Many of such features affect the network in different ways, thus yielding trade-offs. They can affect the reliability and availability of the network when they put devices or links into sleep mode, and they can affect the lifetime of the devices as a result of the new pattern of operation. This work discusses what needs to be evaluated when considering equipment lifetime, with respect to processor of network devices. We show that the new network management profile does affect the equipment lifetime negatively, in contradiction to what recent works seem to predict. We also present our ongoing research on how to calculate the trade-offs considering performance, availability, energy efficiency, and lifetime. These aspects must be taken into account in cost functions used to define the best network configuration. The key of our analysis and method relies on the understanding of thermal cycling and the power of using it in a predictive fashion.","PeriodicalId":268334,"journal":{"name":"10th International Conference on Network and Service Management (CNSM) and Workshop","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128275450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This enables multiple virtual networks to run on the same physical infrastructure, based on the deployment of rules for routing the packets together with the OpenFlow controllers and datapaths. However, FlowVisor has limitations in its architecture related to the absence of a specific model for managing the silces as well as a more friendly user interface. Thus, taking into account the limitations mentioned, this paper presents a tool to complement the FlowVisor called GiroFlow. This tool presents a model for management of the silces focusing on the properties of the application running on the controller. And it also uses automated interfaces with FlowVisor and network controllers to create and adjust the silces and policies inside a network managed by FlowVisor.","PeriodicalId":268334,"journal":{"name":"10th International Conference on Network and Service Management (CNSM) and Workshop","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121421859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because resources on mobile devices are shared out, it is essential to arrange highly-limited resources effectively and reasonably while considering utilities of multi-users and the network. To achieve this goal, abstract Buyer Agent and Seller Agent as well as the concept of resource market are introduced in the Resource Pricing Model. Then a novel Generalized Lagrange based Resource Negotiation Mechanism is proposed including the solution to the problem model using Generalized Lagrange Multiplier technique and the process of multi-round resource negotiation. At last, the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed mechanism is capable of optimizing the response time, maximizing the system utility and balancing the agent utility under the constraints of budget, deadline and energy resource.","PeriodicalId":268334,"journal":{"name":"10th International Conference on Network and Service Management (CNSM) and Workshop","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116105745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 2012, several large telecommunication operators issued a call to action for Network Function Virtualization (NFV)1. The underlying idea is that every network service currently delivered on proprietary, application specific hardware should be deliverable using virtual machines. This means that routers, firewalls, load balancers and other network devices run virtualized on commodity hardware. Consequently, ETSI is extending this idea to mobile networks. Here, parts of the core and the radio access network will be virtualized. The immediate advantage is that any Virtual Network Function (VNF) can now be deployed, re-deployed and undeployed in the same way as any traditional virtual machine. Thus, NFV will result in more dynamic and agile networks than seen heretofore. However, this will raise a number of serious issues in managing these future networks. In this paper, we examine issues and challenges in orchestrating these virtualized functions and their interconnections to provide a more agile mobile telecommunication network.","PeriodicalId":268334,"journal":{"name":"10th International Conference on Network and Service Management (CNSM) and Workshop","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132479116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This feature leverages SDN flexibility in two aspects: (i) it provides a new management method, in which topological infrastructure requirements are satisfied by the most appropriate forwarding mechanism, residing in each managed network element; (ii) further decoupling between control and data planes in SDN by offering tableless forwarding support. As proof of concept, an implementation with different forwarding methods is carried out in Open vSwitch. Results show that FlexForward is able to achieve seamless switchover between forwarding methods. It also allows efficient tableless forwarding implementations, improving by up to 31% in latency, and 90% in throughput, when compared to regular OpenFlow.","PeriodicalId":268334,"journal":{"name":"10th International Conference on Network and Service Management (CNSM) and Workshop","volume":"185 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134257635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The key idea is decoupling the control plane, which makes the forward decisions, from the data plane, which effectively makes the forward. However, the OpenFlow, the main SDN enabler, is designed mainly by wired networks characteristics. As consequence, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) is not suitable for operating as control plane and many wireless networks features are neglected in the OpenFlow, e.g.: power control and network ID. In addition, there are few effort research to extend SDN to wireless networks and these existing works focus on very specific issues of this integration. In this paper, we propose an architecture to extent the OpenFlow functionalities in order to proper deal with wireless networks, including an approach for transporting the control plane over wireless multihop networks. The extensions include new