It therefore has a non-replaceable role in fertilizers. However, some of the phosphate ends up in water bodies from field run off water in crop production. Industrial processing releases phosphate to the environment due to the high cost of its recovery. To close the nutrient loop, new and innovative ways for more efficient phosphorus cycling is therefore urgently necessary. Moreover, depletion of world phosphate deposits “Phosphorus peak” and soil contamination through cadmium and uranium contained in fertilizers produced from raw phosphate rock, eutrophication of water bodies, and P emission to the air during mining and ore processing, make the search for alternative solutions of P recycling attractive. The wellestablished removal techniques of P from waste streams are performed by physico-chemical or by biological treatment methods as well as their combinations [1], [2]. Although most of such methods are effective for large-scale industrial or domestic wastewater treatment plants (> 400 PE), implementation of these solutions to small-scale facilities or to remote applications may not be economically or logistically feasible. In this work, we present the development of a low-cost adsorptive media for phosphate removal. The work aims to find an effective solution for production of adsorbents having high capacity and selectivity towards phosphate ions, on the one hand, but possessing uniform properties and ease of manufacturing on the other. For this purpose, the series of adsorbent compositions employing industrial by-products were developed. Industrial solid wastes such as fly ash F, blast furnace slag, and paper mill sludge with high calcium content were chosen as raw materials to be a primary source of Ca, Al and Si. Geopolymerization technique with alkaline activator was used to obtain powdered and granulated forms of adsorbents[3]. Three types of geopolymer adsorbent named fly ash F (FAF-GP), blast furnace slag (BFS-GP) and fibre sludge (FSHCa-GP) were evaluated for the adsorption of phosphate in aqueous solution. XRD and XRF methods were employed to characterize physical structure and chemical composition of primary source materials and geopolymer products. To evaluate phosphate removal efficiency of geopolymers, batch and column adsorption experiments were performed. The effect of various operating conditions, i.e. initial pH, adsorbent dose, initial phosphate concentration, and adsorption time has been studied. The adsorption process was relatively fast for FAF-GP, equilibrium has been reached at 1.5h contact time, while for BFS-GP and FSHCa-GP the maximum removal rate was achieved at 5h and 24h, resp. The isotherms look differently for all three adsorbents that reflects the different adsorption mechanisms. Capacities at phosphate concentration of 100 mg L are 26 mg PO4 g for BFS-GP, 36 mg PO4 g","PeriodicalId":265434,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th World Congress on New Technologies","volume":"215 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132768517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nutrients can be reused and applied to land as valuable fertilizers. Composite adsorbents were prepared from industrial waste materials and calcined natural clay. The ability of the new adsorbents to simultaneously remove phosphate and ammonium from diluted solutions was evaluated. Paper mill sludge or blast furnace slag together with kaolinite clay were used as raw materials to produce inorganic polymers by alkaline activation. All raw materials and composites have been characterized by XRF and XRD. The influence of clay and waste material in the adsorbent composition, the adsorbent dose, and time of adsorption characteristics have been investigated at static conditions by bench-top tests. For the best identified composition (metakaolin and blast furnace slag composite), the phosphate adsorption increases from 0.05 mg-P/g for pure clay up to 8.5 mg-P/g for composite with blast furnace slag content of 60 wt.%, while a decrease on the ammonium sorption capacity from 15 mg-N/g to 7 mg-N/g is observed. Phosphate removal was enhanced when ammonium was present, while ammonium removal was slightly varied whether phosphate ions in the system or not. In case of ammonium, ion exchange is the likely mechanism of removal, whereas in the case of phosphate surface precipitation in form of hydroxyapatite appears to occur.","PeriodicalId":265434,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th World Congress on New Technologies","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129248914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Then in order to reduce their amounts and volumes uncontrolled burning of wastes occurs. As known, low-temperature burning of waste generates emissions of unintentionally produced dioxins and furans. At the selected pilot dumpsite of Ararat (Republic of Armenia) renovation works were performed, then followed infrastructure development, as well as implementation of best available technique and best environmental practice. The paper deals with data obtained through 2 monitoring campaigns, including analyses of samples of air and soil taken at the dumpsite area before and after renovation works. For PCDDs/PCDFs determination passive sampling was arranged and done using passive samplers installed at the selected site of Ararat urban dumpsite before and after renovation works. Collection of samples was done for the evaluation of the environmental situation (2 monitoring campaigns). The samples were analysed for PCDD/PCDFs at the laboratory of RECETOX (Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic) as an external laboratory. The entire procedure was executed in accordance to SOP provided by the RECETOX. Considering findings of the First and Second Monitoring Campaigns, we identified some sampling points that can be compared. Thus, air samples 10001, 10002 and 10003 can be compared with 20001, 20002 and 20003 accordingly. The following observations were done. For air samples decrease of PCDDs/PCDFs concentration made from 28 to 65 times. For soil samples PCDDs/PCDFs concentration decreased 304-393 times.","PeriodicalId":265434,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th World Congress on New Technologies","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123495299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
