MAM is constructed primarily for automatic Chinese accent detection. We aim to study the idiosyncrasies of the Chinese accents of people from different regions of the world. The text in the corpus is designed to be easily readable for international Chinese-speaking students studying in Taiwan, while maintaining sufficient linguistic complexity. The speech data in MAM is collected from overseas students currently enrolled in the National Sun Yat-sen University. There are 30 speakers with 40 utterances each, so a total number of 1,200 utterances are collected. The recruited speakers are geographically divided into three groups: 10 speakers (6 male and 4 female) are from Indonesia, 10 speakers (5 and 5) are from Malaysia, and 10 speakers (5 and 5) are from Hong Kong or Macau. In addition, we have selected 10 speakers (5 and 5) from Taiwan in the TCC-300 corpus. The utterances in MAM are manually analyzed for actual pronunciation, and a rudimentary accent classifier based on the pronunciation variation patterns across different geographic areas is constructed.","PeriodicalId":269402,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Speech Database and Assessments (Oriental COCOSDA)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123243265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the last half of the 1990s, the former National Language Research Institute (NLRI) played a central role in the development of Japanese language resources by constructing corpora like Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ) and Taiyo Corpus. In 2006, the language resource group of NLRI started a Japanese corpus compilation initiative named KOTONOHA, and set about the construction of a 100 million words Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese (BCCWJ). The activity of NLRI was inherited by the NINJAL Center for Corpus Development reestablished in 2009. Now that the construction of the BCCWJ was completed successfully in August 2011, the NINJAL center set about two new projects of exploratory nature: a historical corpus project and a 10-billion-word ultra-large-scale Web-based corpus project. In addition to the presentation of the NLRI-NINJAL activities, language resource development in Japanese institutions other than NINJAL will be introduced briefly in the beginning. Also, application of the CSJ to the study of phonetics will also be demonstrated at the end.","PeriodicalId":269402,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Speech Database and Assessments (Oriental COCOSDA)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116697827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm uses Modulated Complex Lapped Transform (MCLT) to estimate the power spectrum of input signal. The noise is estimated continuously from the spectrum using time-frequency dependent smoothing factor and tracking spectral minima. The gain function is then estimated using the smoothed a priori SNR value for the current frame instead of the previous frame using two-stage wiener filters. This method is simple to implement and greatly suppresses the residual musical noise as well as delay, providing consistent speech quality improvement across all SNRs and on average, nearly 0.13 Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) improvements.","PeriodicalId":269402,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Speech Database and Assessments (Oriental COCOSDA)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121863864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study is based on the analysis of 44 utterances each of the declarative type and the interrogative type spoken by native speakers of Standard Colloquial Bangla (SCB). The results of F0 contour analysis show that declarative utterances have a gradually falling F0 contour with a terminal fall whereas interrogative utterances have a rising contour and a terminal rise. It is also observed that interrogative utterances have a positive swing of F0 larger than that of declarative utterances, and the maximum of F0 occurs within the prosodic word containing the interrogative information. It is shown that these differences can be represented in terms of differences in parameters of the F0 contour command-response model. The validity of the analysis was confirmed by perceptual experiments using synthetic stimuli, demonstrating the feasibility of the command-response model in speech synthesis of Bangla.","PeriodicalId":269402,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Speech Database and Assessments (Oriental COCOSDA)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127075949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Younger group belongs to 20 to 40 years of age whereas older group is distributed into 60 to 80 years. We have created phone and triphone labeled speech corpora. Initially, speech samples are aligned with statistical modeling technique. Statistically labeled files are then pruned by manual correction. Hidden Markov Model Toolkit (HTK) has been used for aligning the speech data. We have observed phoneme recognition and continuous word recognition performance to check speech corpus quality.","PeriodicalId":269402,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Speech Database and Assessments (Oriental COCOSDA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130950319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pitch in tone languages is multi-functional, so intonation theories based on non-tonal languages may be not quite suitable for tone languages. In this paper, a transcription approach for Chinese intonation is put forward, which is mainly based on the Autosegmental-Metrical (AM) theory. Therefore the approach can be called C-AM approach. It is supposed that Chinese intonation is composed of pitch accents and boundary tones, which are marked by the combination of tonal register and tonal range. A finite-state grammar of Chinese intonation is proposed.","PeriodicalId":269402,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Speech Database and Assessments (Oriental COCOSDA)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127856143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Present work uses a new set of signal units in sub-phonemic level, namely, Partnemes and allows a flexible approach to the length of transitions. Partnemes include identifiable portions unique for phonemes, their transitions and co-articulations. The creation process includes a series of normalization (Pitch, Amplitude and DC) with judicial selection and augmentation of speech segments such that smaller fundamental yet appropriate parts of the phonemes, interphoneme and inter-word transitions can be used as acoustic units. Encouraging results of the listening test confirm good perceptual quality and acceptability of the developed signal dictionaries. ESNOLA framework with optimal size partneme inventories altogether give a simple approach for generation of high quality synthesized speech with easy portability to hand-held devices.","PeriodicalId":269402,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Speech Database and Assessments (Oriental COCOSDA)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124922327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is not easy to collect sufficient code-switched utterances for model training for code-switching ASR. This study presents the procedure and experience for the design and development of a Chinese-English COde-switching Speech database (CECOS). Two different methods for collecting Chinese-English code-switched utterances are employed in this work. The applications of the collected database are also introduced. The CECOS database not only contains the speech data with code-switch properties but also accents due to non-native speakers. This database can be applied to several applications, such as code-switching speech recognition, language identification, named entity detection, etc.","PeriodicalId":269402,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Speech Database and Assessments (Oriental COCOSDA)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123408465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the consortium is to build up an open resource English speech corpus representing the varieties of English spoken in Asia. It was agreed in 2008 that each participating member will use the same recording platform to collect a common set of core data so that a set of core properties common to all varieties of Asian English, as well as to features that are particular to individual varieties can be developed. Areas of overlap between L1 and L2 English and differences among varieties of Asian English could be determined. Initial efforts in 2009 were devoted to designing spoken-language tasks that aims to elicit the phonetic aspect of a large range of English segmental and suprasegmental characteristics. The 2011 efforts, reported here by the Taiwan members, were devoted to designing spoken language tasks that aims to elicit (1) a comprehensive coverage of phonotactic variations, (2) broad vs. narrow focus and (3) dialogue and discourse materials using discourse completion tasks (DCT). We believe the data collected can be used to develop ASR tools, investigate various issues of speech prosody, and assess English proficiency towards CALL applications.","PeriodicalId":269402,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Speech Database and Assessments (Oriental COCOSDA)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128312901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
