Schroeter, Stephen Viller","doi":"10.1145/2908805","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1145/2908805","url":null,"abstract":"Welcome to the southern hemisphere, welcome to Australia, welcome to Brisbane, welcome to the picturesque Gardens Point campus of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), and welcome to the 11th ACM SIGCHI Designing Interactive Systems (DIS'16) conference! \u0000Since 1995, the (so far1) biennial Conference on Designing Interactive Systems (DIS) is the premier, international arena where designers, artists, psychologists, user experience researchers, systems engineers, and many more, come together to debate and shape the future of interactive systems design and practice. DIS is owned by the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer- Human Interaction (SIGCHI). In the past, DIS has been held in Ann Arbor (1995), Amsterdam (1997), New York (2000), London (2002), Boston (2004), State College (2006), Cape Town (2008), Aarhus (2010), Newcastle (2012), and Vancouver (2014). \u0000The DIS'16 conference schedule comprises two days of pre-conference workshops and a doctoral consortium as well as three main conference days packed with peer reviewed paper presentations, demos, panel discussions, and three invited keynote speakers. The social program includes the welcome reception on Sunday night, the DIS Experience Night on Monday night, the DIS conference dinner on Tuesday night, and a post-conference after party on Wednesday night. \u0000And for all those who still haven't had enough, the QUT School of Design has added a great satellite event held in conjunction with DIS'16: the inaugural Queensland Design Policy Summit, a full day event on Thursday 9 June, dedicated to bringing together thought leaders and policy makers across design, business, science, education, and citymaking in a dialogue to canvass the merits of resurrecting a revised, fresh, and bold Queensland Design Policy. \u0000The DIS'16 theme of \"fuse\" is about exploring the range of new possibilities along the human and technology spectrum -- the blurring of any clear divides between analog and digital, atoms and bits, materiality and virtuality, art and design, academy and industry. From mobiles to wearables, bearables, and even injectables, technology is finding its way to be carried by us, on by, and inside us. At the same time do we welcome more and more robots and humanoids into our lives -- from Furby, Roomba, Siri, to Jibo. Are we witnessing a fusion of the cyborg with the matrix? What does the future of interactive systems hold? We hope to advance these questions at DIS'16. \u0000I am very pleased that we were able to curate and assemble a stellar program, including three invited keynote presentations by Carlo Ratti (MIT), Natalie Jeremijenko (New York University), and Stelarc (Curtin University of Technology). In this paper, we reflect on a case of designing for indirect interaction -- where it is not the children's hands but a facilitator's on the device. The context is a computing lecture we gave for twenty-six children aged between five and seven years old. This was specifically designed to give a stylized experience of being a university student -- it is self-consciously a lecture emphasising student-teacher interaction around code. In this hands-on workshop sixteen participants iteratively design and prototype a rich interactive artifact for catching new experiences. By putting the prototypes in the context of use and equipping these with sensors, contextual, behavioral and experiential data of users interacting with the prototype are captured and displayed via a data-canvas. Building on earlier case studies, we investigate how reflections on this data will further inform the design process. In this workshop we merge advanced cardboard modeling tools and techniques with data-enabled design techniques to actively probe and understand changed experiences. ICT can play a significant role to empower and support them in their new lives. In this paper, we focus on understanding the challenges that refugees and asylum seekers face in order to build a comprehensive perspective to design suitable technologies. As a first step, we carried out a qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with 7 participants: 5 refugees and asylum seekers and 2 activists. Our preliminary findings show that there are three common themes that affect such demography: (1) Social isolation, (2) Cultural backdrops, and (3) The role of technology. However, for people with an intellectual disability there can be significant barriers in accessing the web. This research aims to design a novel solution to help people with a disability, especially people who cannot type easily or correctly, to access the web independently. We propose to utilize Near Field Communication tokens to store and materialize website addresses into tangible handles for web access. Most importantly, we use tokens to store frequently used key words and serve as visual aids to enable query through combination of different search tokens. This solution has the potential to improve the quality of life yet is still relatively simple and affordable. Our system aims to promote the user to maintain good posture by delivering a real-time feedback when the user poses forward head postures particularly sitting at the desk. We designed and developed a visual feedback system using a 3D camera and a simple pop-up notification window. People usually prefer to read comic books at their pace. When comic books are digital, their medium becomes dynamic and interactive, how can the readers' experience be redesigned? We present ComixTrip, a system with which people can read digital comic books with sequential media cues responsively adapted to their reading pace. Our system relies on low-cost eye tracking both for measuring how people read; and for sequencing speech balloons semi-automatically: once a balloon is read, the next one is displayed. We ran a study to analyse how people read text paragraphs with diverse spatial layouts by tracking their gaze. Our preliminary results show that we may accurately track when people have read balloons in comic books.
