purposes.","PeriodicalId":269877,"journal":{"name":"2015 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127928557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This methodology consists of calibration, maintenance, and set-up with recalibration. Also, the correct selection of the equipment to be calibrated, maintenance frequencies, maximum allowed error and actions to be taken, makes crucial to have accurate methodologies for decision making, due to the high economic and social costs that a failure represents. The metrological confirmation model proposed in this paper is presented through following sections: (i) the characteristics of the equipment to be evaluated are defined, (ii) parameters for selecting the equipment to be calibrated, calibration frequencies and actions to be taken are established; and (iii) the cost of the metrological control is evaluated and the most convenient modality for the institution is defined. As a result, a model that allows designing and controlling the metrology process is proposed; also, this model permits simulating the creation of a laboratory, and taking decisions to make changes from processed real data.","PeriodicalId":269877,"journal":{"name":"2015 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123081665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically this method was used as a criterion to determine most advantageous number of clusters for the HMMGMM model calculation. For this purpose, the LS and HS characteristics were evaluated in terms of MFCC (Melfrequency cepstral coefficients) and Quantile vectors. The analysis for the number of clusters was based on utilization of dendrograms, silhouettes, and the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC). The merged HMM-GMM models for LS signals with Quartiles offered excellent results, while for HS signals, the best results were obtained with MFCC vectors. In both groups of LS and HS signals, a high degree classification efficiency was obtained reaching 100% for studied sets of signals. In particular, the results demonstrate that utilizing BIC or dendrograms as a part of optimized criterion enhances efficiency of merged HMM-GMM models in diagnostic classification of cardiopulmonary acoustic signals.","PeriodicalId":269877,"journal":{"name":"2015 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"238 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115180042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The withdrawal reflex appears when a painful stimulus activates the nociceptors, the generated potential travels to the spinal cord and then the withdrawal of member exposed to painful stimulus is happened. The method used in this study to pre-process these reflexes is called a Coherent Self-Averaging method which attenuates the fluctuations of the random values of high frequency. The smoothing produced by the method is controlled by setting of two parameters: m and k. To demonstrate the performance in the detection of the reflex, 90 reflex signals of 15 healthy subjects were used. Its detection performance was compared with the one of the method called Teager-Kaiser energy operator. The reflex detection performance of algorithms was analyzed using the receiver operating characteristic curve. This showed that the Coherent Self-Averaging method, had a higher sensitivity and specificity than the Teager-Kaiser energy operator. Smoothing of signal, artifact attenuation (by electric stimulation) and reflex enhancement also was observed.","PeriodicalId":269877,"journal":{"name":"2015 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124298449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Medical technology, being costly and complex, requires detailed processes with rigorous methodologies that guarantee an accurate assessment and transparent acquisition process. The most important aspects to consider, although not the only one is the economic assessment, which has always had a great weight in the assessment processes, even when not many variables are considered and financial projections over time are not always carried out. This paper aims to incorporate variables as the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), the technology life cycle, and the Net Present Value, in the process of economic evaluation. Additionally, the paper presents one of the most representative results obtained in the acquisition processes carried out during the last five years in different health care institutions in Colombia, the assessment of a PET-CT using the proposed methodology.","PeriodicalId":269877,"journal":{"name":"2015 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124453047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thermic therapies are one of the most promising techniques these days. Microwave ablation transmits electromagnetic energy inducing a focalized temperature increment to achieve tumor necrosis in a minimally invasive way. One of the main limitations in the development of thermotherapy percutaneous applicators is the measurement of certain parameters in biological tissue. The proposed solution is the fabrication of a phantom that emulates the dielectric properties (permittivity and conductivity) of breast tumor tissue in order to make coupling measurements of the applicator in an experimental setting. A methodology for the fabrication and measurement of a breast tumor phantom was developed, achieving, with low error, the imitation of dielectric properties of the breast tumor tissue reported in the literature. The use of low-cost materials and the simplicity of the methodology allow reproducibility of the phantom for experimentation in the fields of diagnostic and treatment of breast cancer through RF in the microwave range.","PeriodicalId":269877,"journal":{"name":"2015 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132882336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