rules, actions, and commands, which bring the network management flexibility to the wireless context. We validated our proposal by implementing and testing some extensions in a small real world testbed. As a proof of concept, we illustrate the OpenFlow capability of isolation between research and production traffics in a wireless backhaul.","PeriodicalId":268334,"journal":{"name":"10th International Conference on Network and Service Management (CNSM) and Workshop","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134262895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For large-scale clouds, traditional resource allocation systems, which rely on a centralized management paradigm, become ineffective and inefficient. Therefore, there is an essential need of providing new management solutions that scale well with the size of large cloud systems. In this paper a distributed and hierarchical component placement algorithm is presented, evaluated and compared to a centralized algorithm. Each application is represented as a collection of interacting services, and multiple service types with differing placement characteristics are considered. Our evaluations show that the proposed algorithm is at least 84.65 times faster and offers better scalability compared with a central approach, while the percentage of servers used and fully placed applications remains close to that of the centralized algorithm.","PeriodicalId":268334,"journal":{"name":"10th International Conference on Network and Service Management (CNSM) and Workshop","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131426029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, many patches are released by vendors on a preset schedule. This implies that managing patches in a correct and timely manner has become an important factor in smoothly running an IT environment. However, when a patch is applied, the affected software is often required to stop temporarily, which can cause a disruption of service. The down time is commonly called a maintenance window. Although sophisticated live patching techniques have been previously proposed, their applicability in practice is very limited. In this paper, we propose a novel patch management technique based on commonly available virtualization capabilities. It allows system administrators to perform a majority of the patch work outside of the maintenance window, such as downloading patches, installing them, and performing post-installation testing and fixes. By capturing the disk activities and replaying them during the actual maintenance window, we can transform a complex software patching operation to a series of more deterministic file I/O operations, and thus, reducing maintenance window from hours to minutes.","PeriodicalId":268334,"journal":{"name":"10th International Conference on Network and Service Management (CNSM) and Workshop","volume":"306 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116228440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, Software Defined Networking (SDN) has emerged as a novel networking paradigm that allows optimizing the traffic in a variety of ways, ranging from the Ethernet layer to the network layer and above. This makes SDN a versatile approach for a large number of applications. However, little is known about the power consumption of SDN-enabled networking devices, especially OpenFlow switches. This paper presents measurements and derived power consumption models for two SDN devices, namely an OpenFlow-based hardware switch (NEC PF 5240) and the Open vSwitch running on server grade hardware. The effect of configuration, management, and the managed traffic on the resulting power consumption is evaluated. Based on these measurements, a power model is derived, allowing for an estimation of the power consumption based on the configuration and network traffic only. Being available on the OpenFlow controller, the information about the power model enables an estimation of the power consumption of the full network without additional measurement equipment. The resulting model shows an error of less than 8% for the software switch and less than 1% for the hardware switch.","PeriodicalId":268334,"journal":{"name":"10th International Conference on Network and Service Management (CNSM) and Workshop","volume":"88 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126304608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Google relies on its massive Content Delivery Network (CDN) to push YouTube videos as close as possible to the end-users to improve their Quality of Experience (QoE), using dynamic server selection strategies. Such traffic delivery policies can have a relevant impact on the traffic routed through the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) providing the access, but most importantly, they can have negative effects on the end-user QoE. In this paper we shed light on the problem of diagnosing QoE-based performance degradation events in YouTube's traffic. Through the analysis of one month of YouTube flow traces collected at the network of a large European ISP, we particularly identify and drill down a Google's CDN server selection policy negatively impacting the watching experience of YouTube users during several days at peak-load times. The analysis combines both the user-side perspective and the CDN perspective of the end-to-end YouTube delivery service to diagnose the problem. The main contributions of the paper are threefold: firstly, we provide a large-scale characterization of the YouTube service in terms of traffic characteristics and provisioning behavior of the Google CDN servers. Secondly, we introduce simple yet effective QoE-based KPIs to monitor YouTube videos from the end-user perspective. Finally and most important, we analyze and provide evidence of the occurrence of QoE-based YouTube anomalies induced by CDN server selection policies, which are somehow normally hidden from the common knowledge of the end-user. This is a main issue for ISPs, who see their reputation degrade when such events occur, even if Google is the culprit.","PeriodicalId":268334,"journal":{"name":"10th International Conference on Network and Service Management (CNSM) and Workshop","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127590868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
